the three incoming freshman in 2009 . . . a class that failed to make ESPN's top 25 list and arguably the weakest (on paper) SU class in the last several years

The highest rated of the three was Dash, the only one of the three to make the final RSCI consensus top 100 for that year. Triche was ranked outside the top 100 but inside the top 200 in most lists; Dirty was not ranked at all.

Four years later, their respective positions in the hierarchy are reversed.

You are generally right, but each is a special case.

James is the extreme example of a raw athlete, showing limited skills and trying to figure it out, who developed over 4 years in college. Could shoot from distance, but did not have a floor game. The closest examples I can think of are Damone Brown and Dmetrius Nichols (forwards who got better year to year), but both were way ahead of James as frosh.
Brandon was a highly regarded prospect as a soph at JD, but fell in the charts when he blew out his knee as a junior. JB always said that BT was better than his rankings and backed that up when BT started right away. Maybe the opposite of James, in that James was raw potential, while BT was a skilled product and dominant as a HS soph.
Dash Riley -- was highly rated (top 50?) when he was a Georgetown commit as a junior. Had the size, but also very raw. Over the course of his senior year, he didn't live up to the hype, didn't get better, and his ratings fell.

James was like a 2nd yr juco player IIRC. Dash was rated purely on size/potential.

he was originally recruited with Mookie & Kris, but he was young for his class and took an additional year at prep school

I'm sure future players like BJ Johnson are liking what they are seeing from James.
