Breaking Syracuse News

They spelled her name wrong. It's "Mysti."

I'm thinking this is move to the ACC is a much bigger deal than any of us realized . . .

Can someone post the article or a summary? The firewalls at my work will not allow access to that site.

Syracuse Leaves Big East For Woman Named 'Misti'

SYRACUSE, NY—In a hastily delivered statement from the passenger side of the young woman’s lime-green Hyundai Tiburon, Syracuse University announced Sunday it was leaving the Big East, the conference it helped create more than 30 years ago, for a 23-year-old exotic dancer and vodka brand ambassador named “Misti.” “We’ve had a nice run with the Big East, but we think Misti has more to offer us,” said Syracuse athletic director Daryl Gross, crediting the woman for bringing a “renewed sense of purpose” to the 141-year-old research institution. “We have had some good times—great times, actually, really great—with the Big East, and we hope we can continue to maintain a friendly relationship, but we think it’s time for us to pursue other options.” Gross quickly added that the young woman is “really smart” and wants to go to school to become a dental hygienist, which is perfect, because they are a school.

It's funny cause it's true.

I hope her tips are good to afford SU.

Not all that funny...

Not sure if anyone saw this either - from DJ Gallo on ESPN Page 2 (not saying this is much funnier though):

Mascot Fact of the Week

With Syracuse moving to the ACC, perhaps the Orange's new conference mates would like to learn about Otto the Orange, also commonly referred to as: "What is that stupid thing? Their mascot? Seriously?" and "The lamest mascot in all the land."

The school's first mascot was a goat. Vita the Goat. Then it went with The Saltine Warrior -- an Indian chief -- until 1978, when the school decided that a stereotype as a mascot might not be the way to go. Then came a gladiator covered in orange armor who was "soon both laughed and booed off the field," according to the school's website.
What followed was a series of proposals, ideas and temporary replacements for a new mascot, including:

  • Egnaro the Troll
  • a Superman-like figure
  • a man in an orange tuxedo
  • Dome Ranger, a sort of arena cowboy
  • Dome Eddie, a large bug
  • Beast from the East, a green monster
Eventually Syracuse went with an orange with legs: Otto. But first it was known as Clyde the Orange, then Woody the Orange before the name Otto stuck.
ACC, I share all of this with you because as dumb as Otto the Orange might seem, you can see that it's actually one of the better ideas that Syracuse conceived.

Funny stuff . . . especially since Otto has been featured in ESPN commercials over the years. And if you are going to make fun of the "Man in a Orange Tuxedo", you might as well go after the guy in the red tuxedo at Louisville. Their basketball coach, I think?

Am I the only one that finds the onion to be horrible and really unfunny.

I don't think it is funny itself, but the people who link to it as if it is factual information make me laugh. Obviously this thread is not one of those times.

I get a kick out of the comments on ESPN after those articles - there are a bunch of people that just dont get it and go nuts about how wrong he is

Humor, like what one considers erotic, is in the mind of the beholder. I personally think "Jackass" is inane, but I really like the 3 Stooges. Go figure.
I'm reminded of the senate hearing on internet pornography, where some elderly senator questioned why men would even want to view lesbian sexual scenes.

Tough crowd.

Is thing thing on?

I thought it was pretty good. Especially the last line. But I also think people go out of their way to call things that many find funny as unfunny. As if somehow it makes them feel like they are unique or not conforming. Who knows. Maybe that doesn't apply to anyone here, but it certainly happens.

I enjoy The Onion immensely. You have to be able to think on a different level to appreciate it.

I must confess I like the onion, including the SU news...sometimes silly makes more sense than reality. In this case, I think the reactions we've gotten from around the country for the ACC move are similar to what we'd have had if Misti was the real reason. That's the part that's nuts...

A sense of humor is a vital trait. I often think that there are people here who think that Syracuse should never be the focus of humor. I wonder if Pitt is substituted would it become funny? Perhaps not... but that brings us back to a lack of humor again. Self deprecating humor is sometimes the funniest and I believe Professor Marx (my icon) would agree!
