To start the second half. Makes no sense to just pass the ball in as a continuation of the alternating possession. New half, new jump ball. Start the alternating possession all over again. Just my 2 cents.

Dunno, after tonight I think the officials already have too much to handle calling the game. Why ask them to toss the ball up too?

John Wooden pressed for the eliminaiton of the JB. He complained "You never knwo what's going to happen". Only a coach would think that was bad.

I don't want one after ever basket as in the old days, just after ever tie-up between the players who tied it up.

I'd also limit tie-ups to situation where the players legitmately share possession. Simply touching the ball while another player is holding it shouldn't be a tie-up.

That would be fine. I just don't see the game reverting that far back. I'd be happy if they just tossed it up to start the second half.

Yeah, not gunna happen. the problem is that in an effort to protect the players, refs blow the whistle quickly - if we did what you recommend with the way the game is called today you'd end up with a 3 hour game with a jump ball every couple minutes...or one that had 16 technical fouls for hitting guys with your elbow trying to prevent a tie-up. Not saying its a terrible idea, just that there's a huge ripple effect on how games would need to be called that needs to be taken into account.

Personally I don't mind the alternating possession, I think older fans fondly remember the jump ball as a much better idea than it actually was. A jump to start the second half makes sense...not really down with any more than that.

The more blown wistles, the longer the game. My way there would be fewer jump balls- but they would be genuine jump balls.

I disagree. If they blow fewer whistles for jump balls, it means that the play will go longer and guys will be getting hit with elbows. So the game will be longer anyway, because we'll have 16 technical fouls for guys getting hit by elbows if they call that play the way it is currently called. So the game will be longer, and the refs will have significantly greater influence on the outcome. They would need to do away with the T for the elbows or significantly change the way it is called for your idea to be practical. Since its a player safety issue, there is absolutely no chance that will happen...and therefore doing away with the alternate possession would be a disaster.

I never understood the hate for the arrow. I mean how is giving the ball to the team with the tallest player involved in the tie-up any less arbitrary?

Ridiculous. The jump ball at the start of the game is a joke, and you want more of them? Refs have no idea how to toss the ball straight up, and they have no interest in conducting it according to the rules in place. I've lost count as to how many jump-balls we lost so far this year because the toss was directly over the opponent or the tip "stolen" before the ball reached it's peak.

It's is viewed as a formality and just a way to get the game started.

I think there should be a jump ball in the last 5 minutes.

Like the XFL did...looseball and both teams come running from their benches for it. ;)

Seriously, it's just a pet-peeve of mine that the refs do not administrate this play correctly nor seem to care. To me it seems that it is viewed as a formality to start the game and not officiated according to the rule book.

Perhaps the "modern" players are so much bigger, and can jump so much higher, quicker, that they need to have each of the "jumpers" back just a little bit more -- a couple of feet each. Give the ref more room to make the toss.

I agree with starting each half with a jump ball. I miss the jump ball during the games too. I don't like that a team can get bailed out by a held-ball situation in a frantic moment if the possession arrow favors them.
