Buddy Boeheim receives invite to NBA G-League Elite camp

Buddy worked darn hard on his game. The shooting stroke is both quick and accurate.
But at the next level, he's not going to be allowed to trudge into the lane, back down his man and shoot the 14 ft. jumper. His lack of foot speed will make him a liability on defense. He got everything he could out of what he was "given" in ability.

Agreed.
Good college defenders were able to, if not shut him down, then severely restrict his offensive game. In the Association he’d be rendered null and void.
But I’ll never count the kid out. Go get ‘em, Buddy!

Yes but the NBA is also a lot about spacing the floor and shooting the three. If he can do that then he might get a sniff. It's definitely an uphill climb.

If he gets a chance he won't be asked to get his own shot. He'll be a spot up shooter with other guys creating/facilitating. If he can defend, what I think is the bigger question mark as you also suggested, he could latch on somewhere as a shooter off the bench.

He's got his shot. That's all anyone can ask, right?

Payton Pritchard is currently the seventh or eighth man in the Celtics roster.

He is an absolute defensive liability, but he can shoot, so he gets circumstantial playing time.

I think Buddy can find the same role at the bottom of a rotation. At least Buddy is big enough where he won't get posted up by point guards. :)

Buddy is a 36% career 3-point shooter. That doesn't even qualify as anything more than average in the NBA. The adjective I would use to describe him is streaky, not excellent, or even good.

I think he could get easier shots in rhythm in the NBA and he won't be shooting on dead legs. I agree that he was streaky at SU though.

Good point. Trying to be Michael Jordan on our team probably brought down his percentage. But, to be a deadeye 3-point specialist in the NBA; you've got to be consistently draining threes.

No way. You clearly don’t watch the celts if you think they play a similar game.

And constantly moving, resetting after the ball goes inside.

This is silly.

They don't profile similarly as players at all except being defensive liabilities and good shooters. End of comparison.

Buddy is much bigger, so might be able to play a bit more than Pritchard... But he hasn't anything like Pritchard's handle, so maybe not.

Being on a team where he'll be the wide open guy getting threes in rhythm will make Buddy's game totally different. He won't have to dribble much in the NBA. And he won't be the focus of the defense. And he'll have a few players who can pass around him. It wouldn't shock me if he was a very efficient shooter in those circumstances.

Hey can’t we just be happy for him? I remember seeing many of these same negative projections out of prep school. What’s the stat - 1% make the NBA? The kid works so hard - nice he can enjoy some of the fruits from his work ethic to maximize his talent. It’s awesome that he’s getting his chance. Whether he does get to the NBA, G League, overseas - whatever, I’ll be cheering for him and all our former SU players to succeed.

With Marcus Smart out last game, Pritchard played 24 minutes because of his ability to back up the point. Clearly not Buddy’s game.

I just can’t think of an equivalent player in todays nba that buddy plays like, or could. He’s not a three and D guy. He doesn’t have the handle, motor or athleticism of Tyler Herro or Duncan Robinson.

You’re right. I’ll lay off.

The first guy I think of is Georges Niang who shoots about 70% of his shots from the three. But Niang is taller and plays a different position where he might be able to get by with limited athleticsm.

...and Heat dont even play Robinson much now unless he's on a heater. Strus got all his mins because he can't be picked apart as bad on D. These elite players just know what they are doing now. Paul picked apart Luca last night. I can't imagine what he's do to someone the level of Buddy.

That said...I hope like hell he gets a shot because it would be cool to see.

But he doesn't have to do it for 40 minutes. If he were able to catch on with someone, it would be a fraction of that. He's a long shot for sure.

Do people realize how difficult it is to defend on the perimeter in the NBA right now?

Watch 5 minutes of Grizz-Warriors and watch what the guards have to be able to do defensively.

The old NBA when the game was played in the paint - I think Buddy would’ve made it back then.

I think everyone in this thread/forum is aware that Buddy’s chances of sticking on a team in the league is a long shot. That doesn’t mean we can’t root for him to do so. I hope the best for him. He was pretty amazing in last years sweet 16 run.
