- cannot win consistently playing 5 starters and only 2.5 back-up players on the bench, especially when this has been the teams' strategy for the past 46 years

- cannot win consistently playing a simple isolation offense while the other four players watch one player drive to the basket and don't crash the boards

- cannot win when the coach refuses to change his in-game strategy to anything but a 2-3 zone defense

- cannot win consistently when the coach rarely presses when behind

- cannot win consistently when BB is your "star" player, rarely comes out of the game, and yet has the lowest FG and 3pt shooting percentage of the four shooting starters; Yet has the most attempted shots on the team

- cannot win consistently when you have not developed a viable back-up center

- cannot win consistently when the opposing defensive player can shut down your most prolific shooter and the coach does not adjust his in-game strategy

- cannot win when consistently repeating a strategy when it is not working and blaming your players without looking at your coaching strategy. - Looking for different results is not a strategy it’s simply Hope.

Here's hoping for a change in coaching strategy - Or Simply a Change in Coaching.

Bottom line: Need better players

None of this is true because JB has been doing these exact things for 46 years.

Yep, better coaches will evaluate and recruit better which will get better players w development and in game adjustments. Simple formula
I’m not sure “better coaches” is the answer.

A younger coach, with a more predictable future might recruit better players.

yes and no, its not younger with more predictable future.

Its younger and willing to adapt as opposed to 77 and unwilling to adapt and learn new tricks

Such as what exactly?

What new tricks?

Or maybe the head coach should listen to his assistants More than once a year like every other good coach in America

Which reinforces that JB has surrounded himself with a group of yes men.

Which in turn suggests that it wouldn't be a good thing for one of them to be at the helm, with JB casting a large shadow over the program when he leaves.

Here is what I think has happened.

I think JB likes to have a system. A system that allows him to still coach at this level when he no longer has the same energy and appetite for traveling. He became an overlord of this system. He has the assistants do the recruits and he does the "closing". He has the assistants run the practices and he watches the practice from his office via the multiple big TV screens. There was an interview he conducted a few years ago in his office in the Melo Center where he showed the various screens he has to watch as the practices are being conducted. The assistants are his extensions, he gives the order the assistants executes.

This results in several levels of disconnects.

First, he is no longer tight with any recruits. The recruits connect to the assistant coaches who recruit them, that talks to then on the phone, that visit them during games, that texts and facetime them twice a day.

Second, he is no longer tight with any players, not the way he was with DC, Devo, Gmac etc...you can tell from their stories on the Devo podcasts they were up close and personal with JB, and JB ran their practices, yelled at them during practices, Scoop talked about JB hugging him in the shower after not playing him in Philly at a Nova game. I don't think he has that kind of relationships with current players (except Jimmy and Buddy) anymore.

Being disconnected from his players makes it easier for him to criticize them during his pressers or yell at them during timeouts. He doesn't yell at Buddy or Jimmy, is that favoritism? I don't think so, I think he doesn't yell at them because he knows them so well, he knows that they knew what they did wrong or they did the best they could and he doesn't need to spell it out for them, instead he channels his energy towards motivating or lighting fires under someone else's ass to get more out of the other guys he doesn't know well, it's not a good look and it screams bias but he is too old to worry about perception and the media/internet people who don't matter to him.

He kept simplifying and simplifying the system to allow himself to coach at a high level, and the system just doesn't work today. He built himself an Ivy League team as a result.

One new trick might be to NOT run the same out of bounds play at the end of the game vs. WF especially after the first attempt didn’t work. JB calls it again to get the ball into BBs hands and he fumbles it out of bounds on the WF baseline. Ultimately they score and game ends up in the loss column.

It was interesting to watch Miami’s Larranaga talk on the sidelines for a while with his top assistant during a timeout, clearly discussing what adjustments and tweaks they could make. Larranaga didn’t pretend to have all the answers or at least wanted to engage with his top assistant about what he was thinking. Then in the second half they came out pressing, making a clear and obvious adjustment. You never see that from JB. He is such a know-it-all.

But Buddy is doubled! He’s getting great opportunities for everyone else!

THIS

None of this is true because JB has been doing these exact things for 46 years.
The problem is that the game has evolved and JB has stayed stagnant. We have seen a gradual regression over the last ten years or so of the things that worked for JB for the first 36 years becoming gradually less and less effective. Now we are at the point where those things are actually ineffective.

You can run the same out of bounds play every time so long as you execute.

The players didn’t execute.

More talented players execute more often - more consistently.

We need players.

If great players won’t come to SU because the HC is 78, that’s a problem.
