I created buckets of final rankings (using SRS) 1-10, 11-20, 21-30, etc

The most common bucket for him is the 0-10 bucket. He's done it 13 times in 43 seasons.

When he's not top 10, he's just as likely to be in the 31-40 or 41-50 range as he is to being 11-20

We look a lot like we did in 2001-2008 with the big anomaly in 2003 of course

He hasn't had season worse than 50 since 1982, that was the only one.

Average SRS is 24

last 5 years average is 39

After Melo, the next 5 year average was 32.

5 year average before melo was 34

6 years in between average of 11

Boeheim has a high floor but we go stretches where they aren't very good or great. I really hope he gets one more little run.

I'm all over the place but one thing that's interesting is that he was better overall 1979 and 1980 than he was in 2003. 1996 was just as good as 2003

Top 10 30% of the time
top 20 49%
top 30 63%
top 40 81%
top 50 98%
top 60 100%

What’s SRS?

Excellent analysis. Very informative! Thank you.
I think it really says something that we have been that good that often.
He's been a great coach for us, a true legend.
I, too, hope he gets one more good run with a chance to win it all.

It really is a damn shame the sanctions hit right as we joined the ACC and during Boeheim's twilight. Hopefully the next 3 years he gets some elite players to commit and we can contend for a NC 1 or 2 more times.

Does this analysis end before the tournament or after? The last few years the tournament would have bumped our end of the year ranking a bit, although I imagine some years it would have hurt too.

It applies to entire seasons.

although i give JB props for cutting back on the marathon minutes the final ACC tally shows :
tyus battle 3rd (36.3) . oshae brissett 17th (32,8). elijah hughes19th (32.4).
in a 15 team league that's still 3 in the top twenty. MIA and UVA had 3 in the top 25. no other team more than 2. much much better than in the past but still atop the league in MPG numbers.

And?

I don't know the answer to this question, I'm just throwing it out there... but is SRS less valuable in basketball than football? I feel like there's so much randomness with the margin of victory at the end of basketball games with fouling and free throws and garbage baskets that it could skew the information.

Agreed -- we were rolling between 2010 and 2013 / 2014 timeframe.

Why does Vegas determine Point Spreads using similar metrics then?
