11-time national champ OCC men's lax coach stepping down

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - 11-time national champion Onondaga Community College men’s lacrosse coach Chuck Wilbur is stepping down to take on a new role at the college.

After 17 years at the helm of the Lazers’ program, Wilbur has accepted a position as the school’s retention specialist.

OCC says Wilbur will focus on “student athletes and native American students to help them enroll and succeed at OCC.”

OCC is launching a national search to find a replacement to Wilbur.

Wilbur leaves the Lazers’ program with a 266-15 record.

He was named the NJCAA Lacrosse Coaches Association National Coach of the Year in 2006, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2017 and 2018.

Wilbur’s players’ accomplishments include:
- 25 players who have become professional lacrosse players
- 61 have transferred to Division I colleges
- 96 have transferred to Division II colleges
- 101 have transferred to Division III colleges; and those that have transferred have won a combined 34 NCAA National Championships

Wow, i wonder if they fall off like Herkimer did?

Wonder if they stay in house or go local and grab someone like archer at JD, or like they say a nation wide search.
You have to imagine they're gonna grab someone who has a very very good travk record and proven success.

Well...what about Wilbur to SU...it's long past time...just sayin'
Yup. In this new role he's in that assists players on getting the academics to go to Division 1 universities, he will get Austin to cuse, then from there he becomes the coach after Desko wins one this year and retires.

This is good news. In my honest opinion, CNY is in DESPERATE need for better coaches at the youth and high school level if we’re ever going to become a “hot bed”/ cranking out top tier talent like we were many moons ago. Hopefully this is start in the right direction.

awesome news. there are tons of very good ex-players coaching youth and up players in cny. can't vouch for player - to - coach transfer of talent, as i'm not around, but it's a big head start on all but a few locales.
'cuse area can always rally. my sense is dropoff has lots of factors, but what i know is if a talented coach gets really engaged, talent comes and can be developed with the history of the area.
wilbur certainly knows how to coach.

This is great news for CNS lacrosse as he should be able to get them turned around fairly quick. Doesn't hurt that CNS is one of the largest HS in area.

My '31 played against an Orange Crush '30 team this summer. He has pretty good stick skills for his age and is a decent athlete, but really doesnt know how to "play" lacrosse.

Anyway, these Crush '30 kids understood positioning, movement, and already largely had the basic fundamentals (watching them do pre-game drills where they catch everything, throw to the correct ear, put correct weight on passes, etc.) better than my older kid's team ('27/'28). I mentioned that to a parent near me and he remarked that most of these kids' parents probably played college lacrosse, if not D-1 lacrosse. I suppose that trumps my college baseball career. :)

In lacrosse, like every other sport, having not only the genetics to be successful, but being ingrained in the lacrosse culture, is big. I can't imagine there are too many other places where the culture is stronger than in CNY.

That is disturbing. I was a ’99. I feel really old right now.

You should have your own '31. ;)

He's a third grader. That's about as young as it gets in the club world right now and honestly, it's a little absurd. But there is too much money to be made by clubs/coaches, and too many parents ready to fork it over (i put myself in the "keeping up with the Jones'" category). Candidly, he has some maturity issues, and I doubt he will play club this year. It's a hefty investment at this point for a kid who barely wants to be there. That's fine though and he will do rec lacrosse and his other sports (tennis, basketball, taekwondo) as he expresses interest and in due time.

The earliest I could have is a ’40. That is even more disconcerting.

And I hear you on the club thing. I quit coaching club for many of those reasons. I just didn’t enjoy it. The spirit around it has shifted so much.
