SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The city of Syracuse will host a celebration to kick off the Syracuse University football team’s new season.

Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh and Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon are inviting the community to come out at noon on Aug. 23 to honor the team at the “Our city, our county, our house, Syracuse football celebration.”

Head Coach Dino Babers and members of the football team will be in attendance.

The celebration will be held at Syracuse City Hall, which is located 233 E. Washington St.

Members of the marching band, cheerleading squad and spirit squad will also join the celebration. The event will feature a joint city-county proclamation and flag raising.

In the event of inclement weather, the celebration will be held inside the City Hall Commons Atrium at 201 E. Washington St.

Leaves don't fall until October. Maybe we can use some of that $25M donation to give everyone a John Deere tractor so they don't have an excuse to rake.

What’s with the fixation on leaves ?
Old joke, from several board iterations ago that has developed a life of its own.

When bemoaning the lack of attendance at football games, the argument was made there were so many other things to do in CNY in the fall, including raking the leaves. It has since become a (half)joking phrase for poor attendance.

Obviously, its use will drop off as we move forward. :)

Has this ever been done for Basketball?

My memory seems to think we’ve done something like this before. Maybe before a bowl game? Maybe it was after the 03 b-ball championship?

We've had pep rallys at Manley before Final Four trips, and there was a parade down Salina St after 2003.
