Hey folks with the blessing of DCCuse himself, I wanted to provide a note that one of our own regulars here is in the medical fight of his life dealing with a very serious and rare heart issue. His closest SU friends are already aware of what is going on, but thought perhaps some of his other SU board friends would like to wish him well (figured that is what we can use this thread for).

He (Rick) has been transported on an advanced medical jet from Syracuse to NYC for the most advanced care possible as they try to simultaneously figure out what has happened, as well as how to successfully treat it. Major surgery is planned this week.

If I’m not mistaken he can still read the board and the thought is let’s rally as a Cuse community in sending good well wishes. I wanted to also announce that to address the mounting medical bills this fall we will be holding several Fine Mess Tailgate related benefits with details to be provided later. We’ll also likely get a gofundme me page set up.

Rick my Syracuse Orange colored friend, as you already know we love you, we’re thinking about you and are sending well wishes your way to fight this thing as best you can, keep your spirits high, and get done what needs to be done to get on the other side of this. Hang in there bro!

(Mods plz pin).
Get well soon Rick!!!

DCCuse update with the blessings right from Rick and his great wife Jenn who said to fill in those here who have been nice and gracious enough to send such great and appreciated well wishes.

Big day tommorow in that tommorow the heart doctors and specialists at Columbia Presbyterian hospital in NYC (some of the best heart surgeons in the world) will be doing Ricks somewhat delayed heart surgery. The delay was to allow some healing with other but related side issues which have cleaned up nicely to allow the implantation of a pump like device called an LVAD device to assist and counteract his heart failure issues.

As for causation and finality (in terms of future Rx) the former they at this point really do not know the hows and whys of how this occurred as to if a post virus issue of some type (never had Covid before or now) or some other causation like routine heart disease. The dr. in me believes if it was the latter here that would be easy to figure. It may always remain a mystery.

BUT the good news is one can live a long long normal life with such a device like this much in the way people do with pacemakers and the like. They don't know if they'll ultimately recommend a heart transplant down the road or stick with this, regardless, the track record of the LVAD is quite good.

So lets hope and pray and have big Rick in our hearts minds and thoughts tomorrow as this proceeds. You go Rick, you got this and we'll look forward to hearing the good news that it went well real soon. Love ya bro!

Thank you for the detailed update, Mike. He’s in the best place that he could possibly be for this type of procedure. He’ll continue to be in my prayers and am looking forward to seeing him at the Fine Mess soon.

So he’s in recovery. Drs said the actual procedure went very well, now post op is the challenge to recover with hopes his vital organs all heal up well and nicely.

So the trendline and trending in the right direction overall but has a ways to go to get over the hump.
Thanks, Doc. Rick is lucky to have you in his corner, and we are all lucky for knowing Rick. Really pulling for the guy and for a full recovery. Thanks for the update. Been wondering all day.

Thanks for the updates, Mike...anyone think to give the surgeons some marbles, a la Mister Roberts?
