As I live in Baltimore, put on sports radio on the way home from work and the University of Maryland show (Terptalk) was on.

The hosts felt that syracuse gave up and quit and states that at least 1 Maryland player (CB Marcus Lewis) stated this. The TV announcers said the same thing during the 2nd half.
They brought Devito throwing the 4th down balls out of bounds and not giving the guys a chance, as well as the quick TD drives on D when they just ran the ball as support to their thoughts. I don't think the tommy throws were giving up, just a lapse in judgement and trying to protect the ball, though the D at the end was concerning.

I know Dino denied this and said it was just execution, but is this a concern?

Yes. I do believe they quit a bit. However, I feel like it isn’t going to happen again. The biggest concern I have is that the WRs quit on the play and do not move to find the QB. I mean without a Dungey like game breaker it’ll be extremely hard to beat Clemson but I’d like to see fight throughout the whole game regardless of the score.

Also if Dino were to call his players out in week 2 to the media meh wouldn’t be the best strategy. I’m sure it was addressed in house.

its probably naturally hard to get as excited and amped up to play when you're getting blown out. is that quitting or just a natural regression? think about golf. you are having a bad day and mentally not in a great place. its almost impossible to overcome that, even if you seemingly are giving it your all.

so, my response is no, i don't buy it. i think that infers that our team is soft and quitters, which i don't believe is true.

You can look at this many different ways. A friend of mine at the game felt they had quit and couldn't see a lot of "leadership things" going on on the sideline with the players, especially in the 2nd half. As jgeorge322 said, it is natural to see that. In my mind, it's the rest of the season (duh, I guess) that will show whether this was just this game or an actual concern. Not everybody is a Dungey and has that competitive streak, can't expect a whole team to act like that, as much as people think players should. If we see the players fighting hard in every game the rest of the way, it won't really matter what the specifics are for the Maryland game, as far as whether they quit or not.

Look, I love Syracuse University Football and I stay for every game until the very end and I watch every game on television that I can't attend right until the final play. I watched that Maryland game and there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that they quit. If you go back to last Saturday's posts, I said it then. Dvoracek who was with ESPN doing the broadcast said the same thing. "Syracuse just quit, they gave up." I said it last week that more than getting their doors blown off, the worst thing about that game was they quit. You are correct, that is a major concern with this team going forward.

Looks like they quit to me. Last year Dungey's toughness seemed to rub off on the entire offense and the D had a few hitters that inspired the rest. When the QB fears no one (sometimes foolishly) it seems to inspire the rest of the team. Not expecting TD to throw caution to the wind but somebody on the team or coaching staff needs to get tough if they expect to finish like they did last year.

Anyone who’s played competitive sports knows when the other team has quit.

If Maryland players are saying we quit, (and it looks like we quit), then I do believe they quit.

Not the greatest look for this team obviously, but I don’t think it’s as big of a deal as some do. Clemson is a heck of a team to have to rebound against, but it will tell us a lot about this squad.. that’s for sure.

Mr V Dino obviously saw the tape, do you think as was stated above that he just didn't want to call people out publicly, but handled it in house? He clearly said in his presser that IHO they didnt. I trust your eye so I was just wondering if thats what you thought

I think it was handled in house as it absolutely should be. I do realize he as a college coach should never call his team out in public. I am sure there were some very loud one way coaches to players "kumbaya" meetings this week and the fact that the effort in many instances more towards the end of the game was lacking probably had Coach Babers blood pressure at unsafe levels. I give he and his staff a lot of credit for how they handle things in public. That can never happen again and I think with this coach and this team, it won't. You are going to learn a lot about character with this team in the next few games. I still have faith, you know belief without evidence. Go Orange!!!!!!

One of the best and worst things that ever happened to Clemson came in one game - the 2012 Orange Bowl. You know the one I'm talking about. 70-33 West Virginia. Gamecock fans who have nothing else going for them still like to talk about that one. Nevermind that Auburn beat them 56-17 in the SEC championship that same season - but I digress.

In that game, we were leading in the 2nd quarter and had 1st and goal on their 2 or 3 yard line. Can't remember which back it was but we sent him up the middle where he may or may not have broken the plane (refs reviewed it and said no. I thought he did), he fumbled and a WVU defender ran it all way back for the TD and the lead. We completely lost our focus from that moment on - especially on defense. We made no real effort to stop them after that and the scoreboard showed it. That was one god awful night.

A few days later, Dabo took control of the situation by changing DC's. Enter Brent Venables - and the rest is history.

I guess I would go back and do it again to get Brent but, ugh, that one was hard to stomach.

Your guys will get over this one too.

marcus lewis wants to feel like a tough guy as if he had anything to do with why the game went so poorly

maryland scored immediately, i don't think it was the cumulative effect of them being oh so tough

The team looked listless and lost. Devito in particular kept having Dino put his arm around him on the sidelines. I'm really hoping they got punched in the mouth and simply reacted poorly - as kids often do when the chips are down.

If Dino is as good a motivator as we all think he is - last week, and likely this week... will be great opps to build the TEAM for the future.

I mean down 40 in the 4th - yeah. This kind of exposes a fallacy in sports - that you “go all out every play no matter the score!” This can’t possibly be true. It’s a team sport made of human beings. Some will bring less effort.

Complaining about garbage time is lame.

They did quit. You could see in their body language that they had given up. Even the ESPN commentary said it looks like they're lying down out there. Losing is one thing, quitting is another and those are guys you do not want to play with.
