After reading HCSS comments about Donnie, it was probably a bigger blow than most realize losing him last year, looks like Shafer expects him back and in a big way this year. I really took notice of how strong he was in those workout videos released last year. Here's to hoping Donnie stays healthy and becomes that edge rushing threat.

Where did you read HCSS' comments? I can't find them in OE's daily post.

Being able to pressure the opposing QB with your front 4 provides a HUGE advantage to the defense. I would argue that Freeney (and Clifton Smith) were the main force behind the success of our 2001 team.

As an aside, our W in the Insight.com bowl provided an injury that is legendary in my family. When Johnny Morant hauled in the 52 yd TD pass, I celebrated by jumping out of my chair with my fists in the air, smashing my right hand into the living room ceiling. It hurt like hell, but my wife laughed so hard she just about peed her pants.

High praise indeed, I would be satisfied if he gets 75% of Freeney's production.
Maybe HCSS was referring to Donnie's physical stature and strength rather than skill set. They're both physical freaks.

Hope he's that good. We need an impact guy on the DL to replace Bromley. Would help even more if it was an edge guy like Simmons.

An edge guy like Simmons emerging may let them move Thompson or Johnson inside for a few snaps every game.

75% of Freeney's production is 13 sacks and 6 forced fumbles. Would you just be "satisfied" with that? I'd be freaking thrilled. Freeney was ridiculous.

Ehhh, I guess I could live with that. Seriously, after reading Shafer's comments comparing him to Freeney, I cannot wait to see this kid play! Anyone know how many years he has left?

2 years of eligibility left.

I'm going to guess either Thompson, Robinson or Johnson gets moved inside full time. We don't have enough bodies there especially if Zeek Rodney doesn't sign with us or has to prep. Plus we currently have a plethora of starting caliber talent at DE. Isaiah, Welsh, Robinson, Thompson, Simmons and Trejo.

I wouldn't mind seeing Simmons and Johnson as starters with Robinson and Welsh backing them up. Would allow them to move Thompson inside. Something has to give, I think Thompson would be prime candidate to move inside.

If we don't have Wayne Williams on the team, I'm not optimistic about our DL next season.

Correct me if I'm wrong but he also has a case for a medical hardship waiver, which would give him 3 years of eligibility remaining.

Only if he redshirted in 2011 due to an injury suffered in HS or over the summer. If he redshirted in 2011 due to a coaches decision (which I believe he did), his waiver won't be approved.

Aaron Weaver ran into the same problem in 2010. He redshirted as a true frosh at Hofstra in 2006, played 2007-09, transferred to SU and played only 2 games in 2010 before the knee injury. Because his DNP in 2006 was not injury related, he was not eligible to apply for a waiver.

I thought weaver could have really helped that year.

I was told their would be no math...but yes I guess after your number crunching I think satisfied might have been an understatement. I forgot about how many sacks and forced fumbles he had, seems like a long time ago.
