Okay so I figured I would give a recap of the events leading up to and during the Duke game for the students. As you’ve probably already heard, many students camped out for this game. The first students started Sunday night 13 days before the game. Personally, I started Wednesday night the week of the game. There were 4 people in my group, including myself. Only one person from each group needs to be with the tent at a time. I was in the tent Wednesday night and then a few hours on Friday afternoon. All of us students were thankful for the food that was given to us.
Saturday morning started with a 4:45 wakeup call. Between 5 and 6 we packed up, and everyone was back in line by 6:45. Doors opened around 7:15 for College GameDay. This was my first College GameDay experience, and I loved it. Digger was the first analyst out, and he really got the crowd going. Even before GameDay started he told us that we would beat Duke, California would upset Arizona, and Syracuse would be the new #1.
After GameDay, the students were moved from midcourt to the student section. Myself along with the rest of the Otto’s Army Executive Board had a pep rally planned. I was able to get John Wallace and Roosevelt Bouie to come and speak to the student section to kick off our pep rally. They were great, and they spoke about what having a loud student section meant to them. During our pep rally, we went over all of the chants and cheers, as well as a few new ones. The car alarm is my favorite, and we threw in a vertical wave too. We’re using the car alarm on opponent's second free throw. It’s a combination of certain hand movements and noises. I think it looks great, and it’s something different that no other school does.
The game was amazing. I’ve been to hundreds of Syracuse basketball games. This game is probably top 3 along with Syracuse-Pitt 2003, and a few others that come to mind as well. The atmosphere was amazing, the crowd was one of the loudest I’ve ever experienced, and of course, Syracuse won. After the game, I don’t think anyone wanted to leave. I just stood there trying to take in everything and capture the moment. It was one of the best feelings ever.
Here are some pictures and videos from the day:
