ESPN Debate...Syracuse or Baylor

Because they do these debates all the time ... smh

Eye test ... Eye Test - Tool

I don't need to watch this to know that Snottlieb argues in favor of the B12 team

What DG is doing is much better than patting our backs. He keeps the players fired up, JB, Hop et al, and just look what he does to us.

Keep it coming Dougie I love being fired up:D

I really have no problem with DG picking Baylor. Hey look, we're obviously an elite team this year and DG has stated that many many times. Baylor, however, is also elite and I don't think it's absolutely unreasonable to think they could beat us. They've won @ BYU, @ Northwestern, @ KSU, and they beat St. Marys, WVU and Miss St on a neutral court. 6 really solid wins away from home (to go along with a home win against San Diego St). Maybe we'll play them in the tourney and settle it then...but I don't know if DG should get blasted for picking them.

Go to guys: We have two guys averaging 20 points per 40 minutes. They have none.

Syracuse would run Baylor off the court. Just like we have done this season, and will continue to do.

Gottleib's entire argument was "go-to guy" and then he was unable to say which Baylor player he'd choose as a go-to guy between Perry Jones and Pierre Jackson.

Baylor is a great team. They have 3 or 4 great players.

However this is really not a debate, as we have 7 or 8 great players...and our 9th and 10th guys will be great with a little more experience.

I agree with OE, keep the doubters coming and let the team use it help keep focus. Although, I have to say, I'm sure JB is in their ear about staying focused ... at least that is what I am led to believe based on what the players have been saying.

And I think Baylor would be a tough team to play. I've been pretty impressed with them.

They have to talk about something and I have no problem if Doug thinks Baylor is better than SU . . . . . . the sad thing is that they must barely watch us play if they cannot figure out that Dion Waiters is our go to guy and has really emerged in that role during BE play.

There was a segment in Saturday's game where Dion made so many things happen all at once. From hitting an NBA step back, to being disruptive on the defensive end which included a couple of steals and an assist. He was like a one-man-wrecking ball all within the span of 4 minutes he helped increase the lead from 5 to 20. Incredible energy and quickness. He's starting to remind me of a mini-Jordan.

With the score SU 21 Providence 16

4:11 Dion drives into a seam by the free throw line, pull up jumper in the lane for 2

3:15 Dion makes a 3 pt basket

After the make he is all over the place full out hustle on press

3:01 his hustle caused TO

2:41 step back 2 nearly a 3

2:30 steal, missed drive to basket, batted ball missed, followup

2:13 steal missed tough layup

1:59 foul

32-17

1:26 def rebound

1:20 good pass to Baye, he didn't have hands ready, turnover

2 seconds left, Dion penetrates kick-out-assist to Scoop for 3

41-21 at the half

You must know that all the above doesn't qualify Dion for anything except being able to do this in the friendly confines of the carrier dome. Just listen to the main argument of the video segment.
Doug says Syracuse has not been tested on the road yet because we have no quality road wins.
To DG, until we play a quality opponent on the road, (win and we're #1)(lose and we validate his argument), he will question the validity of our unblemished record.
And when we beat Notre Dame and Cincinnati next week those two opponents won't qualify as we were able to beat them too.
So until we are able to "beat ourselves" on the road, Doug Gottlieb will continue this argument. It what he is paid to do.

I for one think we were tested in the first half of those two games in MSG and in the second half of our home game against Marquette.
I don't think anyone can question our ability to score from anywhere on the court as we have already proved that we can go on some pretty impressive scoring runs. You have to watch the games though and I'm not certain Doug have the time to get them all in.

Says the guy who had trouble naming a 2nd player on Ohio State.

Ohio State looked good yesterday didn't they?

That is a good Indiana team.
Too bad we had to lose last year. I would have liked to see that match up.
Ohio State wanted nothing to do with us last year.

This is my problem with what he is saying. If he wants to question the consistency of our shooting, or consistency of our offense in general...go ahead. But, if he is watched any of our last 5-10 games and doesn't realize that Dion is a go to guy than he wasn't really watching.

Have you actually seen Baylor? They are very good and may well be the best team in the country.

It is possible that throwing Baylor into the discussion we finally get rid of NC and KY and OSU as being the team. Some very interesting statististics that I feel do support either 'Cuse as #1 or Baylor #1(from ESPN Insider)

1. 'Cuse #1 RPI to Baylor #3
2. 'Cuse SOS #1 To Baylor #37
3. Top 50 wins: Baylor 7; 'Cuse 4
4. 'Cuse 5-0 Road and Neutral to Baylor 6-0
5. Bilas index which includes Kenpom and Sagarin statistics has 'Cuse #1 and Baylor #3
--'Cuse has 5 wins against Sagarin top 50
--Baylor has 6 wins against Sagarin top 50
What is really interesting is that neither Dougy or Katz spoke to the defensive strength of 'Cuse...
6. 'Cuse #1 in steals
7. 'Cuse # in blocked shot %
8. 'Cuse near top in TO # vs. Baylor turns over much higher
Most of us feel 'Cuse is better but the on court match-up will tell us...unfortunately college teams in all sports except baseball play 1 and done...so 'Cuse and Baylor would have to bring it for all or nothing...winner deemed the best...in such a case...'Cuse wins

The annoying part is not that some analysts think a team may be better than Cuse. Somebody may very well be better. The annoying part is that you would never hear this debate if another team was currently number one. When the Cuse loses hold of number one, these debates will stop. For some reason there is a disrespect for Syracuse. And I think it comes from all the alums working at ESPN and in the sports televsion industry. The non Cuse people end up hating Cuse becuase they hear about them all the time.

I don't think I agree with this. I'm pretty sure people on ESPN debate this stuff all the time. That's like, the entire reason ESPN exists. Most people just don't care about it when we aren't involved in the debate.

As to the debate itself, both SU and Baylor are great teams. The go to guy thing is pretty stupid, as people have pointed out all you'd need to do is watch our games to see Dion is the guy.

I agree. Baylor is a great team. This would be a great matchup. We would not run them off the floor I can tell you that. This team is loaded with athletes and would give us fits. I think we would also cause some problems for them as well. When you have a player of the year candidate (Perry Jones 3) you will give any team fits.
