I was extremely critical of Red last year. I was of the opinion that the offense is easier to fix than the defense, and had absolutely no faith that Red could ever fix the D. I've been thrilled with how so thoroughly wrong I was about that. The team has issues, but for the first time in years, I feel like anything can happen. Very disappointed with the 0-3 Vegas trip, but lot of the right pieces are there. Anthony will adjust to the college game and hopefully Red is learning from film and getting feedback from his assistants on where his decision making faltered in-game. Yesterday was demoralizing, but that was an odd set of circumstances and WT games happen.

A lot to learn and improve from. Happy Thanksgiving all-- I'm still very hopeful for this season.

A positive take! I’m also feeling a little better today about the mess, not much but a little. Watching a Gonzaga team that people were saying was going to win a Natty get rolled by 40 just gives me a little pause to say some days a team just doesn’t have it.

They’ll have to be pretty damn perfect from here on out. Possible but unlikely.

The opporuntity to make the tournament has taken a substantial hit. It does not matter that they have the ability to make it, they wont have the resume. We only have 1 more OOC opportunity for a Q1 win and were not beating Tennesse. We have almost no margin of error in coference, we have to beat everyone were supposed to AND steal a couple like Lousiville, Duke, UNC on the road. Our metrics place us at 72nd which is about 25-30 spots off the bubble. This team wont make the tournament and Red will be fired

That would be great.

And I think we saw enough against Houston and in the first half against both Kansas and Iowa State to see that we have the horses to compete with just about anybody. The offensive execution on the other hand...

But back to the OP's point. This team, if they don't pack it in, certainly could stabalize things and have a decent conference performance. I just don't know if that will be enough to get into the NCAA tournament [looking increasingly unlikely] or save Autry's job.

Really needed a win in this tournament against a quality P5 team to enhance our resume. Didn't get it.

I see a group of winners that are also high-character guys, and that applies to Red as well. It's easy to get hung up on the highest highs and the lowest lows, but think we end up being competitive (at the very least) against TN. This group wasn't ready to put it all together in Vegas against elite competition, but I think they will sooner than later.

Cuse gets into the tournament easily and ends up being one of those squads nobody wants to play. Heard it here first!

Unfortunately because of how badly Red screwed up last year, the things he needs to do to save this season he can't do. He needed to be able to play the youngsters early and get them ready for the ACC schedule. Instead he's stuck playing JJ, rather then getting Anthony, and Fennell ready for the rest of the year.

After how close we were to beating Houston, we shouldn't have the attitude that we can't beat anyone on our schedule.

Your point, I looked up the minutes and net points the team has since JJ return. It’s alarming.
-13.9 net points Syracuse has to its opposition. The offense was flowing better while JJ was gone . Not sure what you do. But seemed to be better to start Anthony and bring JJ back sparingly.

Thanks so much for your input. We all look forward to your next thoughts with bated breath. You should really be a grief counselor with the gift given to you.

Also in fairness the offense was flowing better because our best player was on the court. With Donnie out those comparisons are apples to bowling balls my friend

Wasn't JJ the only Orangeman with a plus minus against Houston? And it was like plus 14. Let's ignore that Anthony can't guard a chair and has been less than Steller from both the line and the 3
I couldn't agree more. JJ is hustling and helping on defense and playing within the offensive flow. Kiyan can be a real black hole on offense and a matador on the other end.

In my opinion, there are a lot of takeaways from the tourney, obviously the free throws and 3 pt shooting.

Free throws are a tricky, normally I would say leave them alone, full stop. However, with this group you have to do something, and I think we had enough missed free throws that it can and needs to be a "team" effort, I think a big part of it is in their head.

I'm a big fan of take the open shot, take the good shot BUT, you have to read the game as well, so there are times when although it may be the right shot, the game may require you to do something different.

Overall, things I would keep building on..

1) The defense - By the 3rd game, the type of defense we play, legs were gone. As the legs went so did decision and effort. This was a murderer's row by any stretch over three days. Keep working.

2) The event itself - Having the opportunity to play in this type of event is a blessing for the young group. Regardless of the strengths, everyone saw the parts of their game that need work. I can tell you something over and over, but if I get the chance to show you, teaching should become easier.

3) The teams stayed together, no throwing anyone under the bus, so now they been through something major, as a team

4) Coaches, focus on what you need to focus on, and ignore the noise. Just as the kids are taking a look at what they can do better and improve on, coaches need to keep doing the same thing.

Gotta state facts though. Donnie was also out. Offense was bad already but this also destroyed what little they did have.

People wanna complain about JJ. Donnie is quickly approaching full bust status. I’m sorry but potential is nothing in college hoops.

He needed to be playing this week if he could walk. I don’t care if he might aggravate something and miss December. Who cares. You beat Houston or Kansas with him we don’t need him for the next 5 cupcakes.

That's simply not how you take care of your guys, and I wouldn't want anybody as HC that would ever have this attitude.

I love SU sports. I want us to do well, but I just don’t see it. We have lost to each tourney team we have played so far and barely beat Monmouth. This is gonna be a .500 season at best. UNC, Duke, Louisville will likely wipe the floor with us. I guess we are used to UNC and Duke doing so

fundamentally, I agree. But it brings up some important points:

1 - you can't play "level 5 defense" 3 days in a row - but where is the self-awareness from the coach on that FACT? yeah you can say...3 games in 3 days is going to make it hard to play intense d every minute of every game, and its true...but thats not really an excuse for not adjusting to reality.

for me, this is a common pattern with Red's methods...he just puts his head down and does what hes going to do regardless of situation or advantage. no winning coach has this in common with red.

his situational awareness is abysmal...which is kinda a big deal for a coach.

2. you knew going in to the festival it would be 3 games in 3 days. it wasnt a surprise. its just not enough to make the entire identity of the team "level 5 defense" and max effort all the time as the entire strategy.

the other teams use X's and O's to beat opponents not simply "extreme intensity"...so thats why Iowa State was fine in the 2nd half, even though they were missing their leading scorer. they have an identity on BOTH SIDES of the ball...one that they can sustain and thrive in no matter the circumstances.

i do genuinely beleive that if SU was given proper prep time for kansas and iowa state those games go much better for the orange...but the consequences are still all that matters.

3. its been the same all 3 of reds years - he takes until well into the season to figure out he wants to play and establish schemes etc. Ok, he got the defense going...Ok. great. but the offense is the same offense that got JB canned. this iso spread NBA style stand around jack threes and try to score 1 on 1 with a center (even though I like Kyle) who is very limited in what he can and cannot do aka he can dunk or pass basically...with no post presence basically. Red gets the offense figured out after the season is over, basically. and this is year 3. why do the other programs seem to have everything installed and ready to go from game 1? in this era of non con being so important...HOW IN THE WORLD CAN A COACH BE OKAY WITH NOT BEING ABLE TO HAVE HIS SCHEMES INSTALLED AND IRONED OUT FROM GAME 1? red doesnt actually have an offensive system!!

4. yeah...you wonder why the entire roster is shooting well below their career averages, even at the line...welll...maaaaybe givng level 5 defense effort all game...has a negative impact on the offense. in fact, im sure it does. and it definitely did on the 2nd half of the Iowa state game. besides the fact that the system itself is way too basic and easy to defend, with a major lack of actual plays.

5. red should know that his style and system...what of it there is...cannot possibly work out well in a 3 games and 3 days situation. even if you gave red the option of picking his roster from all of ncaabb, his team would suffer in game 3. what does he do to adjust? NOTHING. bc he doesnt have anything else up his sleeve.

his onyl way of impacting games is by subbing players in and out and cheerleadng...what were his x's and o's adjustments???? he really doesnt do much there, esp on offense. he does bring out the press on d...but come on...there is a clear lack of "mastermindedness" going on.

of course he must play this "festival" bc it is all about NIL for his players and thats all THEY care about...but the format of this tourney SUCKS. coaches should be dissing the helll out of it and demanding massive changes.

listening to his post game after iowa state was cringe af...he literally has no shame or embarassment...he is happy with what happened" he is glad..."they can compete with anyone" bc they coudlnt in his first 2 years...despite getting BLASTED. and going 0-3...i wonder if this broke any of his players confidence like we saw with bell, taylor, carlos, etc in reds other seasons...probably it mightve. idk.

Syracuse basketball is a thing that just happens now. Unless and until our AD decides to replace the coach, and do so with the best possible candidate rather than the most convenient, I will never again get invested in this team in more than a casual way.

Does it just so happen our team “doesn’t have it” everytime we play a quad 1 team? Pretty convenient.

I love your optimism. I don’t know if I fully share it but I’m trying to stay positive. I wanna see how they perform for the rest of the non-conference and early conference play.
