Just heard him a few minutes ago on the Van Pelt show and said several complimentary things about SU and JB. A few things utterred were along the lines of...

  • JB is one of his best friends in coaching and how great a job he has done with the team this year, especially with the well known outside distractions.
  • SU clearly the best team in the BE and best in the country. It will take one very worthy team to deny SU a second NC.
  • Obvious by how the team plays (very unselfish) that it's a unified TEAM and JB completely immersing himself with the team...mitigating the outside distractions, etc.

thankfully he brought up the outside distractions numerous times

Fans are usually the ones who act like knuckleheads. JB is good friends with Calhoun & John Thompson Jr., regardless of how the fans like to see it. Most of the time dislike turns into respect, especially for a long-term antagonist.

Yep. Fans always seem to make more out of rivalries than what they actually are; it's what makes them fun. With that said, even if I saw JB golfing with Calhoun, I still dont think I would hesitate to tee one up in his direction. Of course, given the fact that Im a 12 handicap its JB I might actually hit by accident and not Calhoun.

It is very much in JC's benefit to build up SU. Then if they beat us its a huge win and makes them look great. Most coaches (the smart ones anyway) try to talk up their opponent before playing them.

I think calhoun called jb the best coach in the country after we won at uconn last year.

They both share the grumpy grouchy gene.

that is correct

JB is one of the most liked and most respected coaches in the profession - time and time again, you hear other coaches going above and beyond perfunctory media-speak in discussing him.

A rare exception is Jamie Dixon. Go back and listen to his post-game presser - his compliments are perfunctory and (IMO) insincere. I can't say whether he dislikes or lacks respect for JB, but compare his post-gamer to those by Jay Wright, Billy Donovan, etc. and there is a distinct coolness.

yeah well I'll take JB's style of grumpy grouchy any day over JC's bully theatrics.

I have never seen jamie Dixon give anyone credit. I can't stand the guy. I also agree he was insincere.

I agree 1000%. JB is a lovable curmudgeon. JC is an abusive maniac who beats his players, AS WE'VE SEEN THIS SEASON (D Daniels bitchslapGate). There are those sheep who believe the lies propogated by the sports media. To those who aren't so easily cowed, here is fact: THERE IS ZERO CHANCE THESE TWO MEN ARE FRIENDS!! Take that to the bank. I've probably already said too much already.

its a fact of this season. and he said it in a complimentary way.

i say this in the nicest way possible, and not necessarily directed at you...

get over it.

Calhoun's always been complimentary to JB, it doesn't add up to him being a nice person or running a clean program. He's probably the least liked coach in the business.

+1

Agree with both you and Moqui on this topic.

Dear Cuse fans, a few truths for you.

1. Calhoun and Boeheim are longtime friends, and always will be friends. They helped make the Big East what it was together and even Boeheim has no interest in leaving. He just has to.

2. Only one of them has had his team been banned from the NCAA tournament. And the other one likely won't happen, because the retroactive APR thing probably won't fly in the end, nor should it.

3. I realize you hate uconn. I would also hate a team that I perceived as equal or inferior yet had fairly equal historical conference and conference tournament achievements, but better tournament performances, and two more championships.

4. Your team is awesome and seriously going places. Stop the hate. You could win it all this year, and almost certainly will have a final four.

I cheer for Cuse because I cheer for Boeheim and all your great players who also appear to be stand up guys. But I also used to like your fans before you started hating on Uconn for their success. If you want to pin your hate on text messaging that isn't even illegal anymore, go for it, but that's pretty sad. Especially as we all know it's just jealousy.

Best of luck,

Storrs

and, of course, only one of them has been forced to vacate an entire NCAA tournament appearance and to repay all revenues from that tournament . . . but their fans still claim that illegal season as a legit Sweet 16 appearance

I realize you hate Syracuse, but pretending that your own doesn't stink will get you covered in it every time.

fwiw, I am one of the few Calhoun fans you will find over here. I admire both his coaching ability and his personal life story. But, I also believe Boeheim when he said "it's a good thing he (Calhoun) and I are friends, because otherwise he wouldn't have any."

FWIW I was told JB can't stand JC. Started with the negative recruiting during our dark times. Now, maybe shared cancer has changed that, but I was told this about 2 years ago. Maybe JB lives by the Don's advice: "Keep your friends close. Keep your enemies closer."
