Welcome to Curling is Cool Day!

Curling is Cool Day celebrates a sport that is cool, both because it is hip, and because it is played on ice. Curling is one of the world's oldest team sports. Heavy granite stones, usually weighing 44 pounds, are slid down a rectangular sheet of ice towards a target. The targets are made of four concentric circles, and stones that stop closer to the center of a target are given higher scores. Curling brooms are used by "sweepers" to help guide the stones, by sweeping the ice in front of the stones, as they make their way down the ice. Teams are usually composed of four players each, and each team gets eight stones. The game was given the nickname "The Roaring Game" because of the rumbling sound the stones make as they slide across the ice. It has also been called "Chess on ice."

Syracuse basketball's NCAA tournament resume: Orange clinging to bubble's edge (PS; Waters)

The reaction on the Syracuse bench showed just how much Wednesday night's game against North Carolina meant to the Orange.

Syracuse had a chance to register its biggest win of the season, but after rallying from 11 points down to tie the game, the Orange couldn't score in the game's last three minutes.

The 78-74 loss didn't hurt Syracuse's chances at an NCAA tournament bid, but it doesn't help either. And the Orange needs help.

Looking at BracketMatrix.com, which is a compilation of dozens of bracketologists' predictions, Syracuse is currently one of the last four teams in the tournament field.

In analyzing Syracuse's hopes for an NCAA bid, it's important to remember a new aspect to the NCAA Selection Committee's criteria for selecting and seeding teams this year. The NCAA has developed a quadrant system, which is designed to give added weight to games won away from home.

The quadrant system uses team's RPI and distinguishes wins and losses in four different quadrants:

Here is a review of the Quadrant system (with RPI numbers):

  • Quadrant 1: Home 1-30; Neutral 1-50; Away 1-75
  • Quadrant 2: Home 31-75; Neutral 51-100; Away 76-135
  • Quadrant 3: Home 76-160; Neutral 101-200; Away 136-240
  • Quadrant 4: Home 161-plus; Neutral 201-plus; Away 240-plus

Syracuse Sports Podcast: SU hoops and Bracketology with Patrick Stevens (PS; podcast; Axe)

Bubbles, bracketology and quadrants oh my!

What is the NCAA Tournament bubble status for the Syracuse University men's basketball team after a 78-74 loss to North Carolinaon Wednesday night?

College basketball writer and bracketologist Patrick Stevens joins me on the Syracuse Sports Podcast presented by Bill Rapp Superstorethis week to project the Orange's path forward and what they need to do to stay in the March Madness discussion.

Stevens also gives us his take on the new quadrant system that will help determine who is in and out of the big dance.

"I think we can evaluate the quadrant system on the night of Selection Sunday," Stevens said. "For now, we are all guessing. Anybody who tells you that they know how this system will impact selection without having seen what the committee's decisions are is kind of selling you a bill of goods."

UNC vs. Syracuse: Three things learned (tarheelblog.com; Ferenchick)

While they’ve played other close games during the six-game winning streak, UNC’s road victory in Syracuse was by far the most frustrating. They hung on for the win, but getting across the line was not pretty.

Here are three takeaways from the Tar Heels’ 78-74 win in the Carrier Dome.

This team is not immune from shooting itself in the foot

The reason this game got so close at the end was not because of Syracuse’s zone. UNC was shooting above 50% from the field for a large portion of the game. They had 25 assists on 29 made field goals for the game. They handled the zone with not a ton of trouble.

The issues started when the Orange started to press, but even then, it wasn’t because the press started forcing turnovers. The Tar Heels broke it fairly easily a bunch of times, they just then started playing dumb when they got across halfcourt.

Auburn's New Hope Mills Cafe: Home of the perfect pancake (Dining out review) (PS; Paventi)

Bags of New Hope Mills pancake mixes dot supermarket shelves throughout Central and Western New York, but it takes a trip to Auburn to learn the proper means of their preparation.

A New Hope Mills complete buttermilk pancake is 10 to 12 inches across and about one-quarter inch thick. It is pillowy and fluffy on the inside with a golden exterior that is cooked to a crunch but without burning. Where diner flapjacks take on a cake-like texture and flavor, the New Hope Mills pancake is crisp and dense. Its flavor is buttery and sweet, even before topping it with homemade maple butter or pancake syrup.

It's the pancake that other pancakes wish they could become.

A single is $3. A short stack of two is $4, while a tall stack of three is $5. We enjoyed ours as part of the country breakfast ($9), which included two pancakes, two slices of bacon or sausage and two eggs any style.

We chose bacon and were promptly asked where we wanted it regular or crispy, the first time we were ever offered the option at a restaurant. The chestnut-brown slices of bacon crumbled when bitten with no resistance or chewiness from exterior fat. Scrambled eggs accompanying the breakfast were creamy in texture in flavor.

In response to being listed (in hand-writing and without any indication of any payment) in the documents released by Yahoo earlier today, John Gillon says Steven Pina is a "family friend" and he "never received any type of payment."
