SU Scoring Leader at Celebrity Wheelchair Basketball Game (bigfrog104.com; Polly)

It's time for the 16th annual Sitrin Celebrity Classic Wheelchair Basektball game. It's Thursday, April 19th at Utica College with Syracuse University's scoring leader.

Headlining this year's event are Syracuse University basketball legends Lawrence Moten and Eric Devendorf, as well as Olympic bronze medalist Erin Hamlin. You'll have the opportunity to get autographs with all of them after half time.

"These Sitrin stars are extremely strong, extremely fast, very proficient and the celebrities struggle, as they should, because they're not use to using the wheelchair on a daily basis," says Marc DePerno, Director of Sitrin Stars Adaptive Sports Program. "We want to showcase their amazing abilities."

At half time, you could compete in a three point competition against Moten and Devendorf. Raffle tickets will be available for that and a record raffle gives you a chance to play on the celebrity team.

Tickets are only $10 for adults and $5 for students. You can pick up yours at Sitrin or at the door. Doors open at 6pm and the game starts at 6:30.

"All the money stays local" says DePerno. "It helps us buy new wheelchairs for a variety of sports. It helps local athletes train and compete, both locally and a far."

Devendorf is no stranger to Wheelchair basketball. He took part 4 years ago with the late Pearl Washington.

Evaluating SU’s top offerees and their chances of coming to Syracuse – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Raucci)

Heading into the offseason, everything seemed right in the world of SU basketball. The Orange had just made a magical run to the Sweet 16 and prized recruit Darius Bazley was on his way to SU in the next few months. It’s kind of funny how quickly things can change in less than a month.

Now, with Bazley on his way to the G League, the question becomes if SU can find a new stud in the next couple of recruiting cycles. Remember, Bazley would have been the Orange’s first top-ten recruit since Carmelo Anthony, so it’s not like these kinds of opportunities come around every year.

But, with that being said, SU has offered a few of those studs in the class of 2019 and each of them comes with some tantalizing qualities that Orange fans would love to see in Central New York. But, will they end up here? Well, let’s break down the top three players in the class of 2019 that SU has extended an offer to and how likely it is they come to Syracuse.

Jalen Lecque (Five-Star, No. 10 ESPN, No. 12 247 Sports)

The top-rated offeree in the 2019 recruiting cycle for SU, Lecque is a combo guard from The Bronx who plays at Christ School in Arden, NC. Listed at 6-foot-4, 185 pounds, Lecque has great size, especially if you want to play him at the point guard position, which, in my opinion, is where he looks most comfortable. It’s apt that the one is where he fits in best because he is drawing a lot of comparisons to one of the best point guards in the world, Russel Westbrook. Lecque has silly bounce and has thrown down some of the wildest in-game dunks I have ever seen, just take a look for yourself.Outside of the athleticism, Lecque’s best attribute is his ability to penetrate and score in traffic. He’s crafty near the bucket and can create his own shot and finish through traffic. He really fits the quick, athletic mold of your typical NYC guard (think Kemba Walker or Tiny Archibald, but with better size.

Here’s how the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act could affect SU sports (dailyorange.com; Gutierrez)

Earlier this year, Tom McMillen was catching up with some members of the United States Congress. McMillen, a former professional basketball player and congressman himself, said he wanted to know why the sprawling tax reform bill seemingly targeted college athletics revenue.

“They told me they felt college sports started looking more like a business,” McMillen said. “And they feel like athletic departments should be taxed more like a business.”

Last month, the NCAA reported generating $1.06 billion in revenue for the 2016-17 school year, and some athletic departments have recently reported record revenues. McMillen is president and CEO of LEAD1, an organization that represents athletics directors and programs at the FBS level. While college sports remain largely tax exempt, McMillen said he fears the tax law rolling out in 2018 could hurt non-revenue-generating sports.

Two of college sports’ largest income streams, television revenue and corporate sponsorships, are not taxed. But athletic departments such as the one at Syracuse University have started navigating a new terrain under the tax law. Among the law’s provisions: A nonprofit’s five highest paid employees will generally subject their employer to a new 21 percent excise tax of some of their pay if they make more than $1 million a year in taxable compensation.

A true gentleman and a great guy.
As you might suspect, terrific to hear his basketball stories.
My wife's high school classmate was captain of one of Vic's teams.
