Welcome to New Kids on the Block Day!

Today we celebrate the boy band New Kids on the Block, one of the most successful groups of the late 1980s. They set the template for future boy bands, such as the Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, and One Direction. The day was declared by Massachusetts governor Michael Dukakis on April 24, 1989.

Maurice Starr, who had previously helped the R&B group New Edition achieve success, started a talent search in Boston with hopes of forming another group. He brought together Donnie Wahlberg, brothers Jordan and Jon Knight, Danny Wood, and Joey McIntyre. After originally being called Nynuk, they became New Kids on the Block. Starr held many roles with the group, being their manager and producer, as well as choreographer and chief songwriter.

Syracuse Basketball: Tyus Battle’s decision was exceptionally wise (itlh.com; Adler)

Tyus Battle, the sophomore star of the Syracuse basketball squad, may or may not take his talents to the next level in the short term. Only time will tell.

There are many things that I admire about Tyus Battle.

First and foremost, he seems like a classy, respectful young man who has a good head on his shoulders, the result of tremendous family influences in his life.

Battle takes his studies seriously.

He’s energetic and passionate on the court, but isn’t one to intentionally show up his opponents.

Battle doesn’t like to lose, although he’s graceful in defeat. He isn’t afraid to display his emotions when he and his teammates succeed, yet Battle lets his skills speak for themselves, rather than doing a whole lot of talking himself.

From Flint to Syracuse, Eric Devendorf’s charitable efforts continue with spring clothing drive (DO; Gutierrez)

With NBA dreams, Eric Devendorf hoped to rise from the Detroit area to high school power Oak Hill Academy, through Syracuse University and the pro ranks.

But he went undrafted in 2009 despite ranking 14th on SU’s all-time scoring list with 1,680 points.

He used to give less thought to giving back to the community, he said. That was his former self. He visited local hospitals in Syracuse as part of a team tradition, but he said he hadn’t taken it to heart until recently. After playing seven seasons in the then-NBA Development League and overseas, he returned to Syracuse in 2016 as the Orange’s assistant strength coach.

And Devendorf gave up his dream of playing professionally so he could be back in Syracuse with his two daughters. He starred for Boeheim’s Army last summer and fulfilled his late father’s wish two seasons ago. He came back to SU because he wanted to prioritize family over work and be more associated with his daughters’ lives. Now he wants to prioritize giving back.

At 31 years old, Devendorf is known nearly as much for his community involvement as his on-court work. He helped raise $10,000 for Flint, Michigan for its water crisis. Sometimes he trains local children who cannot afford basketball lessons. He has spoken at local schools. He led a shoe drive last fall. He plays in charity basketball games, including a wheelchair basketball game held last Thursday. This week he launched a spring cleaning, where anyone can drop off gently-used clothing at five AmeriCU Credit Union locations in Syracuse, Liverpool, Camillus and Fayetteville.

Syracuse Basketball: Expectations for the Orange will change without Tyus Battle (bustingbrackets.com; Walter-Warner)

Tyus Battle is currently considering whether or not to remain in the 2018 NBA Draft or return to the Syracuse Orange.

Everyone counted out the Syracuse Orange at the start of the NCAA Tournament, due to their status as one of the last teams in. Then, Tyus Battle led the team on an unforgettable run.

He might be leaving for greener, richer pastures this spring. The Orange will be irreparably harmed if he does so.

On Friday, Syracuse announced that Battle was throwing his name into the NBA Draft waters. He did not sign with an agent, however, leaving the door open for a return to the Orange.

That’s good news for Syracuse, who desperately needs his services to make another run next year.

Battle was far and away one of the best players in the entire ACC last year, not just at Syracuse. He averaged 19.2 points per game, which ranked third in the conference. Durability was also a key with Battle, who averaged an astounding 39 minutes per game; he played every minute in the NCAA Tournament.

A Sweet 16 loss to Duke revealed just how essential Battle can be. He scored 19 points, nailing four of his eight attempts from three-point range. He also dished five assists in the four-point loss to the Blue Devils.

The Marketplace (dukebasketballreport.com; Featherston)

The start of the 2018-19 season is still almost seventh months away, but the season will be shaped by what happens in the next month.

The deadline for the NBA draft early entry closed Sunday night, but many of the players who put their names in have until May 30 to withdraw without penalty. Those decisions will have a HUGE impact on the next season.

At the same time, the free agent market is in full swing as hundreds of players will be transferring to new schools. Those who do so under the old transfer rules will have to sit out a season, but dozens are the so-called grad transfers, who will be able to play immediately. At least half the ACC is heavily invested in the transfer marker and their success (or failure) could have a significant impact on next year’s race.

Best guess – most of the players on the “testing the waters” list will return to school. The two most likely to stay in the draft are Battle of Syracuse and Robinson of Boston College. Both are borderline first-round draft picks and if they get solid guarantees from some NBA team, they’re gone.

Virginia Tech Basketball: Hokies on the right path in the ACC (bustingbrackets.com; Anderson)

The Virginia Tech Hokies are coming off back-to-back seasons in the NCAA Tournament as head coach Buzz Williams has something special brewing in Blacksburg.

The Virginia Tech Hokies have created quite the buzz this past couple of seasons. They posted a 21-12 record (10-8 ACC) in 2017-18. The year prior they went 22-11 record (10-8 ACC). With back-to-back seasons of double-digit wins in the toughest conference in the country and two NCAA tournament appearances to show for it, this next season could be the ultimate test.

The Hokies return four starters from last year’s squad, including guard Justin Robinson. Robinson is coming off a second-team All-ACC selection after leading the team in scoring (14.0 points per game). He also led the team in assists per game (5.6). Now, with experience under their belt, the Virginia Tech Hokies look to be on the right path.

The biggest addition to the Virginia Tech roster was freshman Nickeil Alexander-Walker (NAW). He was fourth on the team in scoring (10.7 points per game) and third in rebounds at 3.8 per contest. He was a jumpstart to the Hokies offense in 2017-18 but certainly not a bigger X-Factor than returning reserve Chris Clarke.

Clemson Basketball: Baehre could be a future star in the ACC (rubbingtherock.com; Ingram)

Clemson basketball has added its sixth transfer in three years, and he could be a future star in the ACC.
When you look back at the success of the 2017-18 Clemson basketball season, it would be hard to discount the contributions of the five transfers. Just name an important statistic. Scoring? Steals? Marcquise Reed(Robert Morris) led the Tigers with 15.8 points and 1.7 steals. Rebounding? Shot blocking? Elijah Thomas(Texas A&M) averaged 8.1 rebounds and 2.3 blocks. Assists? Shelton Mitchell(Vanderbilt) averaged 3.6 to lead the team. Three-point shooting? Mark Donnal(Michigan) hit 48 percent of his shots from distance. And defensively, David Skara(Valparaiso) made a difference in the team’s improvement in that area.

After committing to Clemson last week, UNC Asheville sophomore Jonathan Baehre is the next transfer heading to Clemson. Head coach Brad Brownell didn’t have to look far to scout him either because on Dec. 3, 2017 Clemson defeated Asheville 83-52, and Baehre scored nine points and had five rebounds. On the season, the 6-foot-9, 205 pound forward/center played in all 34 games and started 20. He averaged 7.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, blocked 1.8 shots and hit 37 percent on threes.

“I think this kid is a player to watch over the next two years in college basketball.”
Baehre will have two years of eligibility left, after he sits out next season.

Upstate NY's best places to hike: 3 Central NY parks make 2018 ranking (PS; Rink)

FULL RANKING: The 25 best places to hike in Upstate New York, ranked for 2018

A satisfying hike really comes down to two things: plenty of trails and great views. The abundance of mountains, lakes, and gorges makes Upstate New York a great place to hike.

Yelp's 25 best places for hiking vary in challenge and landscape, offering an outdoor adventure for everyone. Three Central New York parks, each known for their waterfalls, made the cut. Two parks were within the top five and one placed 15th.

15. Buttermilk Falls State Park (Ithaca, Tompkins County)

4.5 stars, 62 reviews

One reviewer says: "There are two parts to the park, upper and lower falls and both are gorgeous. Both are great for hiking, however you can drive right up to the lower falls and park right in front of the massive waterfall itself. There are stone steps that go along the side of the waterfall that you can hike up. It's worth the steep trip for such a wonderful view."

My son is the faculty athletic rep at UNCA. They seem to lose their best player to a big 5 school every year. They also lost their bball coach to a higher-paying school. Such is life at small schools.
