Welcome to Go Fly a Kite Day!

Fly a Kite Day takes place on the anniversary of the date in 1752 when Benjamin Franklin flew a kite in a thunderstorm, with the intent of proving that lightning was caused by a discharge of electricity (some sources say he flew his kite on June 10). His experiment led to further understanding of positive and negative charges, the proving that lightning was an electrical discharge, and to the invention of the lightning rod—which provided a safe way to discharge electricity and a way to prevent fires. Lightning rods are still used today to protect buildings, ships, and people.

Franklin began his experiments with electricity in 1747 and began hypothesizing about the connection between electricity and lightning two years later. He set out to prove his hypothesis; his idea was to erect iron rods into storm clouds to attract electricity. He believed he would need to be on high ground for his experiment to work, but he was in Philadelphia, a city that is quite flat. At first, he was waiting for the steeple to be finished at Christ Church, believing that he could use it for his experiment.

Syracuse commit Brycen Goodin has a a certain level of smoothness game where he makes everything look easy out there. He just put all that on display this past weekend, and it's clear to see why the Orangemen are anxious to have him on campus with the class of 2019.

The ACC Network: What Impact Will It Have? (dukebasketballreport.com; King)

The N&O has a good article up on the nascent ACC network and what it could mean to the league.

The ACC is behind the other Power Five conferences in revenue at this point and with the whole business rotating around the sun that is football, it is at a disadvantage with the Big 10, SEC and Big 12 and arguably the PAC-12 as well.

But perhaps not permanently.

The ACC has one huge advantage and that’s real estate. The East Coast has the most people and the ACC is the dominant presence in collegiate sports on the East Coast.

The Big Ten pioneered the whole idea of a conference network and did so brilliantly, but you could certainly argue that it was a move born of weakness.

The Rust Belt states are contracting population wise with most of the new residents being immigrants. We looked this up a few years ago just out of curiosity and it was really striking. There’s also no guarantee that those newcomers will be football fans and we would assume a fair number prefer soccer and will do so for the foreseeable future.

Secondly, as the Big Ten states are losing population their recruiting bases are hurting. Consider Flynt and Detroit. Those towns produced tremendous basketball players for decades. Lately? Not so much. Understandably, given the problems those cities have had, people have left.

The Big Ten’s push for football satellite camps looks different in this light, doesn’t it?

Better Know a Player: Is Wake Forest's Olivier Sarr the ACC's next stretch-5? - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)

At the ACC Analytics page, we’re big fans of comedian Stephen Colbert. Back when Colbert had his late night show The Colbert Report on Comedy Central, he used to run a reoccurring segment called “Better Know a District.” In these pieces, Colbert would give his audience the background of a different US Congressional district. They were brilliant.

For our purposes, though, we’ll do this with ACC basketball players — less notable players that will make a bigger impact in the 2018-19 season than previous years. The first of these will start with Wake Forest sophomore center Olivier Sarr.

French Introduction

Prior to his arrival in Winston-Salem, Olivier Sarr was an under-the-radar recruit, at least domestically. The 6-foot-11 Sarr, a former 3-star prospect, hails from France; he committed to Danny Manning’s programlater in the 2017 cycle, too — last April. (Not long after John Collins hired an agent and decided to remain in the NBA Draft.)

A few other notable programs offered Sarr as well: Vanderbilt, Cal and Central Florida.

Sarr first came on the scene at the at the 2014 and 2015 Adidas Next Generation events in Europe; however, his stock jumped after the 2016 FIBA U17 World Championships. At that event, Sarr averaged 13.7 minutes per game — and 4.5 blocks and 12.5 rebounds per 40 minutes.

Kasai Ramen: A chef's passion for noodles and broth finds Armory Square home (PS; Weaver)

A bowl of ramen at a good noodle shop arrives at the table in about five minutes, from order to first slurp.

But making that mix of broths and chewy noodles and braised meats takes days.

Kyle Mastropietro knows. He's been working on perfecting his noodles, broth, dashi, tare, pickled vegetables, six-minute eggs and chashu pork for at least five years.

He's planning to open Kasai Ramen - Syracuse's first ramen shop - in early fall in Armory Square.

Syracuse, it seems, is ready. He sold more than 300 bowls of ramen at a pop-up dinner at Now & Later in April. At Taste of Syracuse, he said he sold 3,800 bowls of $1 samples at the two-day festival.

"It's nuts," he said of the response, before he'd even finalized his lease at 218 Walton St. "The city wants it so bad."

Mastropietro's plans at Kasai Ramen involve more than bowls full of steaming noodles. He aims to offer meat and vegetarian-based ramens, starting at around $12.
