Welcome to International Panic Day!

The word panic is derived from the ancient Greek word Pan. Pan was the Greek god of shepherds, woods, and pastures, and when he would awake from a nap he would let out a yell that caused flocks to stampede. Greek authors coined the word “panikon” from this, which meant “sudden fear”. Panic is “a sudden sensation of fear, which is so strong as to dominate or prevent reason or logical thinking, replacing it with an animalistic fight-or-flight reaction.” Panic can happen in an individual or it can happen in large groups. It is not healthy for people to be in a constant panic, as stress levels are raised which can be detrimental to health. This day is dedicated to this sensation of panicking.

What to expect from Tyus Battle next season (Syracuse basketball player forecasts) (PS; Waters)

Tyus Battle had one of the greatest seasons for any sophomore in Syracuse history.

He was Syracuse's go-to guy on a team that didn't have many other options to go to.
His 19.2 points per game were the most for a sophomore since Dave Bing averaged 22.2 points per game in the 1963-64 season.
Battle's scoring average went up 7.9 points per game from his freshman to his sophomore year. That's an incredible increase for a player who started out in double-figures (Battle averaged 11.3 points as a freshman).
Preston Shumpert's 9.2 jump from 10.3 points per game to 19.5 ppg is the school record for a player who was in double-figures to start.

2017-18 statistics

Battle put up some incredible numbers in the 2017-18 season. He broke the school's record for minutes played, going 39 minutes per game to break Billy Owens' 27-year-old record of 38 minutes per game.
Battle averaged 19.2 points per game, the most for any SU player since Hakim Warrick in 2004-05.
Battle also became just the fifth player in SU history to reach 1,000 career points by the end of his sophomore year, joining Lawrence Moten, Jonny Flynn, Billy Owens and Gerry McNamara.

OrangeHoops: Father and Son Duos for Syracuse Basketball (mightyray.blogspot.com; OrangeRay)

Happy Father’s Day!

In honor of the day, I wanted to recognize the father/son combinations that have played and/or coached for Syracuse basketball. This fall, Jim and Buddy Boeheim will become the seventh such combination for the Orange. Below are the father/son combination in chronological order.

The Baysingers (Reaves ‘Ribs’ and Reaves Jr). The Baysingers were the first father/son combination in Syracuse basketball history. Ribs was a solid reserve on the 1921-1922 team playing both center and guard, and starting a handful of games. He would play only his sophomore year. He was a star on the football field at both guard and end, as well as an outfielder on the baseball team for three years. Reaves Jr was a reserve center on the Syracuse basketball team for one season. He was a gifted football player like his father, and played quarterback for the football team in 1944. Reaves Jr would enroll in the Naval Academy as a result of World War II, and would end up a star quarterback for the Navy football team.

The Suprunowicz (Dick and Bill). Dick was a defensive stalwart on the Syracuse basketball team for three seasons, helping guide the Orangemen to their first NIT appearance in 1950. Dick would score 526 points in his career with 6.7 ppg. Bill was a reserve guard on the basketball team for three seasons, from 1972 to 1974. He would score 30 points in 20 games.

Stephanie Miner to run for NY governor as independent (PS; Weiner)

Former Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner plans to launch an independent campaign for governor in a bid to upset Gov. Andrew Cuomo in November, the New York Times reported today.

"I cannot be a silent witness to what I think is a corrupt political culture that is hurting real people every day," Miner told the Times in an interview.

Miner served eight years as Syracuse's mayor, and could not run again in November 2017 because she was term-limited. Since then, she has considered running for Congress twice, challenging Cuomo in a Democratic primary and running for governor on the Working Families Party Line.

She began considering an independent run for governor last month after Democrat Cynthia Nixon decided to challenge Cuomo in a Democratic primary. Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro has the Republican nomination for November.

Miner's entry into the race sets up a potential four-way race for governor because Nixon has already secured the Working Families Party line for the general election.

Go Stephanie. Go Cynthia. Stay in until the last vote is counted.
