Welcome to National Creamsicle Day!

In 1905, eleven-year-old Frank Epperson encased vanilla ice cream inside of frozen fruit juice and called it an Epsicle. His creation is similar to what we now call a Creamsicle, the cool treat which we celebrate today. The Creamsicle has a flat bar shape with rounded ends, vanilla cream at its center, and a fruity ice covering. Because of its two main components, it is sometimes known as a 50-50 bar. The classic flavor is orange, but it comes in a variety of flavors, including raspberry, lime, cherry, grape, and blueberry. It is also available in healthier options, such as low-fat, low-calorie, or sugar-free.

National Creamsicle Day is being observed today! It has always been observed annually on August 14th.

Khadim Sy no longer with Virginia Tech basketball program (richmond.com; Barber)

Sophomore center Khadim Sy is no longer with the Virginia Tech men’s basketball program.

Sy has transferred to a junior college, a program representative confirmed Monday.

The Dakar, Senegal, native played at Oak Hill Academy as a high school student, living with a host family. As a freshman at Virginia Tech, he became a starter, averaging 4 points and 2.7 rebounds.

Last year, he left the program and spent the fall semester at Tallahassee Community College in Florida before rejoining the Hokies in December.

Sy redshirted after his return with three seasons of eligibility remaining.

Earlier this offseason, redshirt freshman guard Tyrie Jackson transferred to a junior college in Florida.

Little bit of this, little bit of that: How Chris Clarke adds value to Virginia Tech - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)

The 2018-19 season could be a special one in Blacksburg for Buzz Williams and Virginia Tech. The Hokies return most of their firepower from an offense that ranked 24th nationally in offensive efficiency against man-to-man defenses, according to Synergy Sports.

Point guard Justin Robinson will run the show, armed with a trio of shooters — Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Ahmed Hill, Ty Outlaw. Robinson is one of the game’s best at getting his own shot (60.5 eFG% on isolation attempts), and creating for others, too: 32.9 percent assist rate.

Up front, Kerry Blackshear Jr. — a skilled interior scorer (69.5 FG% at the rim, per Synergy) — also returns. Those are the ingredients for an outstanding offense; in 2018, the Hokies ranked No. 28 in the nation in adjusted offensive rating, per KenPom.

As nice as that nucleus of veteran players is for Virginia Tech, Williams can rest easy knowing he has one of the league’s top glue guys: Chris Clarke.

The runner-up to De’Andre Hunter for ACC Sixth Man of the Year in 2018, Chris Clarke brings so much to the table for Virginia Tech. Clarke, who become the first player in program history to record a triple-double back in 2016, can defend all five positions. In fact, he spend chucks of the 2017-18 season moonlighting as Tech’s de facto backup center.

At 6-foot-6, Clarke is an excellent rebounder, too, especially on the defensive end. When on the floor last season, the Virginia Beach native grabbed 24.4 percent of available defensive rebounds — a top-60 number nationally, per KenPom.

As he guards the post on one end, Clarke also functions as the team’s top secondary creator — behind Robinson. The slashing Clarke handed out 6.9 assists per 100 possessions last season; he was one of only 14 ACC players in 2017-18 to play at least 500 minutes, post an assist rate north of 20 percent and a steal rate of at least two percent.

Lourdes Camp in Skaneateles closes after algae bloom makes water unsafe (PS; Moriarty)

Update: State officials said late Monday night that tests show the lake water at Lourdes Camp is safe to drink and to swim in.

Lourdes Camp in Skaneateles is closing, asking parents to pick up their children "as soon as possible" after blue-green algae blooms made the camp's water unsafe to drink or swim in.

"I'm sorry to inform you we are closing camp immediately, and request the pickup of your child as soon as possible," camp Director Mike Preston said in an email to parents late Monday afternoon. "This decision was made in consultation with the Onondaga County Health Department."

Preston said the water on the camp's 1,500-foot lakefront was deemed unsafe to swim in because of the algae blooms. In addition, the camp draws its water from the lake, so the camp's water supply is unsafe to drink, he said.

"While this is a hard decision, the safety of our campers and staff is our number one priority," he said.
