Welcome to National Bacon Lover's Day!

National Bacon Lover's Day is dedicated to the popular treat cut from the meat of a pig. In the United States, bacon refers to meat from the belly of the pig, known as the pork belly. Bacon from the loin is called Canadian bacon. To make bacon, the pork is cured using salt, and is then dried, boiled, or smoked. The smoking of bacon is often done with hickory, mesquite, or maple wood, and flavors such as brown sugar or maple may be added. More often than not, bacon is pan fried, and it is popular as a breakfast food, in sandwiches like the BLT or club sandwich, as a complement to salads, and in wrapping other foods. "Bacon mania" has swept the United States and Canada since the late 1990's, where there has been a great increase in the amount of bacon being eaten, and in the amount of new bacon recipes. The high sodium and nitrate content of bacon that lower its health benefits has not seemed to much slow down the bacon craze.

Will Syracuse basketball's 2018-19 non-conference schedule help NCAA tournament chances? (PS; Waters)

The Syracuse basketball team faced a rigorous non-conference schedule last season.

Syracuse's non-conference schedule, which included games against Kansas, Maryland, St. Bonaventure, Buffalo, Connecticut and Georgetown, wound up ranked No. 21 in the nation.

That schedule wound up being one of the reasons that Syracuse snuck into the NCAA tournament field despite a 20-13 regular season record.

Syracuse officials have announced the complete non-conference schedule for the 2018-19 season.

Here is a comparison of the upcoming schedule against last year's non-conference slate, including a team-by-team look at the 2018-19 non-conference games.

Syracuse's 2017-18 schedule

Last year, the NCAA introduced its new quadrant system for rating the difficulty of a team's schedule.

The quadrant system still used the old Ratings Percentage Index (RPI), but it gave teams more credit for playing either on neutral courts or away from home.

Buffalo (RPI 26) and St. Bonaventure (RPI 27) wound up being key games for Syracuse. They were two of SU's three Quadrant 1 games in the non-conference portion of the schedule. The third was against Kansas on a neutral floor.

Syracuse Basketball: Orange at No. 6 in offseason ACC power ranking (itlh.com; Patrick)

Sports Illustrated recently revealed their summer power rankings for the ACC and the Syracuse basketball program ended up ranked sixth.

Outside of central New York, not many predicted the Syracuse basketball season to end in the Sweet 16 last year. But that’s exactly what the Orange did as an 11th seed in last season’s NCAA Tournament as they upset six-seeded TCU and three-seeded Michigan State before eventually falling at the hands of Duke.

Coming off their surprise run in the NCAA Tournament last year, Syracuse is heading into the 2018-19 season with some pretty high hopes. Especially with a number of their top performers from a year ago returning to the court for the upcoming season.

Expected back for the Orange are their top three scorers from last year (Tyus Battle, Oshae Brissett, Frank Howard) and a handful of other players who spent a significant amount of time on the court during the 2017-18 season including forward Marek Dolezaj and center Paschal Chukwu.

With the experience on their side, Syracuse figures to among the top 25 teams in the nation this year. But how high or low they will be placed on the preseason polls remains to be seen.

How it’s made: NY State Fair food, Heart Attack

The Heart Attack is a deep-fried creation that starts with two butterflied Hofmann hotdogs. Chili and cheese go in next. As you might have guessed, five strips of bacon hold the entire thing together. Fresh jalapeños, then cheese and chocolate sauce, and a third of a Hershey chocolate bar, all serve as garnish.
