Welcome to National Mammography Day!

National Mammography Day is observed annually on the third Friday in October as part of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

This day serves as a reminder to all women that the best defense is early detection. A mammogram can often detect a problem before there is any outward physical sign. Make sure you get your regular checkups.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Set up a mammogram and use #NationalMammographyDay to post on social media.

Syracuse's Brissett Gets Early Attention from Julius Erving Award (bcsnn.com)

Syracuse forward Oshae Brissett is one of 20 players selected for the 2019 Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award "watch list, according to The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Named after Class of 1993 Hall of Famer and 16-year professional basketball player Julius Erving, the annual honor in its fifth year recognizes the top small forwards in Division I men's college basketball.

A national committee comprising top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates.

"Julius Erving is well-known for his flare and competitive spirit which have made him one of the most admired and respected in the game across all generations," said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Basketball Hall of Fame. "It is an honor to have his involvement in the Naismith Starting 5 and we look forward to recognizing the young man who most closely mirrors the passion and athleticism of Dr. J this season."

Brissett started all 37 games of his rookie season last winter. He averaged 14.9 points and 8.8 rebounds per contest. Brissett was named to the ACC All-Freshman Team. He finished fifth among Division I performers in minutes played average (38.1).

Julius Erving attended the University of Massachusetts and averaged 26.3 points and 20.2 rebounds per game, making him one of only six NCAA men's basketball players to average more than 20 points and 20 rebounds per game. After two seasons, Erving made the jump to the American Basketball Association and was the league's most recognizable player when it merged with the National Basketball Association in 1976. During his professional career, Erving won three championships, four most valuable player awards and three scoring titles. In 1996, he was named a member of the NBA's 50th Anniversary All-Time Team.

Illinois Basketball: Illini target Quincy Guerrier sets commitment date (writingillini.com; Woodcock)

The Illinois basketball team needs to land a few players who are starting to come down to a final decision here shortly.

One of the big Illini targets for 2019, Quincy Guerrier, decided to release when he was going to make his final announcement on where he will be playing basketball next season. He released a short video about when he will make his decision, and at the end the video he said it will be on October 31.

Guerrier is a big-time recruit for the class of 2019. He has a lot of recruiting attention and for good reasons. He is a 6-foot-7, 190-pound small forward from Thetford Academy in Quebec City, Quebec. He is rated as a four-star recruit who is the No. 48 player in the class of 2019 and the No. 13 small forward in the nation.

Why can’t Virginia Basketball win in the postseason? (streakingthelawn.com; Hobeck)

I think it might have been legendary Chicago Cubs broadcaster Harry Caray who once said that fans of the once-woebegone North Siders were the best fans in baseball. Why?

Because they had to be.

Much like Cubs fans went over a century without winning the World Series, Virginia Cavaliers basketball fans can probably sympathize some after recent years. For the last five years, the Hoos have had regular seasons ranging from good to spectacular, with staggering defensive numbers that have put them in a position to win more than 80 percent of their games in that time span.

There’s just one problem. Like it or not, teams are ultimately judged and a champion is ultimately crowned by a three-week single-elimination thunderdome that rarely produces the nation’s best college basketball team late on a Monday night in early April. Be that as it may, with an NCAA tournament seeding of 1, 2, 1, 5, and 1 since 2014, the Cavaliers have gone just 7-5 in the Big Dance. Evaluated in a vacuum, each season-ending defeat is explainable to at least some degree. Now, after five straight tournament berths without a Final Four appearance and just one truly deep run (the 2016 Elite Eight), I think it’s fair to call this more than just a bunch of flukes. Especially after becoming the first No. 1 seed to lose to a 16 seed last season, it’s fair to say that the Hoos seem to have a fatal flaw when it comes to the postseason*. The question is, what is that malady?

In the region: Basketball recruit Emanuel Miller picks Virginia Tech (roanoke.com; Berman)

Toronto native Emanuel Miller announced Thursday on Twitter that he has verbally committed to the Virginia Tech men’s basketball program.

The 6-foot-6, 200-pound Miller is rated the No. 2 Canadian in the 2018-19 recruiting class, according to ESPN. He is rated the No. 34 senior small forward among Americans and Canadians combined, according to ESPN.

He spent last season playing for prep powerhouse La Lumiere School in Indiana. For this school year, he is attending Napa Christian in California and will be playing for the Golden State Prep postgraduate team.

Miller played for the Canadian team that lost to the United States in the final of the FIBA Under-18 Americas Championship this year. He had 31 points and 14 rebounds in a semifinal win over Puerto Rico and scored 11 points in the final. Virginia Tech assistant coach Jamie McNeilly was an assistant on the Canadian squad.

Miller played for the Canadian squad that won the gold medal at the FIBA Under-19 World Cup last year in Egypt. McNeilly was also an assistant on that squad.

Illinois, Oklahoma, Ohio State and Notre Dame were reportedly interested in Miller as well.

Miller becomes the fourth member of Tech coach Buzz Williams’ 2018-19 recruiting class.

Georgia Tech Basketball 2018-19 Player Previews: #12 F Khalid Moore (yellowjackedup.com; Callaghan-Croley)

True freshman Khalid Moore comes to Georgia Tech with high expectations surrounding him as he follows in the footsteps up Tech legend Kenny Anderson.

Back in 1989, a young Kenny Anderson came to Georgia Tech from Archbishop Molloy High School in New York. Nearly 30 years later, another Archbishop Molloy grad comes to Tech in the form of 6-foot-6 and 200-pound forward Khalid Moore.

Moore, a three-star recruit from last year’s recruiting class was ranked by 247Sports’s composite rankings ranked Moore as the 214th best recruit in the country, the 48th ranked small forward, and sixth best player from the Empire State. It also marked the second straight recruiting class that the Jackets pulled a player out of New York, joining Jose Alvarado.

Expectations set for men’s basketball (thebvnewspaper.com; Staff)

Despite losing captains, Bonnies still aiming high

Coming off possibly the most successful season for St. Bonaventure men’s basketball since making the Final Four in 1970, this year’s Bonnies look very different from last year’s team.

That team last year beat Syracuse at the Carrier Dome for the first time ever, enjoyed a 14-game win streak and won its first NCAA Tournament game in 48 years. This year, they’ll look to pick up right where they left off.

However, they will be without all three captains from last year’s squad. Jaylen Adams, Matt Mobley and Idris Taqqee all made their final appearances for the Bonnies in the team’s 77-62 loss to the University of Florida in the NCAA Tournament’s Round of 64.

“We’ve lost a lot,” said head coach Mark Schmidt. “But we’ve built this program on those young guys taking that next step in their development, and that’s the hope here.”

Leadership will be key to the success of this year’s team. Not only did the Bonnies lose 42 points per game, 186 threes and 280 assists from last year’s captains, but the team lost three talented ball players who led by example on and off the court.

“What I say in the locker room is really important,” said Schmidt. “But what’s said when I leave the locker room is more important. That’s what leadership is about.”

Buffalo Ranked 35th in Andy Katz’s Preseason Power Poll, and That’s Good News (hustlebelt.com; Snyder)

Andy Katz put out his preseason power ranking for the upcoming basketball season. Number 1 was Kentucky, to the shock of no one. However, the Buffalo Bulls, who were knocked out of the 2018 NCAA tournament by Kentucky, came in ranked 35th. You can read the entire rankings here. This is good news for the Buffalo Bulls and also for the entire conference.

Starting this high on such a prestigious power ranking gives a loaded Bulls squad a chance to stay on the tongues of the national media. This is an important part of the NCAA selection process. The momentum gained from knocking off Arizona in the first round continues. However for the Bulls to maintain this momentum, they must win. Their pre-conference schedule is not particularly loaded with big names, with the exception of a game against Syracuse on ESPN2. Any loss, even to a good mid-major like St. Bonaventure, will make all that hype disappear quickly.

The Bulls have the squad to keep the train rolling. As the article mentions, leading scorer CJ Massinburg returns. So does defensive stopper Dontay Caruthers. So does 6’7 guard Jeremy Harris, who was third on the team in scoring. Nick Perkins, the number 2 leading Bulls scorer from a year ago, also returns. The 6’9 inside presence is interestingly enough from Ypsilanti.

Another interesting tidbit to come out of the power rankings is that Mr. Katz mentions the Eastern Michigan Eagles as a potential roadblock for the Bulls. These two teams play each other on January 4th, the first conference game of the season for each team. The Eagles have an interesting non-conference schedule with a bunch of winnable games, plus contests against Duke and Kansas. The Eagles are also loaded in talent and their name might also be on the tongues of the national media. That Friday night game in early January could be very hyped.
