Welcome to National Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day!

New York is the perfect city in which to celebrate National Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day, thanks to the plethora of Jewish and Jewish-style delicatessens to be found throughout the city. The best way to celebrate any holiday devoted to a food item is, of course, to eat the thing. And, in New York, you have your choice among the historic delis such as Katz’s, Ben’s, Carnegie, etc. And remember the only proper bread on which to enjoy such a sandwich is rye!

Syracuse basketball at Duke: 10 Things to Watch For (PS; Waters)

The Syracuse Orange is going to have to bounce back quickly after its 73-59 loss to Georgia Tech on Saturday as the No. 1 team in the nation awaits tonight.

Syracuse (11-5 overall, 2-1 ACC) will travel to Durham to face the Duke Blue Devils (14-1, 3-0) at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Monday night.

The loss to Georgia Tech snapped Syracuse's modest four-game win streak during which it seemed that the Orange might have solved some of its offensive problems. Guess not.

Duke, meanwhile, has won nine straight after stunning Florida State with a buzzer-beater on Saturday for an 80-78 win over the Seminoles.

Here are 10 things to watch for in tonight's game:

Top-ranked Duke enjoyed an uplifting moment this weekend.

Syracuse had just the opposite.

Now the teams meet Monday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, N.C., after coming off extremely different outcomes. It's a rematch of last March's NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 matchup, a four-point win by Duke.

On Saturday in Tallahassee, Fla., Duke topped No. 13 Florida State 80-78 on Cam Reddish's 3-pointer with less than a second remaining. The result gave the Blue Devils (14-1, 3-0) consecutive ACC road victories.

"I know we feel very fortunate to win," Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said. "I think we earned it and if they would've won, they would've earned it. So, it's not a game that somebody lost, it's a game that somebody won. Those are the great games."

Reddish delivered at the end of a 23-point outing.

"Whenever any kid hits a game winner like that, its storybook," Krzyzewski said. "For our guys, it's our 15th game, a number of those guys have never been in an experience like this."

Duke played the second half without freshman sensation Zion Williamson, who was poked in the eye late in the first half after racking up 11 points and eight rebounds.

Duke Basketball: Struggling Syracuse is hoping to respond in Cameron (balldurham.com; Connelly
)

The Syracuse Orange are coming off of a terrible loss and they will have to put forth its best effort on Monday against the Duke Basketball team.

It’s been a wild ride of a season so far for the Syracuse Orange. The Orange came into the season ranked at No. 16 and got bumped up to No. 15 after the first week of the season, but have yet to make its way back into the Top 25 since.

Syracuse was able to secure two easy victories to start the season before falling to UCONN and the then No. 13 Oregon Ducks. However, the Orange would respond with five straight wins, most notably a win on the road against then No. 16 Ohio State and a home win against rival Georgetown.

Syracuse vs. Duke Basketball Fearless Prediction, Game Preview (CFN; Fiutak)

Broadcast
Date: Monday, January 14
Game Time: 7:00 ET
Venue: Cameron Indoor Stadium, Durham, NC
Network: ESPN

What’s Going To Happen
– So how does Duke get geared up again after that against Florida State? The Blue Devils survived on a late three from Cam Reddish, but it was RJ Barrett’s day with 32 points. Now it’s up to the Syracuse D to slow down the machine that might be without Zion Williamson after getting poked in the eye.

– This is an okay Orange team that got its doors blown off by Georgia Tech on Saturday in a 73-59 loss. The D melted down in the second half and couldn’t handle anything the Yellow Jackets did inside. Uh-oh.

– Normally, though, the Syracuse defense is more than fine. As always, the Orange are great at attacking the ball and forcing mistakes. They’re allowing just 62 points per game, but if this gets into any sort of a track meet, it won’t be pretty.

Syracuse Basketball: 5 things you need to know about Duke basketball (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

The Syracuse basketball squad now has the near impossible task of traveling to play the No. 1 Duke Blue Devils. Here’s what you need to know.

If the Syracuse basketball team thought Saturday’s game sucked vs Georgia Tech, they’re in for a very rude awakening on the road vs No. 1 Duke.

The Blue Devils started off their season with a 118-84 thrashing of No. 18 Kentucky. They set the tone incredibly early for what looks to be a very special season. Duke has already beaten five top-25 teams in the country, with their only smudge coming against No. 5 Gonzaga 89-87 on November 21st.

1979: Syracuse wins ‘brutal’ basketball game against Penn State (PS; Croyle)

Why Syracuse had to cancel the series with thelowly and dirty Nittany Lions...

When a person thinks of Syracuse versus Penn State, the mind automatically pictures the schools’ football rivalry, not basketball.

But on Jan. 10, 1979 the schools played a wild game at Manley Field House, a game in which many ways, was a preview to the rough and tumble days of the Big East Conference which got started later that year.

When it was over, all an exasperated Jim Boeheim could say was, “That was not basketball.”

Syracuse entered the game on a roll. The Orange were 11-2 and on a four-game winning streak. Their winning streak stood at home stood at 37, the best in the country. The Nittany Lions were going in the opposite direction, losing nine of their previous 15 games.

The game finished in a resounding 85-70 Syracuse victory, but the result was not what people were talking about the next day.

“It was impossible for the conscious mind to screen out the persistent madness” of the game the Post-Standard’s Mike Smith wrote in the next day’s newspaper.

Smith wrote that the crowd of 8,182 fans were treated to a game that mixed “brutality” with “exquisitely bungled offensive maneuvers” which he said, “created a delightfully comic rendition of the game.”

Syracuse Basketball: Predictions for monumental Duke matchup (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

The Syracuse basketball team has a grand opportunity vs the Duke Blue Devils on Monday night at Cameron Indoor. Here’s what’s going to happen.

It’s time for Syracuse basketball to really test themselves against the truly elite. Syracuse saw their four game winning streak snapped vs Georgia Tech on Saturday for their fifth overall loss on the season. Now they play the Duke Blue Devils on the road.

This is the good and bad news about playing in the ACC for Syracuse. On one hand Syracuse plays No. 1 Duke, arguably the best team in the entire country. The Blue Devils would be difficult enough to play in the lovely confines of the Carrier Dome, but this game is being played at Cameron Indoor.

So I told you the bad news, there is good news, well sort of. It’s opportunity. Syracuse shouldn’t take playing Duke (twice this season) for granted. That chance of playing Duke means that Syracuse always has a chance to get back into the March Madness conversation. Albeit a small chance.

Florida State vs. Pitt Basketball Fearless Prediction, Game Preview (CFN; Fiutak)

Broadcast
Date: Monday, January 14
Game Time: 7:00 ET
Venue: Petersen Events Center, Pittsburgh, PA
Network: ESPNU

What’s Going To Happen

– Florida State needs a breather. It had Duke dead, right up until it lost on a last-second three-pointer on Saturday. It got Virginiaed, putting up 52 points against the slow-and-go Cavaliers a week ago. Now at 1-2 in the ACC and with two road games in the next three, it needs this.

– Pitt has lost two of its last three and needed overtime to beat Louisville. Guard Trey McGowens has gone off over the last two weeks, but the Panther defense isn’t helping out the cause. With three road games in the next four, and the home game coming against Duke, the season could quickly slip away with a loss.

– FSU doesn’t shoot well, but it rebounds enough to get by. The Noles manage to get up for the big games and the find ways to win, but they also have a big, big problem giving the ball away. Pitt is fantastic at forcing mistakes, creating 17 takeaways a game. It has to get the offense moving and not let the game bog down.

Syracuse’s Candy Girl: One of the city’s greatest success stories (PS; Croyle)

Mary Elizabeth Evans was one of the greatest business people the city of Syracuse has ever produced.

In 1973, the New York Times described her as a “Horatio Alger heroine who helped lift her genteel family from poverty by making and selling candy.”

And it all started with a conversation with her Sunday School teacher.

She was born in Syracuse in 1884, into a family of prestige. Her maternal grandfather was Judge Henry Riegel, who was the longest serving judge in Onondaga County. The judge had many real estate investments in the area which made up for much of the family’s wealth.

The judge’s daughter, Fannie, married an Englishman, William Evans, who was a professor of voice at Syracuse University. Mary Elizabeth was the oldest of the couple’s four children.

A 1902 Syracuse Herald profile described Mary’s childhood this way:

“Mary Elizabeth began life as one of the fortunate babies who are born to comfort and luxury. She was reared in an atmosphere of culture and refinement, and never knew what it was to have a reasonable wish ungratified.”
