Welcome to National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day!

A simple combination of bread, cheese, and a little butter has become one of the greatest comfort foods ever created: the grilled cheese sandwich! Cheese and bread have been being combined since the ancient Romans, but it wasn't until the twentieth century that the grilled cheese sandwich began to take shape.

Two factors set the stage for the rise of grilled cheese: inexpensive processed cheese and sliced bread. James L. Kraft opened his first cheese plant in 1914 in Illinois. The following year he invented pasteurized cheese—cheap processed cheese that wouldn't spoil when it was being transported long distances. Shortly thereafter, in the late 1920s, sliced bread came on the market. The sandwiches made at this time often had names like "toasted cheese" and "melted cheese." Recipes had grated cheese with a binder such as salad dressing, white sauce, or mustard.

Syracuse Basketball: Jim Boeheim should coach another decade (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball head coach Jim Boeheim says he has no timeline for retirement and expects to coach for the foreseeable future.

When Mike Hopkins, Syracuse basketball’s coach-in-waiting, elected to take the top job at Washington about two years ago, and SU head coach Jim Boeheim remained at the helm of the Orange, it seemed natural to assume that Boeheim would roam the sidelines on the Hill until his son, freshman guard Buddy Boeheim, finished up his career with the ‘Cuse.

Not so fast.

In an interview with Syracuse.com at the recently concluded Final Four in Minneapolis, Jim Boeheim, who is 74 years old, denied an end-game or timeline for eventually riding off into the sunset. Buddy Boeheim may have three more terms with the Orange, but his father says he has no plans to retire.

Syracuse Basketball: NBA Draft stock for Tyus Battle, Oshae Brissett (itlh; Esden Jr)

Former Syracuse basketball stars Tyus Battle, Oshae Brissett are in the 2019 NBA Draft. Here is their latest draft stock via ESPN.

The Syracuse basketball team will be without some familiar faces next season. Tyus Battle has already sent his farewell letter and has signed with an agent. While Oshae Brissett has also entered the 2019 NBA Draft, but he can still pull out by the May 29th deadline.

Speaking of the 2019 NBA Draft, Jonathan Givony of ESPN dropped a full two-round mock draft that didn’t feature Battle or Oshae Brissett.

ACC Football Rx: MBB Rx: Better Basketball Regular Season (RX; HM)

I think we all agree that the NCAA Tournament is a great event, but there is a huge financial problem: most of the money ends up in the NCAA's pockets. So the ACC "earned" an extra $30 million or so from the NCAA Tournament this year. That's nice, but in perspective, that's about equal to the Orange Bowl by itself - and there were 7 ACC teams in the "Big Dance"!

Admittedly, college basketball does not generate as much money as college football. To some degree, that's just an inescapable fact. However, I would argue that any difference in the value of the two sports should be purely market-based. As it is, the NCAA is artificially capping the value of college basketball, even if that was never their intention.

The college basketball regular season has become virtually meaningless for all except the most ardent fans. Not that the games aren't fun - but the stakes just aren't very high, generally. When 68 teams get into the Big Dance (about half of those being at-large)... and when you know if you win the conference tournament it doesn't matter what you did in the regular season... how much drama is there in the regular season, really?

Compelling non-conference games aren't played very often either. Outside of a few preseason tournaments, non-conference rivalries, and made for TV events like the Big Ten/ACC challenge, there isn't a lot in the way of important games that draw eyeballs. This is true despite the fact that about 1/3 of the schedule is dedicated to non-conference games. So many games...so few that matter.

ACC Football Rx: MBB Links, news and rumors - 4/11/19 (RX; HM)

for Hoo's That

Matt Zemek wrote a series of articles about the UVA basketball championship. Even if you're not a Cavaliers' fan, you will be able to appreciate good writing when you read it. Here are some excerpts:

From Dean Smith would have smiled at Virginia’s championship
"Dean Smith equipped his players for the pros. The playing style might have felt like a restraint, but it impressed upon Carolina players the need to master the sport’s nuances and let individual excellence flow from understanding.
That ethos — albeit in a different package — is very much apparent in how Tony Bennett teaches basketball at Virginia."

Coach fundamentals.

From This Virginia championship contains widespread resonance in the ACC
"Other ACC schools can take heart and learn from what Virginia has done, so that they can find hope in the future."

Hope for the rest of the league.

From Virginia title reminds us why Maryland leaving the ACC remains such a loss
"Virginia’s 2019 national championship reminds us of what ACC fans used to have in 2002: Duke-Maryland epics, UNC-Maryland battles, UVA-Maryland street fights. It remains a great loss to not have Maryland in the ACC. That is where Maryland still belongs..."

Rivalries lost.

ACC conference predictions, proud pops, hometown heroes and more (streakingthelawn.com; Caron)

Alas, championship week is coming to an end, but that doesn’t mean the #content will. There’s still plenty to discuss after the Virginia Cavalierstook home the 2019 NCAA tournament title. First: get your gear. No celebration is complete without the commemorative swag. Second: brush up on your draft knowledge. You never know who might go! Third, relive the magic of Monday night one more time and say goodbye to the tired narratives that have inaccurately characterized Virginia basketball for too long.

And finally, check out what else is happening around the corner.

Way-too-early ACC power rankings for 2019-20: Virginia, again? (The Athletic) $$

The Athletic has your Virginia Cavaliers finishing on top of the conference again next year–with or without whoever may leave for the 2019 NBA draft. Even if Ty Jerome departs with De’Andre Hunter (which most think is a given at this point and they like to have some fun with that fact), Kyle Guy, Kihei Clark and Mamadi Diakite could still run the ACC.

Pizza shop with a Keto-friendly twist coming to former Mark’s Pizzeria spot in Clay (PS; Pucci)

Pizza is returning to the former Mark’s Pizzeria location on Oswego Road in the town of Clay.

But the big difference is what’s joining it at The Stop: A build-your-own salad bar, low-carb sandwiches that use cucumbers, red peppers and other vegetables in place of bread and eventually, cauliflower crust pizza.

Kevin Meaker and business partner Dave Cornell are opening The Stop and Meaker said the restaurant’s Keto-friendly options will help it stand out.

“It’s a different kind of pizza shop,” he said.

The Stop will still have all the traditional pizzeria favorites, like pizza, wings and subs. Meaker’s uncle ran the former First-N-Goal pizza shop in Cicero, where Meaker worked for around 10 years.

The pizza at The Stop is based on Meaker’s great-grandmother’s recipe. It’ll have a thicker crust and be cut into squares, similar to the “West Side” style popularized at other CNY restaurants like Twin Trees and Daniella’s.
