Welcome to Jackie Robinson Day!

Jackie Robinson Day is a traditional event which occurs annually in Major League Baseball, commemorating and honoring the day Jackie Robinson made his major league debut. April 15 was Opening Day in 1947, Robinson's first season in the Major Leagues. Initiated for the first time on April 15, 2004, Jackie Robinson Day is celebrated each year on that day. The festivity is a result of Robinson's memorable career, best known for becoming the first black major league baseball player of the modern era in 1947.[1][2] His debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers (today known as the Los Angeles Dodgers) ended approximately 80 years of baseball segregation, also known as the baseball color line, or color barrier.[2] He also was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962, remembered for his services with the number 42 jersey.[2]

Syracuse’s Best Moments in Years of the Tiger – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Raucci)

“The Return to Glory”

Believe it or not, that’s not what was said when Syracuse football capped its off its first 10-win season since 2001 in December with a win over West Virginia in the Camping World Bowl.

It was said, however, when Eldrick Tont Woods sank a bogey putt on the 18th hole at Augusta National to win his fifth green jacket on Sunday. The putt capped off one of the most storied individual comebacks in sports history and returned one of the greatest golfers of all-time to the pinnacle of the sport for the first time in 14 years. It could go down as the best sports moment of the year as a lot of Tiger’s Masters wins have.

So that got us wondering, in the years that Tiger has captivated Augusta, GA, what moments have left Syracuse fans captivated? Let’s turn back the clock and then do a little look ahead at Syracuse athletics in the years of the Tiger.

National Championship Third-Least Watched in Past Decade (sportsmediawatch.com; Paulsen)

It was no ratings disaster, but Virginia-Texas Tech still ended up as one of the lowest rated NCAA Tournament title games.

Monday’s Virginia-Texas Tech NCAA Tournament national championship earned an 11.6 rating and 19.63 million viewers on CBS, up 26% in ratings and 23% in viewership from Villanova-Michigan on TBS, TNT and TruTV last year (9.2, 15.97M), but down 12% and 15% respectively from North Carolina-Gonzaga on CBS in 2017 (13.2, 23.00M).

Ratings and viewership were the third-lowest for the national championship since 2009, when North Carolina-Michigan State had a 10.8 and 17.65 million. Only the two title games on cable — Villanova-Michigan last year and Villanova-North Carolina in 2016 (10.6, 17.75M) — have earned lower numbers over that span.

The Cavaliers’ overtime win, which peaked with 23.5 million viewers from 11:30-11:45 PM ET, ranks as the sixth-lowest rated and ninth-least watched national championship on record (dates back to 1975).

New movie filming in Syracuse area seeks waterfront home to be star (PS; Herbert)

Could your house be the next star of a Hollywood movie?
Producers for a new major motion picture shooting in the Syracuse area are seeking a waterfront home to be the star of the upcoming “The Night House." A local house is needed for filming scenes from May through June, and must fit the following criteria:

  • 2 story
  • Built in the last 15 years
  • Wooden
  • 1500 sq ft or more
  • Along a waterfront property
  • Should feel remote, free at most angles from neighboring houses
  • Unique architectural qualities
If interested, homeowners should contact thenighthousefilm@gmail.com. Homeowners will be paid a “substantial monthly rental and relocation fee” so they can stay in a hotel while making money renting out their home.
