Welcome to National Crayola Day!

Crayola crayons were invented by cousins Edwin Binney and C. Harold Smith, who had formed Binney & Smith in 1885 (interestingly, National Crayon Day, which took place last month, is held on the anniversary of the founding of their company). The cousins made shoe polish and printing ink, and in 1900 began making slate pencils. They mixed pigments and paraffin wax to create a crayon that was used to mark crates and barrels. These crayons were too toxic for children, and they began researching what materials they could use that would be safe.

Syracuse vs. Georgetown rivalry renewed for four years (SI; Shapiro)

One of college basketball's most historic rivalries is ensured for four more years, as Syracuse and Georgetown have signed on for a four-year series starting in 2019–20, the schools announced.

Georgetown will host the first matchup at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. The first game at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse will take place during the 2020–21 season.

The two programs were Big East heavyweights from the 1980s until Syracuse's departure to the ACC in 2013, though the rivals have played in each of the last four seasons. The Orange hold the all-time head-to-head advantage 51–41.

Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim will be in his 44th season with the Orange in 2019–20. Syracuse reached the NCAA tournament at 20–24 in 2018–19.

Georgetown missed the NCAA tournament at 19–14 in 2018-19. Former Hoyas center Patrick Ewing has been the program's head coach since April 2017. Ewing is 34–29 in two seasons at Georgetown.

The ACC And The NBA Draft (DBR; Jacobs)

The door has closed.

Players seeking to be considered in the June 20 NBA draft have now made themselves available for selection. Among them are 23 freshmen, sophomores and juniors who appeared for at least one season at ACC schools.

Duke leads the way with five. Rising seniors Marques Bolden and Javin DeLaurier presumably seek an objective analysis of their strengths and weaknesses, while freshmen RJ Barrett, Cam Reddish and Zion Williamson are certain to be selected.

Rendering early predictions about the 2019-20 college season highly suspect, 11 ACC teams, nearly three-quarters of league members (73.3 percent), potentially could lose at least one prominent player with eligibility remaining – BC (1), Duke (5), FSU (1), Georgia Tech (1), Louisville (3), UNC (2), NC State (1), Syracuse (2), Virginia (4), Virginia Tech (2) and Wake Forest (1).

Players have a little more than a month (until May 29) to decide whether they care to remain members of the NCAA programs they signed with as freshmen. Or they can take their chances on inclusion among the 30 players taken in the first round, where the money is, or choose the more tenuous route of seeking to stick as second-rounders or free agents.

Syracuse's New Game in Town | JPMorgan Chase & Co. (jpmorganchase.com)

Syracuse's New Game in Town

With a deep bench of talent and a $3 million investment from JPMorgan Chase, Syracuse just might become the next Silicon Valley.

When you think of Syracuse, the color orange likely comes to mind. After all, the Orangemen: Syracuse University’s basketball team is considered one of the most prestigious college teams in the country.

But what about industry? It got its start with salt mining in the 1800’s, but by the 1900s, it was swept up in the manufacturing boom. Home to major operations from some of the country’s biggest companies—including Smith Corona, Chrysler and GM—it is probably best known for its connection to GE, which built its main television manufacturing plant there. But by the 21st century, manufacturing was declining and it was unclear what the future held for the “Salt City.”

For many of the city’s leaders, the logical next step is technology. Between its rich manufacturing history and its association with one of the country’s top research universities, it’s poised to be a major tech hub. And, thanks to a host of recent investments in the city’s technology corridor and “Tech Garden” incubator, the path is primed and ready.

But if there’s one thing Syracusans have learned over the years, it’s that, when it comes to economic growth, practice makes perfect.

While economic growth and advancement are essential to take the city to the next level, that progress should not be detrimental to existing residents. The new investments have energized the city and created momentum to develop a growth strategy that ensures all residents benefit from the region’s growing economy. Responsible growth is the new game in town.

To achieve this lofty goal, Syracuse Surge, an economic development initiative led by the city in collaboration with the business community, local nonprofits, and educational institutions, is developing programs to connect underserved residents with the tools and training they will need to benefit from—and contribute to—the technology boom.
