Welcome to National Ballpoint Pen Day!

The evolution of writing implement technology is a continuous and subtle one. Lewis Waterman opened up the possibility of portable pens with his invention of a practical fountain pen in 1884. But relatively quickly, users began working on a version that would be less likely to smudge ink everywhere, leading to the development of the modern ballpoint pen.

Independently, inventors around the world began developing the ball-and-socket technology—an American banker named John L. Loud received a patent on a less-than-perfect version as early as 1888—but generally, it's Hungarian brothers László and György Bíró who are credited with inventing the pen we still use today.

László, who is most often credited with the invention, was a journalist who theorized that by using newspaper ink in pens he could eliminate the characteristic smudging of fountain pens. Starting in the 1930s, he began experimenting with using the ink in fountain pens, but found that it was too thick to flow readily. His chemist brother, György, helped him perfect the ball-and-socket technology, and in 1938, László Bíró signed a deal with his early backer and business partner, Andor Goy, to produce and sell the pens in Hungary.

How Syracuse recruit and Netherlands native Jesse Edwards discovered basketball through LeBron James videos (PS; Waters)

Growing up in the Netherlands, Jesse Edwards played soccer and competed in track and field.

When he was 13 years old, Edwards cleared a height of 6-feet, 1-inch to finish second in a national high-jumping competition.

He had never played basketball.

Then, his older brother, Kai, started watching LeBron James videos on the Internet.

“He started watching LeBron James,’’ Edwards, an Amsterdam native, said. “That’s his favorite player. He was watching his videos and got into it and then we all got into it and didn’t stop.’’

Kai and Jesse joined a local club where they could play basketball. For Jesse, the game was just a fun diversion. Then, he started growing.

“When I was 16, I stepped it up,’’ he said. “That’s when I really started training.’’

Three years later, Jesse Edwards now stands 6-foot-11 and a freshman at Syracuse University.

“I’m quite new at the game,’’ Edwards said. “There’s a lot of things I can still work on. There’s a lot of room to get better.’’

Edwards talked about his path to Syracuse last week following a workout with Syracuse assistant Allen Griffin at the Carmelo K. Anthony Basketball Center.

The native of the Netherlands committed to Syracuse in March and arrived on campus two weeks ago. He is perhaps the most intriguing member of Syracuse’s five-player recruiting class.

Syracuse Basketball: Eric Devendorf is “the spinal cord” of Boeheim’s Army (itlh; Esden Jr)

Former Syracuse basketball star Eric Devendorf is the heart and soul of Boeheim’s Army. Here are the details on how all that came to be.

While Boeheim’s Army continues to find more foot soldiers for their 2019 TBT Championship chase, there is still one that remains and has always been there and will always be there: Eric Devendorf.

The Basketball Tournament was founded back in 2014, Boeheim’s Army came into existence in 2015.

Only one player has been on every different version of Boeheim’s Army and that’s Eric Devendorf. General manager Kevin Belbey joined The Manchild Show with Boy Green to talk about what Eric has meant to the team both on and off the court:

“Eric Devendorf is the heart, the soul, the spinal cord, the blood, the oxygen, and every cliche you can think of. He has driven our team for the last four years on and off the court. He has really matured as a person and as a player and he still has a lot of game left. Eric is someone guys just love to play with because of how good he is and his natural leadership. It has been really helpful to have him being that consistent guy I can lean on. He has been with the team every Summer, he’s the only player that has been on every version of the team and like I said he still has it. Devo scored 19 points in the Sweet 16 of The Basketball Tournament last year and I’m looking forward to what he’ll do this Summer.”
Devendorf has always found ways to score on the court, but he has really started to score off the court. Kevin revealed that the lone non-Syracuse alum on the team this season (Jordan Crawford) was recruited by Devo.

Players love competing with him because he’s the ultimate competitor and the best teammate you could hope for. Plus he’s got a warm personality that is magnetic and people like being around him.

ACC Basketball: Top 15 impacts players in 2019 recruiting class (bustingbrackets.com; Anderson)

ACC Basketball is set for yet another exciting class of freshmen to take center stage. Here’s a look at the top 15 players in the 2019 recruiting class.
The 2019 recruiting classes for ACC Basketball have shaped up to be yet again to deliver another exciting season. The Virginia Cavaliers took home the national title and look to reload on the recruiting trail while the bluebloods look to repeat last year’s success and then some. Last season, the Duke Blue Devils stole the show with their trio of Zion Williamson, R.J. Barrett, and Cam Reddish. In 2019-20, they’ve got another slew of recruits on the way set to take the stage.

The 2019 recruiting classes in the ACC are stacked more than ever, especially the Blue Devils. The Blue Devils have four freshmen incoming and all of them are ranked in the top-50 of the class. They aren’t the only ones bringing the heat, either. The Louisville Cardinals have a total of six players coming in their 2019 recruiting class, including the return of Steven Enoch and Jordan Nwora.

The North Carolina Tar Heels have a group of freshman coming in as well that will look to gel right away with a few graduate transfers as well. Things will look a whole lot different in the ACC basketball ranks this upcoming season, that’s for sure. Duke may take on a lot of the hype but the rest of the conference has hit the recruiting trail hard as well. Here’s a look at the top 15 ACC players in the 2019 recruiting class.

No Syracuse sports bets for you: NY to bar wagers on in-state schools (newyorkupstate.com; Cazentre)

In Pennsylvania, where sports betting became legal last fall, bettors can place a wager on in-state schools Penn State to win the Rose Bowl or Villanova to win its conference championship.

But in New Jersey, which approved sports bets last summer, gamblers can’t put money on an in-state school like Seton Hall making the Final Four or on flagship state university Rutgers to beat ... anyone.

In other words, the rules for betting on your home-state college team in the new world of legal sports gambling depend on where you live.

What about New York, which is poised to allow limited legal sports betting this summer?

As things stand today, no bet would be allowed in New York on any event involving a New York college team, no matter where the game is played. And you couldn’t bet on any collegiate event taking place in the state. Bets would be allowed on non-New York collegiate events and on almost all forms of pro sports.

That means you can’t take Syracuse to beat Duke in basketball at the Carrier Dome (or at Cameron Indoor Stadium.) You can’t bet on Cornell winning the Ivy League football title. You can’t put a wager on Onondaga Community College’s chances of winning its fourth straight national men’s lacrosse championship.
