Welcome to Sewing Machine Day!

Sewing machines, which are celebrated today, are used to stitch material like cloth or leather. They are usually powered by electricity, but many are still powered by a treadle, just as many early machines were. Their basic design has remained over the years, consisting of a needle, and a shuttle to carry thread. First being used in factories, they were a symbol of the industrial revolution, marking the shift from handmade to automated production. They also became important for home use. Women once spent much time sewing by hand, and the invention of the sewing machine helped free up a lot of this time.
Thomas Saint of England took out the first patent for a complete sewing machine. He was given patent #1764 in 1790. Some sources say that he received his patent on June 13, explaining why Sewing Machine Day takes when it does. The machine was to have an awl that punched a hole, and then a needle that would go through the hole. It is unknown if Saint created a prototype of his sewing machine, and only the drawings of it survive.

https://sujuiceonline.com/2019/06/12/2019-nba-draft-profile-syracuse-forward-oshae-brissett/ (the juice; Cheng)

The NBA Draft is in June, and Syracuse has two players that will potentially get drafted. Today, we take a look at forward Oshae Brissett, who was Syracuse’s leading rebounder at 7.5 rebounds per game.

Here is The Juice Online’s scouting report on Brissett:
Strengths: Dogged rebounder with excellent explosiveness on second and third jumps… Above average athleticism and motor… Consistently gets to the free throw line… Can create his own shot off the dribble… Has potential to be a three level scorer… Has size and strength to finish inside.
Weaknesses: Shooting took a nosedive from freshman to sophomore year… 3-point percentage dipped six points to 27 percent and free throw percentage dipped 12 points to 66 percent… Struggled to finish inside… Played wildly at times on offense… Struggled with shot selection… Disappeared offensively for long stretches.

NBA Comparison: Wilson Chandler. Though Chandler was more of an athletic specimen, he and Brissett shared a lot of characteristics at the same age. Chandler’s shot was still developing out of DePaul, and though he shot just 30 percent from beyond the arc in his first season with the Knicks, by his seventh season, he shot over 40 percent. Chandler also was in the process of working on being able to take players off the dribble, something that Brissett showed flashes of at times in his sophomore year. At the same time, no one doubted Chandler’s rebounding prowess, much in the same way that Brissett has a high motor at the glass.

Former Syracuse basketball guard Frank Howard is preparing for the 2019 NBA Draft. Here’s what drives him everyday to be the best he can possibly be.

After four years of ball at with the Syracuse basketball squad, Frank Howard is now putting all of his time and energy into his preparation for the 2019 NBA Draft.
Things have been relatively quiet throughout the offseason process for Howard. He worked out for his hometown Washington Wizards last week and in the workout was hoping to “show his competitiveness and be a dog out there on both ends of the floor.”

While this week he was also with the Sacramento Kings working out at their facilities.
For what it’s worth:

  • Washington Wizards
    • The squad only owns one pick in the 2019 NBA Draft and that’s ninth overall. It would be quite the surprise if Howard was taken in the top-10 of the draft. So in other words if Washington wants Howard, they’ll have to hope he goes undrafted.
  • Sacramento Kings
    • On a more realistic basis, the Kings own three second round picks (40th, 47th, and 60th) and realistically could take Howard at any number of these spots or like the Wizards could attempt to lure him as a priority free agent following the draft.
These are the only reported workouts that Howard has participated in.

Syracuse Basketball: Joe Girard wins Male High School Athlete of the Year (itlh; Esden Jr)

Syracuse basketball signee Joe Girard has won the Male High School Athlete of the Year. Here are all the details and the elite company he has joined.
Patrick Mahomes, Kyler Murray, Lonzo Ball, and Joe Girard. What do all of these people have in common?

They’re all past winners of the Male High School Athlete of the Year award from Max Preps.

JG3 is the latest player to join that exclusive club in 2018-19. It is one of several accolades he achieved during his incredible high school career including but not limited too:

  • Two-time New York Gatorade Player of the Year.
  • Two-time MaxPreps All-American.
  • A two-time football state champion.
  • On top of being a basketball state champion.

JG3 is a superb athlete that has dominated whatever sport he has chosen to play.
He played quarterback and led the Indians to their second state title in three years.
Despite all the gridiron success, he will not get the chance to play for Dino Babers in the loud house. Instead, he’ll dedicate himself to Jim Boeheim and the Syracuse basketball squad.

Although several schools recruited him for both sports including Penn State, Tulane, and UMass. JG3 says for now my sole focus is hoops, but “I can’t speak for what the future holds.”

Offseason Report: Jesse Edwards (247sports.com; McAllister)

One of five incoming freshmen for Syracuse basketball, Jesse Edwards has perhaps the most unique recruiting story. A native of the Netherlands, Edwards did not start playing basketball until age 16. He came to the United States last December, enrolling at IMG Academy. From there, multiple power conference schools expressed interest, including Syracuse.

After an official visit to Georgia Tech and Syracuse, Edwards knew the Orange was the right fit. Now, he joins a Syracuse roster that has lost its starting center and has an opportunity for significant immediate playing time.

2018-19 ROLE

Jesse Edwards is an incoming true freshman, and therefore did not play for the Orange last season. As such, he did not have a role on the team.

2018-19 STATS

Points: 10.0
Rebounds: 6.2

Blocks: 1.0
FG%: 56%

The above stats were Edwards' from his time at IMG Academy last season.

Syracuse University basketball coach Jim Boeheim and his wife Juli donated four passenger vans to the Boys & Girls Club of Syracuse Wednesday afternoon.

The club will receive brand new 2019 Ford vans, with the total cost exceeding $220,000.
The Jim & Juli Boeheim Foundation partnered with NYE Auto Group in Oneida and received a personal donation from Ashley Palm to help with the expense.

This donation is a part of an initiative with the foundation to help transport kids all around the city. Boeheim hopes with easier access to transportation, more young kids will stay out of trouble.
“You want to give young kids pride in what they’re doing, and I think this can show that. Well, we can do this. We can accomplish things," Boeheim said.
Palm says that “This donation is made in my mom’s honor through the things she felt strongly about, and the Boys & Girls Club was one of those things.”

New owner brings upgrades to Movie Tavern at Township 5 (PS; Tampone)

Township 5′s Movie Tavern got a new corporate owner earlier this year and the deal brought some upgrades.

Two of the theaters at Movie Tavern got upgraded sound systems to go with existing large format screens and seats that can fully recline. The upgrades were finished in April, according to Marcus Theatres, which acquired the whole Movie Tavern chain in February.
The companies announced the deal in late 2018.

Marcus Theatres is owned by Marcus Corp., a public company headquartered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The chain offers in-theater dining, just like Movie Tavern, but it's located mainly in the Midwest and West.

Marcus Corp. also owns a number of hotels and restaurants.

The company is retaining the Movie Tavern name.

Along with the theater upgrades, Marcus is bringing some popular items from its own menu to Movie Tavern sites, the company said. Additions include thin crust pizzas, double smash burgers, several new salads, including the Southwest BBQ Crispy Chicken, and new entrees, including steak and shrimp.
