Welcome to International Panic Day!

The word panic is derived from the ancient Greek word Pan. Pan was the Greek god of shepherds, woods, and pastures, and when he would awake from a nap he would let out a yell that caused flocks to stampede. Greek authors coined the word “panikon” from this, which meant “sudden fear”. Panic is “a sudden sensation of fear, which is so strong as to dominate or prevent reason or logical thinking, replacing it with an animalistic fight-or-flight reaction.” Panic can happen in an individual or it can happen in large groups. It is not healthy for people to be in a constant panic, as stress levels are raised which can be detrimental to health. This day is dedicated to this sensation of panicking.

International Panic Day is being observed today! It has always been observed annually on June 18th.

https://www.syracuse.com/orangebasketball/2019/06/syracuses-adrian-autry-hopes-he-opened-some-eyes-as-head-coach-of-usa-east-coast.html (PS; Waters)

His USA East Coast team tied with the Greek Under-19 National team with 4 seconds remaining, Adrian Autry called a timeout to set up a final play.

It was the first time that Autry, Syracuse University’s associate head coach, had ever been the head coach of a collegiate-level team. He had accepted the gig with USA East Coast to gain just this kind of experience; calling timeouts in key situations and devising a way to get a game-winning basket.

“It was awesome,’’ Autry said of the moment. “It was exciting.’’

Autry drew up a simple inbounds play designed to get the ball to Louisiana Tech guard Amorie Archibald.
“When you get to the last seconds, it’s not always the play, it’s who you want having the ball,’’ Autry said. “The kid from Louisiana Tech had been playing really well. I liked the matchup that he had.’’

Autry knew the Greek National team would defend the inbounds play aggressively. The first thing he did was tab Syracuse guard Jalen Carey to inbound the ball.

“I knew they would over-play everything,’’ Autry said. “I wanted to make sure I had a guard who could deliver the pass.’’

Then he instructed Archibald on how to get open.

“I wanted to play off their aggressiveness,’’ Autry said. “The action was to start toward the ball, stop and break it off. He’d have an advantage going to the basket.’’

The play worked to perfection. Archibald started toward Carey and then cut to his left. Carey passed the ball to Archibald, who had a slight edge on his defender as he drove baseline.

The Greek player committed a foul and Archibald drained two free throws with 3 seconds left to give USA East Coast a 63-61 victory.

The team of college players completed their trip to Greece with a 3-0 record with the win on Saturday.

Syracuse Basketball: Tyus Battle, Oshae Brissett NBA Draft stock is grim (itlh; Esden Jr)

Several anonymous NBA scouts shared their insight on former Syracuse basketball players Tyus Battle and Oshae Brissett. Here are the details.

The moment we’ve all been waiting for finally arrives this week, the 2019 NBA Draft.
Two former Syracuse basketball players, in particular, are hoping to hear their name called in Tyus Battle and Oshae Brissett.

Both players decided to forgo their remaining collegiate eligibility for an opportunity to be paid for their talents. Tyus spent three years at Syracuse and Oshae was on the hill for two seasons.
The perceived NBA Draft stock of both players has been fluid throughout this process. But as the draft approaches this Thursday, things are becoming more clear.
Several anonymous NBA scouts provided their unfiltered take to The Athletic’s Seth Davis on the futures of both Battle and Brissett:

On Tyus Battle:

“I’m not a big fan. I don’t know what he does at a high level. He’s an average shooter, average athlete, average playmaker. He’s a decent finisher but, he’ll have to become a three-and-D guy. His shooting range definitely has to improve. Despite the fact that he played at Syracuse, he could be a really, really good defender. Probably somewhere in the second round, or he could go undrafted.”
On Oshae Brissett:
“Little surprising he decided to come out. For a long time, I’ve been dying to like him, but he just never gets anything done. He never makes a shot. Turns the ball over. When I saw him during the season he looked awful, but he was better in Chicago at the combine. He has some nice athleticism off the bounce. I liked him as a freshman and then last summer he got in this mode where he was trying to show he’s a 3-man, and he’s really not. I felt like he underachieved at Syracuse.”
Under the shroud of anonymity, people are more willing to say things. Some of these criticisms are fair and warranted, but some of it seems over the top.
The other part of anonymity is the absence of accountability. If either Tyus or Oshae rises above these criticisms, there will be no one to take the heat for these incognito takes.
Although currently, the expectation among experts is that no Syracuse basketball player will be selected on Thursday night in either the first or second round (60 total picks in the draft).

Boston College lands former Duke guard Derryck Thornton as a transfer - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)

According to a report from Jon Rothstein, Boston College has landed graduate transfer point guard Derryck Thornton.

A former 5-star recruit, Thornton arrives in Chestnut Hill after three years at Southern Cal. ACC fans, however, will likely recognize his time from his one season at Duke (2015-16). That one-year run in Durham, while teamed up with future NBA players Brandon Ingram and Grayson Allen, didn’t go so great, though.

Thornton visited Boston College about four weeks ago — in the middle of May.

During two seasons with USC, Thornton played in 57 games (28 starts), but struggled with his shot (41.4 eFG%) and battled turnovers (3.2 per 40 minutes). In the 2018-19 season, Thornton scored just 0.58 points per possession out of the pick-and-roll (30.3 FG%, 31.5 eFG%), according to Synergy Sports. For the Eagles, Thornton must cutdown on his turnovers and find ways to connect on more jump shots.

With the departure of Ky Bowman to the 2019 NBA Draft, Thornton will team up in the BC backcourt next to promising sophomore guard Wynston Tabbs.

Ballpark Beer Fest: Syracuse Mets showcase hard-to-find brews (PS; Cazentre)

This season so far has brought big-time major league stars like Robinson Cano, Matt Kemp and Brandon Nimmo to the minor league baseball park in Syracuse.

For craft beer fans, this is the equivalent: The Alchemist of Stowe, Vt.; Bissell Brothers of Portland, Maine; and Big Alice of Queens will be among the breweries pouring beers Friday at the Ball Park Craft Beer Fest at NBT Bank Stadium.
The Syracuse Mets have moved their annual craft brew bash to an off-night in mid-season (instead of the usual September date), and they’re loading it up with beers that are not regularly sold in the Central New York market.

Other out-of-market offerings at the fest include Jackie O’s of Athens, Ohio; Newburgh Brewing of the Hudson Valley and Aurora Ale & Lager of the Finger Lakes.

They are among the 70-plus breweries that will offer more than 120 different brews at the fest. Full brewery list.
In addition to beer sampling on the main concourse, the fest features food from local restaurants, a chance for fans to take batting practice on the field and compete in a hitting contest. The evening ends with a fireworks display.
