Welcome to American Eagle Day!

The bald eagle is the national symbol and emblem of the United States, as well as the country's national bird. It also is on the obverse side of the Great Seal of the United States. Today we celebrate the bald eagle, on the anniversary of the day in 1782 when the seal bearing its image became official. Besides being celebrated for being on the Great Seal and for being the country's symbol and national bird, the eagle is celebrated today for its recovery after almost becoming extinct, for the values and ideals it has come to represent, and for its importance to American folklore and society.

In 1776, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson were tasked with creating a seal for the newly formed country. Their design was not accepted by Congress, and a few other committees were formed over the next few years where various people worked on designing the seal. Finally, after six years, a design was approved and became official on June 20, 1782.

The 2019 NBA draft could be a rather low-key event for Syracuse fans.

Syracuse teammates Tyus Battle and Oshae Brissett find themselves on the fringe of the two-round, 60-pick draft.

Neither is currently projected to be taken in the draft, which will be held on Thursday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, but both remain in conversations as potential picks in the latter portion of the second round.

Should neither Battle or Brissett get drafted, it would mark the first time in 20 years that Syracuse will have gone two consecutive years without a player being picked.

In the 2000 NBA draft, the Dallas Mavericks took Syracuse center Etan Thomas with the 12th overall pick. In the second round of that year’s draft, the Milwaukee Bucks tabbed Syracuse guard with the No. 49 pick.

Those two selections snapped a three-year drought in which no Syracuse player was taken in the NBA draft.

There is a chance that Battle and Brissett could hear their names called on Thursday night.

Brissett is currently listed at No. 60 on TheAthletic.com writer Sam Vecenie’s Big Board. Battle is No. 72 on Vecenie’s Big Board.

Both players have worked out for numerous NBA teams since taking part in the G-League Elite combine in Chicago in May. Brissett earned an invite to the NBA’s Combine with his performance in the G-League event.

Syracuse going two straight years without a draft pick; provided Battle and Brissett aren’t drafted, would reverse a recent trend of former Orange players getting drafted nearly every year.

Syracuse had a player get taken in the NBA draft in 10 out of 11 years from 2007 to 2017. Syracuse had at least one first-round pick for six consecutive years, starting in 2012 and ending in 2017.

If you look around the Syracuse basketball locker room, there are not a ton of familiar names left.

Paschal Chukwu and Frank Howard graduated. Tyus Battle left for the NBA draft, somewhat surprisingly followed by Oshae Brissett. Suddenly, Elijah Hughes finds himself as the lone returning starter on for a completely turned over Syracuse men’s basketball program.

Coming into the 2018-19 season, Hughes was a relative unknown to the Orange faithful. He sat out the previous year after transferring from East Carolina. He was far from polished during his only season with the Pirates, but improved as the year went on.

For much of his first season in Central New York, he was relegated to a role player, mostly operating as a tertiary ball handler and spot up shooter. Among starters, he had the third highest usage rating, trailing Battle and Brissett.

Make no mistake, this is Elijah Hughes’ team now. That might be a very good thing for Syracuse. He has already shown the ability to take over games.

He posted a double-double vs. Notre Dame, dropped 22 points on Miami and stepped up with 25 points against Baylor.

Darius Bazley didn’t play at Syracuse University this past season.

The 6-foot-9 forward out of Cincinnati, Ohio, had committed to Syracuse, but one day after playing in the 2018 McDonald’s All-America game, he announced his intention to spend the 2018-19 season in the NBA’s G-League.

Then Bazley’s plans changed again. Clearly not ready for pro ball, he signed with Rich Paul’s Klutch Sports agency. His new advisors kept him out of the G-League, deciding that he would work out on his own in preparation for the 2019 NBA draft.

In the meantime, he received $1 million as an intern for New Balance.

Now, with the NBA draft set for this Thursday, the question remains: Did Darius Bazley’s decision to spurn Syracuse specifically and college basketball in general for a one-year internship pay off? Or did Bazley hurt his draft stock as well as his earning potential?

“Everything is so hard to say with Darius,’’ Sam Vecenie, NBA draft analyst for The Athletic, said. “His situation has been so shrouded for a while now.’’

A year ago, ESPN.com’s projections for the 2019 NBA draft had Bazley being selected with 18th overall pick.

In ESPN’s most recent mock of the 2019 draft, Bazley is slotted as the No. 29 pick, going to the San Antonio. That’s the highest pick for him of the major mock drafts. The Sporting News also has him at No. 29, while SI.com puts him at No. 35 and NBADraft.net has him at No. 37.

Whichever player is taken with the No. 18 pick in Thursday’s draft will receive a total of $6.6 million over the next three years, according the NBA’s rookie salary scale.

Comparatively, the No. 29 pick will earn $4.4 million in his first three years. The No. 37 pick will earn about $2 million in two years with no guaranteed money in third year of his contract.

Tom Cruise might really fight Justin Bieber, UFC president says (PS; Herbert)

A Tom Cruise-Justin Bieber fight might really happen, according to UFC president Dana White.
The 25-year-old singer challenged the 56-year-old actor to an MMA fight on Twitter last week: “I wanna challenge Tom Cruise to fight in the octagon. Tom if you dont take this fight your scared and you will never live it down. Who is willing to put on the fight? @danawhite?”

Bieber later said he was kidding, but White tells TMZ Sports that some “real guys” connected to both Cruise and Bieber say they both “really wanna do this fight and they believe that Tom Cruise would do the fight.”

“I told them that if that’s true -- and everybody involved really wants to do it -- we can talk,” White said. “I’d be an IDIOT not to make this fight!”

According to TMZ, Bieber has previously trained with boxing legend Floyd Mayweather, who once said the Biebs had enough talent to potentially make it as a fighter. He’s also two inches taller than Cruise and 31 years younger.

But Cruise wrestled in high school and remains fit, still performing his own crazy stunts in movies like “Mission: Impossible" and “Jack Reacher.”

Tough to decide who I'd like to see lose in a Cruise/Bieber fight. Maybe a draw with both being carried out of the ring.

Well, Tom was born in Syracuse, so there’s that. Bieber is a flat out jackass.
