Welcome to Color TV Day!

On today's date in 1951, at 4:35 p.m. Eastern Time, CBS made what is regarded as the first color television broadcast. It was an hour-long variety show called Premiere, which featured Arthur Godfrey, Ed Sullivan, Garry Moore, Robert Alda, and Faye Emerson. The chairman of the FCC and both the president and board chairman of CBS also appeared on it. The program was transmitted from CBS's New York City studio to the city, as well as to Boston, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and Philadelphia. Only televisions built for color could pick up the transmission, so most people—those with black-and-white sets—who were tuned to CBS just saw a blank screen. Most of those who were able to view the program saw it at a hotel, in department stores, or in an auditorium. Because of this groundbreaking broadcast, today is known as Color TV Day.

On August 24, 1944, General Electric executives came to a dinner at Syracuse's Hotel Syracuse, and, in the Imperial Ballroom, announced they;d be building a big new facility just north of the City of Syracuse.

The 155 acre site, named Electronics Park, was farm and forest land near the under-construction State Thruway. Grading and clearing began in October, but was stopped two weeks later by an early winter blizzard.
The first building, the powerhouse, went up in 1946 and first television set production started in 1958. In the early 1950s, picture tube production was relocated to the Liverpool complex from Buffalo, which meant TV sets were completely produced at Electronics Park.

GE could not keep up with demand for television sets: assembly lines were turning out 120 an hour, and the company had estimated it would need a work force of about six thousand. Instead they went to a 3-shift, 24x7 operation that saw 20,000 workers in the peak years.

Former Syracuse basketball player Baye Keita will renovate court on return to Senegal (PS; Waters)

In 2009, Baye Moussa Keita left his home in Saint Louis, Senegal, to come to the United States.
He hasn’t been back to see his family since.

Now, the former Syracuse University basketball player is headed back to his home, and he’s hoping to leave a lasting impression.
Keita, who played at Syracuse from 2010-2014 after spending one year at Oak Hill Academy, will return to Saint Louis this July and plans to restore the outdoor court where he first played the game of basketball.

“I decided that I wanted to give back since I haven’t been there in a while,’’ Keita said. “The court is in really bad shape. We’re going to do a clean-up and try to fix the backboards and the rims.’’
Keita’s trip to Senegal is a personal venture, but it dovetails with his current job. For the past two years, he has worked in the NBA’s International Basketball Operations department.
After working on the court for a day, Keita will hold a basketball camp for children in his hometown.
In addition to cleaning up the court and fixing the baskets, Keita plans to take 10-to-15 basketballs, T-shirts, socks and several size-15 sneakers to hand out. He is also bringing new nets.
Keita estimated he will need about $3,800 for his project. He has started a GoFundMe account to help with the costs.

Brandon Triche injures leg in Italy, still plans to play for Boeheim’s Army (PS; Ditota)

Brandon Triche has a bone bruise.

The former Syracuse and Jamesville-DeWitt guard sustained the injury during the first game of the Italian Serie A2 championship series. He said he “chipped a bone” in his right fibula (near his knee) about three minutes into that pivotal series. He missed the last two contests. His Capo d’Orlando team was subsequently swept 3-0 in the series.
That championship series loss deprived CdO of the right to advance to the A1 league - Italy’s best division - and sent De Longhi Treviso instead.

Triche returned to the United States last week and stayed a couple nights in New York with Boeheim’s Army general manager Kevin Belbey before heading home to Syracuse. He has been prohibited from running and jumping for about three weeks while the bone heals and an MRI confirms its repair.
Since he has been home, he has been visiting a sauna twice a day to stretch and maintain his core strength. Working out in the sauna, he said, allows him to build a sweat and maintain his weight. He expects to start swimming within the next week. He also expects to play for Boeheim’s Army when The Basketball Tournament begins next month.

Syracuse Basketball: Fantasy NBA Draft featuring SU legends (itlh; Lee)

With the NBA Draft in the books, let’s have some fun. We decided to do a fantasy draft with Syracuse basketball legends. Here’s how it turned out.

Syracuse basketball over the past decade has ended up with its fair share of high picks in the NBA Draft. Although for the first time since 1999, SU went back-to-back NBA Drafts without having a player selected.

Shortly following the draft both Tyus Battle and Oshae Brissett signed undrafted free agent deals with NBA teams. Tyus stayed in the north with the Minnesota Timberwolves. While Oshae went west to join the Los Angeles Clippers.

With the NBA Draft over, we decided to have some fun with a fantasy draft featuring the best Syracuse basketball players to ever put on an Orange uniform. Two writers for our site (Site Expert Paul A. Esden Jr and I) will alternate selections with a player pool consisting of the best SU players in history.

Both of us will draft a roster of six men, five starters and a utility player. There will be no position designations and all of these players will be drafted as the best versions of themselves in a Syracuse uniform.

The point of this exercise is to build the best pick-up team possible. At the end of this exercise vote on which team you think would win in a game against each other? In the following slides, we go pick-by-pick through and explain our rationale for each selection, enjoy!

https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/news/big-east-presidents-approve-uconns-invitation-to-join-conference-football-programs-future-remains-uncertain/ (cbssports.com; Fornelli, Norlander and Parrish)

Big East presidents formally approved to invite and accept the University of Connecticut as a member on a league-wide conference call Monday morning, sources told CBS Sports' Matt Norlander.

The conference call was the first of three major/official steps expected to happen this week that will attach UConn with the Big East brand again. UConn is on the verge of leaving the American Athletic Conference to return to the Big East ahead of the 2020-21 season, as previously reported by Norlander and Gary Parrish. The Hartford Courant and Digital Sports Desk first reported the move.

UConn's move would affect all of its athletic programs with the exception of football, which the Big East does not sponsor. A source told Parrish this expected move is largely designed to help return men's basketball to the more familiar brand of the Big East. However, the women's basketball program would also prefer to leave the AAC, and Hall of Fame coach Geno Auriemma has privately pushed for the move as well, the source added.

UConn's Board of Trustees plans to vote and approve the move on Wednesday, a source told Norlander.

"I'd be surprised if this ends pretty," a second source told Norlander, noting that the AAC is not going to make this transition easy on the program. "... [The Huskies] never fully embraced the American."

OT: If UConn moves back to the Big East... (RX; HM)

OT: If UConn moves back to the Big East...

You didn't expect conference realignment news this Summer, did you?

The Hartford Courant is reporting that UConn is on the verge of rejoining the Big East, and its football future in the AAC is unclear. And you thought 2019 would be a slow year for conference realignment news!

From the Courant article:
UConn is on the verge of joining the Big East for all sports that the conference sponsors, sources confirmed Saturday morning. Though the university is awaiting and fully expecting an official invitation from the Big East, an announcement of the Huskies’ move is forthcoming.

This move will return UConn to its storied basketball roots and trigger long-term security and better opportunity for its two programs in that sport. However, UConn must figure out what to do with its football program. Dropping the program is not being considered. It is highly unlikely that the American Athletic Conference would have interest in retaining UConn as a football-only member, though with scheduling done well in advance the Huskies are expected to play in the AAC for the upcoming season.

For 2020, UConn will have to find another conference for football or have the program operate as an independent. Details are still being negotiated out on several fronts, including financial. UConn has explored a move to the Big East in recent years but found several sticking points, including high exit fees.

The timing of the move for basketball and other sports is also uncertain, though the Huskies are expected to compete in the AAC for at least one more season.

The AAC exit fee is $10 million and members schools are required to give 27 months notice. The fee would have to be negotiated if UConn leaves earlier than September 2022.

This is a move which had been rumored for over a year. In fact, former Men's Basketball Head Coach (and UConn legend) Jim Calhoun said as much on "The Doug Gottlieb Show" in March of 2018 [LINK].

New movie filming in CNY seeks country-style home for key role (PS; Herbert)

Another feature film is seeking a house in Central New York to play a key role.
According to a press release, “The Shuroo Process: Seven Days to Change your Life” is in pre-production and looking in the Syracuse area for a country-style or farmhouse-type home to use in scenes. The plot follows a young writer, frustrated with the pressures of the publishing world, and her less-than-promising romantic life, who attends an idyllic retreat and becomes infatuated with its wildly charismatic self-help guru.

With the retreat playing a big part in the story, producers are looking for a house that could serve as an “ideal getaway” with a striking porch exterior, multiple bedrooms, and secluded grounds. Ideally, the charming home is near a body of water backdrop, and a barn on the property would be a plus.

If interested in having your property used in the film, submit your information to producers by emailing locations.shurooprocess@gmail.com.

“The Shuroo Process” is scheduled to begin shooting in mid-August through early September. A cast has not been announced.

The movie, from EmCo Entertainment and Incline Productions, is being written by Emrhys Cooper and Donal Brophy. According to the film’s IMDb page, Cooper will be making his feature-length directorial debut with the project.

Cooper and Brophy are producing the film along with Jamie Moss, Amy Breuer, and Glen Trotiner. Trotiner, whose credits include “Captain America” and “Big Daddy,” and Breuer previously worked together on locally shot films like “Big Time Adolescence” and “Holly Slept Over.”
