Welcome to National Canoe Day!

There is magic in the feel of a paddle and the movement of a canoe, a magic compounded of distance, adventure, solitude, and peace.
Sigurd F. Olson

Canoeing is a fantastic hobby, and along with being environmentally friendly and relaxing, its also a great form of outdoor exercise that’s suitable for all ages. It’s no surprise that canoeing gets its own day of celebration, with so many fans around the world. https://www.si.com/college-basketball/2019/06/25/acc-offseason-report-power-rankings-questions (SI; Caron)

As the midpoint of college basketball’s offseason approaches, it’s time to check in on every major conference. Every team in the country has questions at this point of the summer, some more pressing than others. So in addition to power-ranking each league, we’ll be asking some burning questions about the conference that won’t be answered until tip-off. Last week, we opened with the AAC, where Penny Hardaway and Memphis have hogged the headlines. Up next: the ACC, the home of the reigning national champs.

ACC Summer Power Rankings
1. Duke: Tre Jones will run the floor for another group of talented youngsters in Durham, as Vernon Carey, Matthew Hurt & Co. try to top the exploits of Zion Williamson’s team.

2. Louisville: The Cards look like legitimate ACC contenders with Jordan Nwora, incoming freshman Samuell Williamson and graduate transfer Lamarr Kimble leading the way.

3. Virginia: It’s Kihei Clark time. Virginia won’t look the same this season, but don’t sleep on them—Clark, Mamadi Diakite and incoming recruit Casey Morsell should still do big things.

4. North Carolina: No. 4 overall recruit Cole Anthony will be coming in hot for the Tar Heels, but Carolina’s ceiling will closely mirror his. Although Roy Williams will be relying on a lot of new faces this season, the talent is still there to contend for a league title.

5. Florida State: The Seminoles will look for a fresh start this season as Trent Forrest leads a new-look team in Tallahassee. Don’t hold your breath for another surprising Sweet 16 run.

6. NC State: With former signee Jalen Lecque jumping straight to the NBA, the Wolfpack bring in an underwhelming recruiting class but return most of last year’s rotation outside of leading scorer Torin Dorn. They should continue to progress in Kevin Keatts’s third season.

7. Virginia Tech: New head coach Mike Young has his work cut out for him in Blacksburg, but a decent incoming class should help the Hokies hang among the middle of the pack as they do some serious rebuilding.

8. Syracuse: The Orange also lost most of their starting core, but they bring in a pair of four-star wings and a trio of three-stars who should help Jim Boeheim start anew without falling too far.

9. Clemson: With a wave of talent coming in the form of both freshmen and transfers, the Tigers will try to make up for the loss of almost all of last season’s starting five. This young team will need time to rebuild.

10. Boston College: The Eagles return a decent portion of last year’s team, and four three-star recruits are on their way to Chestnut Hill.

Syracuse Basketball: Experts deem SU “favorite” to land Andre Jackson (itlh; Adler)

The Syracuse basketball squad is high on 2020 prospect Andre Jackson, but it seems that SU has some fierce competition for his services.
The Syracuse basketball team is expected to possess a small 2020 recruiting class, given that it has 12 scholarship players on its 2019-20 roster, including no seniors, and 2020 four-star power forward Woody Newton has already committed to the Orange.

As such, the ‘Cuse presently doesn’t have another scholarship available for its 2020 class, although it’s certainly feasible that at least one will open up before the 2020-21 campaign commences, whether due to a current SU guy electing to turn pro or transfer to a different school.

Because of this scholarship situation, Syracuse coaches are acting with laser-focus as they pitch a handful of 2020 targets. From what I can tell, at or near the top of the Orange coaching staff’s wish list is four-star wing Andre Jackson, a rising senior at The Albany Academy in Albany, N.Y., who runs on the AAU circuit with Albany City Rocks.

For a long time now, the ‘Cuse has prioritized the 6-foot-6 Jackson, and several analysts on the 247Sports Web site deem SU the favorite to land him. Of course, the recruiting world is a fickle business, and it’s by no means a guarantee that Jackson will ultimately make his way to the Hill.

Don't sleep on ANDRE JACKSON @andrejackson111
— Overtime (@overtime) June 25, 2019

In a Syracuse.com article that published Tuesday, the always-fabulous reporter Donna Ditota spoke with Jim Hart, the coach of Albany City Rocks. Hart said that Jackson is likely to wait until this fall to reveal his collegiate destination.

Jackson recently made an official visit to the Central New York campus, with Hart describing that trip as “phenomenal – he loved it” in the Syracuse.com piece. That’s definitely encouraging to hear.

However, Jackson holds a bevy of scholarship offers. He has taken visits, of late, to former Big East Conference foe Connecticut and UCLA. The Bruins are led by new head coach Mick Cronin, whose familiarity with Jackson, according to Ditota, dates back to his days guiding Cincinnati.

Syracuse basketball hosts the Carleton Ravens on October 29, a game that will mark the end of Jim Boeheim’s most unsung, international coaching rivalry.

In four months, the Syracuse Orange will play their third ever game against Canada’s most prestigious college basketball program, Carleton, in a game that will officially mark the end of one of Jim Boeheim‘s most unheralded coaching rivalries ever.

The two programs first met in August of 2013, just four months after the Orange’s memorable run to the Final Four in the NCAA Tournament.

During their four-game road trip through Canada, the Orange barely escaped the Ravens’ Nest in Ottawa, defeating Carleton 69-65 on the heels of Jerami Grant‘s 18 points and 11 rebounds and Ontario’s Tyler Ennis‘ 15-point, four rebounds, and five steal performance.

15 months later, the Orange took their turn playing host to the Ravens in November 2014, and much like their previous matchup, Carleton, led by their coach Dave Smart, wouldn’t let up until the waning moments of regulation.

After holding a lead as large as 15 in the first half, and finishing the first frame with a 39-30 lead, the Orange had to rally for a win for the second straight season against the Ravens, beating them 76-68.

Over the next three seasons, fans across Canada waited and waited for the third installment of Boeheim vs. Smart, a third opportunity to see how one of the greatest basketball coaches the NCAA has ever seen would stack up against the most successful CIS coach ever.

https://bustingbrackets.com/2019/06/25/virginia-tech-basketball-breaking-down-the-2019-recruiting-class/ (bustingbrackets.com; Anderson)

Virginia Tech Basketball’s 2019 recruiting class has gotten some order with head coach Mike Young taking over and filling a few needs.

There was a lot of panic among the Virginia Tech Basketball fanbase when it was announced Buzz Williams was leaving the school for the Texas A&M Aggies back in April. After five seasons, a 100-69 record and three consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament, Williams decided to take his talents to the SEC.

Fast forward to two months later and the program looks like it’s in good hands since the hiring of Mike Young. Since his hiring, Young has managed to re-tool the Hokies’ 2019 recruiting class with five new recruits. Williams took the prospects he recruited with him to the SEC but Young hasn’t wasted any time getting talent back on the roster.

He managed to get some prospects to reclass from the 2020 class, and even a de-commit from his former school when it was all said done. When things looked bleak, Young has quietly rebuilt a roster. Now, Virginia Tech looks to be in much better shape with another season quickly approaching.

The grad transfer market is still in full swing, but for the most part, we know what the meaningful parts for the majority of the teams around the country will be.

That means that it is time to start talking about what is coming instead of what was.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at key personnel changes, the impact of the coaching carousel and the most important storylines heading into the 2019-20 season for each of college basketball’s top seven conferences.

Today, we are talking ACC.

KEY OFFSEASON STORYLINES
VIRGINIA’S TALENT EXODUS: The most interesting team in the ACC heading into the 2019-20 season is the reigning national champions.

That’s because the team that we are going to see come November will look almost nothing like the team we saw walk off the court in Minneapolis in April. De’Andre Hunter shocked no one when he left school for the NBA. There shouldn’t be any surprise that Ty Jerome left school, either. Kyle Guy was the player we all expected would be back in Charlottesville this season, but when you consider that A) he was coming off of the greatest redemption story in the history of the sport, B) two of his very best friends and fellow stars on that title winning team were leaving school, and C) the NBA has never valued the one thing that Guy does at an NBA level more, it isn’t all that shocking that he ended up getting picked late in the second round.

But we’re done with last year at this point. Next year is where things get interesting, because this will be the most difficult job that Tony Bennett has had during this run where UVA has been one of the ACC’s elite. Not only did he lose his top three players, but two of the three left a year earlier than we expected heading into last season. That puts the ‘Hoos in a really tough spot. The only guard on the roster with any kind of playing experience is 5-foot-8 sophomore Kihei Clark, which is not exactly ideal for a program that changed the way that they play last season.

The key is going to end up being the development of Mamadi Diakite and Jay Huff. Both of those guys are extremely long and athletic with three-point range. For my money, Diakite is the guy that needs to take the biggest leap. I think he could end up being one of the best defenders in all of college basketball next season, and if the ‘Hoos are going to live up to their preseason hype, they will need him to make as big of an individual jump as anyone in Bennett’s program has made in his decade at Virginia.

CAN LOUISVILLE LIVE UP TO THE HYPE?: Speaking of living up to the hype, it only took Chris Mack a year to get the Cardinals to a place where they are heading into a season as a legitimate national title favorite. Part of it is the newcomers he has coming in — five-star Samuell Williamson headlines a loaded six-man recruiting class while grad transfer Fresh Kimble fills the hole they had at the point — but the biggest reason to be bullish on the ‘Ville this year is who they have returning.
