Welcome to International Left Handers Day!

International Left-Handers Day celebrates the uniqueness of being left-handed and raises awareness about the inconveniences that those who are left-handed deal with, in a world where ninety percent of people are right-handed. Many tools and objects are designed for right-handed people, and hundreds of millions of left-handers must adapt. Not only are the disadvantages that left-handers face highlighted on the day, but any advantages that they have are also celebrated.

Of the ten percent of people who are left-handed, more are men than women. Many recent presidents have also been left-handed, including Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama. Those who are left-handed haven't always risen to such heights of power. Throughout history, left-handed people were considered inferior and were often associated with witchcraft. In Christianity, left is associated with evil, and at the last Judgement, those who are sent to the left are damned. Even a left-handed compliment has a negative connotation, as it is an unflattering compliment.

Syracuse forward Bourama Sidibe and his teammates took a boat tour around Lake Como on Monday in Italy.

Syracuse’s Bourama Sidibe needed trip to embassy to get visa to play in Italy (PS; Ditota)

About three weeks ago, Bourama Sidibe and John Bol Ajak were driven to New York City by a Syracuse basketball team manager to secure a visa that would enable them to travel to Italy with their Orange teammates.

Sidibe, a native of the African nation of Mali, carries a 5-year student visa, which enables him to stay in the United States until its expiration date. But to travel anywhere outside the U.S., Sidibe needs to secure a visa. Ajak, who came to America by way of South Sudan and then Kenya, is governed by the immigration laws of South Sudan and his case apparently was complicated by his restrictive immigration status.

Sidibe was ultimately granted the visa he sought and is here in Italy with his SU teammates. He said he believed his papers were in order and that the New York meeting was a formality. But the Italian Embassy denied Ajak’s application, thereby grounding him in Syracuse and preventing him from playing in his team’s four scheduled basketball games here.

“The thing with Bol was he didn’t have the right visa,” Sidibe said. “He had to have a visa that would have been valid when he came back to the U.S. and he doesn’t have that.”

Ajak, a freshman center, told Sidibe that South Sudan issued him a 3-month temporary student visa. As a Syracuse student, he obviously will reside in the United States longer than that. But he will rely, said Sidibe, on his F-1 or I-20 designation. Those papers essentially enable international students to attend American colleges and universities for the duration of their studies.

The new-look SU men’s basketball team was tested in its first game over in Italy, but the Orange was able to prevail 69-59. Elijah Hughes led the way with 18 points. Buddy Boeheim and freshman Brycen Goodine were the only other SU players in double figures, and both finished with 11 points.

Syracuse held a seven-point lead after one quarter, but that lead was cut to three at the half. SU shot the ball well to open the third quarter and built a 15-point advantage. Again though, the All Stars Varese squad was able to close the gap getting back to within four. The Orange held on down the stretch for the 10-point victory.

Bourama Sidibe got the start at center and finished with eight points, including six in the first quarter. Freshman forward Quincy Guerrier chipped in with nine points. Highly-touted recruit Joe Girard struggled to make shots early but did finish with six points and a couple of made three-pointers.

The Orange will next be in action on Wednesday against Oxygen Bassano at Palazzetto Dello Sport Via Goldoni 12 in Italy.

Louisville basketball is in the running to land several elite-level talents in the 2020 class. Who are some of their top recruiting targets?

Louisville basketball head coach Chris Mack has the program trending in the right direction. In addition to reaching the NCAA Tournament in his first season at the helm, Coach Mack has also been incredible on the recruiting trail and is returning plenty of talent for this coming season. As a result, experts from around the country have pegged UL to be a preseason top-10 team in the country in 2019-20. With Jordan Nwora leading the way and an impressive recruiting class coming in, it is definitely possible for the program to match those high expectations.

Furthermore, the coaching staff has made substantial progress in the 2020 recruiting class. Even though the program is yet to land a commitment, they are heavily involved with a number of top-100 players and it seems as though the Cardinals are on the verge of another elite class. Of course, it is never easy to secure multiple highly-rated prospects but Coach Mack has quickly garnered a reputation as a tremendous recruiter thanks to his relationship-building skills. It is also important to mention that winning on the court traditionally leads to improved recruiting.

At this point in time, Louisville seems to be in the running for 16 different prospects. That is an absurd number and they will obviously not even land half of them, but the Cardinals have built strong relationships with many. The program has been including in several recent list cuts and the coaching staff is clearly keeping an open mind about who they might land in the coming months. Due to this high number of targets, it is nearly impossible to gauge which players will actually make up Louisville’s 2020 class.

To sort this all out a bit, though, let’s take a dive into each of Louisville’s top targets and see what they might bring to the table and where their recruitment currently stands.

Tuesday is Dollar Day at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo (PS)

Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon announced the Rosamond Gifford Zoo will offer $1 admission to all visitors on a special Dollar Day Tuesday, August 13.

Zoo admission is usually $9 for adults aged 18-61, $5 for youth age 3-17 and $5 for seniors age 62 and over. Veterans, active military and children under 2 are always free. Youth age 14 or under must be accompanied by an adult 18 or older to enter the zoo.

County Executive McMahon said, “Our community has been so supportive as we worked on constructing the new walkway at the zoo and expanding Asian Elephant Preserve, so we would like to thank them with a special treat. We are lowering zoo admission to $1 on August 13.”
“I encourage everyone to take advantage of this offer to come out and see what’s new at the zoo, including the beautiful new walkway, our adorable baby elephant Ajay, the new Komodo dragon and the new jellyfish exhibit,” McMahon added.

Besides the new animals and exhibits, the Friends of the Zoo has brought a BIG BUGS! exhibit to the zoo’s Wildlife Trail that runs through Labor Day.
