Welcome to National American Teddy Bear Day!

In November 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt, an avid hunter, went on a hunting excursion organized by Mississippi's governor, Andrew Longino, in Smedes, Mississippi. Roosevelt was accompanied by some aides, other hunters, and reporters, as well as a hunting guide, Holt Collier, and his hunting dogs. After a few days without success, Roosevelt and the hunting dogs were on the trail of a black bear. Having thought that they had lost the bear, Roosevelt went back to camp, but Collier and his dogs kept searching. Collier and his dogs found the 235 pound bear, and the dogs circled it and began biting and attacking it. The bear killed one of the dogs, and Collier clubbed the bear over the head and tied it to a tree. He bugled for Roosevelt, who found the bear mauled from the the dogs, and refused to shoot it. He also forbade anyone else from shooting it, but as the bear was so injured, he had the bear put out of its misery by having it be killed with a hunting knife.

A few days later, a cartoon titled "Drawing the line in Mississippi", which showed Roosevelt refusing to shoot the bear, was drawn by Clifford Berryman, and appeared in the Washington Post. Rose and Morris Mitchom, store owners in New York City, saw the cartoon and were inspired to create the teddy bear, which they originally called "Teddy's bear". They eventually founded the Ideal Toy Company which produced the bears, and even allegedly wrote to Roosevelt asking his permission to use his name for their bear. About the same time as the Mitchom's debuted their bear, Richard Steiff of Germany created a stuffed teddy bear as well, which also became very popular.

The longest winning streak continues: Syracuse basketball defeats Colgate 70-54 (Brent Axe recap) (PS; Axe)

Not yet, Colgate.

The NCAA record for most consecutive wins over an opponent was extended to 54 games on Wednesday night at the Carrier Dome as Syracuse defeated Colgate 70-54.

Despite an ominous warning from a certain local columnist and radio host that Wednesday could be Colgate’s time to pick up its first win over the Orange since 1962, the Raiders didn’t live up to the hype and shot 30 percent from the field in a lackluster upset bid.

The announced crowd of 21,281 was suffering from sore hands doing the usual stand-and-clap routine before Syracuse finally hit a shot after six missed attempts and rolled from there.

Syracuse, which had its worst offensive performance in Jim Boeheim’s tenure against Virginia last week, shot 50.9 percent from the field against Colgate and found a needed offensive rhythm against the Raiders.

Syracuse has the first win of the season under its belt to improve to 1-1 and already has a starting lineup change. Boeheim wasted no time declaring that Joe Girard III will start at point guard over Jalen Carey on Saturday against Seattle at the Dome.

Boeheim offered his usual November soliloquy postgame about the Orange having a lot of work ahead of it, but generally seemed pleased with the win over the Raiders.

Syracuse basketball turns slow start into easy finish against Colgate - The Juice Online (the juice; Stechschulte)

Just over 15 minutes into Wednesday night’s matchup between Syracuse and Colgate, the game was tied at 24 a side. The Orange (1-1) used the next dozen minutes to completely take control, ripping off a 22-4 run for an 18-point lead and cruised to a 70-54 victory over the Raiders (1-2) at the Carrier Dome.

A week after they could hardly buy a shot against Virginia, SU got off to another slow start, missing their first eight shots from the field, but rebounded to finish the night hitting just under 51 percent of their field goal attempts. Rebounding was something else the Orange did well, finishing with a 42-31 rebounding edge, including snaring a dozen offensive boards.

Colgate relied on the three-pointer on the night, as 41 of their 60 field goal attempts came from deep. The Raiders made 13 of them, but shot only 30 percent overall from the field.

Colgate owned the first six minutes of the contest, as Syracuse could not find the bottom of the basket. The visitors got three triples in that time, pulling out to a 9-1 lead.

SU responded with their first run of the night, needing a little over three minutes to post 12 of the game’s next 14 points. Bourama Sidibe started the streak with a couple baskets inside, but the Raiders answered with a field goal. The Orange then went outside, as Buddy Boeheim buried a pair of triples to tie the game. Sidibe then gave Syracuse their first lead just after the nine-minute mark by tapping home a Boeheim miss for a 13-11 edge.

Joe Girard named Syracuse's new starting point guard (247sports.com; McAllister)

Syracuse basketball has a new starting point guard. Following the Orange's 70-54 win over Colgate, head coach Jim Boeheim declared Jalen Carey will head to the bench and in will step Joseph Girard when Syracuse takes the floor against Seattle in a few days.

"Joe will be starting on Saturday," Boeheim said.

And with that, an abrupt end, at least for now, to Jalen Carey as the lead guard of the Orange. Could he earn that job back? In theory, yes. However, generally in situations like this, the benched individual does not come back to retake that starting gig. And there is no doubting how much better the team played when Girard came into the game. There was more movement offensively and shooters were finally able to get open looks.

Carey started the game and played the first 5:28. Syracuse trailed 6-1 and could not get anything going offensively going 0-8 from the floor. Carey also had two turnovers during that stretch. Girard was inserted into the game, and over the next five minutes, Syracuse scored 16 points on 7-9 shooting. Syracuse went from trailing by five to up two.

Girard came out of the locker room as the starter for the second half, and the Orange responded with a decisive 15-3 run right out of the gate. That extended Syracuse's lead to 18 points. Colgate never got closer than 15 the rest of the way.

Coming off of a 14 point loss to Virginia in the season opener in which they only scored 34 points, the lowest under Jim Boeheim, this was a much needed win against a good Colgate team that is predicted to win the Patriot League or the second straight season. Colgate was off of a loss to Clemson where they held a lead late in the second half. The Raiders lost by 13, but showed they can play with power conference teams.

Statement win- Syracuse rebounds with runaway win against solid Colgate team (cnycentral.com; Tamurian)

UPDATE:
Jim Boeheim announced after the game that Joe Girard III will replace Jalen Carey in the starting lineup when Syracuse hosts Seattle on Saturday night.
He also announced that freshman center John Bol Ajak will redshirt this season.

ORIGINAL GAME STORY:

Syracuse Basketball needed a win after a 48-34 season opening loss to Virginia.
They got that, and a whole lot more.

After a slow start and a 9-1 deficit to Colgate Syracuse raced away for a 70-54 win over the Raiders on Wednesday night in the Dome. The Orange led by as many as 24 points before cruising in the game's final minutes for the win.

Syracuse earned impressive outings from Bourama Sidibe who didn't miss a shot all night and scored 12 points while hauling in 14 rebounds and Buddy Boeheim who hit three 3-pointers and scored 17 points.
With the win, Syracuse extends its win streak over Colgate to 54 straight games and has not lost to the Raiders since 1962.

Elijah Hughes turned in a stellar effort with 14 points and eight assists and the Orange really hit its rhythm when Joe Girard III took the floor and made a huge difference with five points, four assists and three steals.

Marek Dolezaj stole the show with an spin-move slam in the second half that fans are still talking about.

Syracuse Basketball Picks Up First Win Over Colgate (warer.org; Hatchett)

In the team's first out of conference test of the young season, Syracuse picked up its first victory of the year against Colgate, 70-54.

Reaching the 70-point plateau was a welcome sight to Orange fans who watched the team struggle in the season opener against Virginia, mustering just 34 points.

After a tight first half, the Orange blew the game open in the second frame, opening the half on a 24-9 run.

Buddy Boeheim and Elijah Hughes each knocked down three shots from beyond the arc, scoring 17 and 14 respectively to lead the Orange.

Big man Bourama Sidibe led the team with 14 rebounds and added 12 points along the way to record his third career double-double.

The Orange were red hot, shooting over 50% from the field, including over 40% from three.

Syracuse Basketball: Joe Girard III era is officially upon us (itlh; Esden Jr)

Syracuse basketball will have a new starting lineup this weekend. Here’s why it’s officially Joe Girard III time for Orange Nation.

It took 45 minutes and 28 seconds for Syracuse basketball head coach Jim Boeheim to make a change to his 2019-20 starting lineup.

It’s now officially Joe Girard III time on the hill.

In game one Syracuse’s offense was awful vs Virginia. The team only mustered 34 points, but despite all the deficiencies, it seemed like the Orange got a pass based on the opponent’s reputation.

That wasn’t the case in game two vs Colgate on Wednesday night.

Jalen Carey got the start, as he has throughout the offseason (foreign trips, exhibition play, and early in the regular season), but 5:28 into the first half, the experiment was over.

After going 0-for-2 from the field, committing a dumb foul, and coughing up two turnovers, coach Boeheim had seen enough.

Syracuse Pulls Away for 70-54 Win - Colgate University Athletics (gocolgateradiers.com)

Jordan Burns scored 12 points and Nelly Cummings added 10 but a strong second half led Syracuse past Colgate 70-54 Wednesday night at the Carrier Dome.

Burns led Colgate with four 3-pointers. Rapolas Ivanauskas finished with nine rebounds and dished out six assists, while Will Rayman hauled in eight boards and posted five points.

It was a tough night shooting but Colgate came out strong with treys from Tucker Richardson, Rayman, and Jack Ferguson coasting the Raiders out front 9-1 six minutes in. Syracuse started 0-for-8 from the field but connected on four of its next five, including a pair of 3-pointers from Buddy Boeheim that tied the game 11-11 at the 11-minute mark.

A nice dish from Ferguson led to an easy bucket for Rayman inside and David Maynard followed with his first of two 3-pointers to give Colgate an 18-17 lead. Syracuse responded with seven unanswered points – five straight Elijah Hughes – to go up 24-18 before back-to-back 3-pointers from Cummings and Burns tied the game at 24-24 with four minutes left in the half. The Orange, however, closed on a 7-1 spurt to hold a 31-25 lead at the half.

Colgate (1-2) missed its first four shots of the second half, allowing Syracuse to extend its lead to double digits on a 3-pointer by Joseph Girard III four minutes into the frame. After Richardson netted a trey to cut the deficit to seven, Colgate over the next six minutes fell into an 0-for-8 cold spell with five turnovers, and Syracuse flipped that into a 51-31 lead.

Syracuse (1-1) stayed in control the rest of the way, extending its lead to as many as 24 on a 3-pointer from Boeheim, who finished with a game-high 17 points on 7-of-14 from the floor and 3-of-5 from beyond the arc.

Burns drained three of his four treys over a four-minute span down the stretch. Keegan Records and Zach Light scored their first points of the season late but Syracuse closed out the 70-54 triumph.

BOTTOM LINE
Syracuse 70, Colgate 54

QUOTES
Head Coach Matt Langel
On the game:
"Obviously we can't practice against the size, length, and athleticism that Clemson and Syracuse have. How much we've turned the ball over these last two games is proof of that. The reality is that not many teams play zone against us, so we have to focus our practices on what we are going to see most of the year. Two days to prepare played a factor tonight as well. Wrap all of that up and that's the difference tonight."

On the tough shooting night:
"Our shots just did not go in at times tonight. We like our 3-point shooting and we are going to take 3-point shots, but to keep ourselves competitive and stay in the hunt tonight, we had to step up and make a few more than we did. What we are working on is the mindset involved when you don't make them. When it goes in, everybody feels great. But when it doesn't, everyone has another job to do and we all have to be focused in."

On Auburn Monday:
"Auburn is coming off more success than each of the three teams we have played so far. We will try to prepare like crazy for the game, but at this point in the year we have to stay focused on ourselves and getting better on a day-to-day basis."

MBB: ACC vs. OOC - 11/14/19

Here's another idea I borrowed from a CSNBBS user: a tracker for ACC men's basketball vs. other conferences for the 2019-20 season.

By my count the ACC is 22-1 out-of-conference, with Pitt having the one loss (to Nichols? Oh, well). That includes Duke over Kansas and FSU over Florida. Of course, non-conference competition will get much tougher as football season winds down.

College basketball signing day: In-depth look at ACC recruiting classes, including U of L (C-J; Aulbach)

If you want to compete for an ACC title, it starts with recruiting. And all of the big names have reloaded this season with a trip to Indianapolis for the 2021 Final Four in mind.

Duke and North Carolina have the consensus top two classes across the NCAA, according to most major recruiting outlets, but 2019 champion Virginia, 2020 contender Louisville, upstart Florida State, fast-rising Miami and several other schools from around the ACC are signing classes that could have what it takes to bring some hardware back to campus.

Fans around the country are going to want to know names like Jalen Johnson, Scottie Barnes, Walker Kessler and Jay Scrubb (if he even makes it to campus). You can bet you’ll see a few of them in “One Shining Moment” next season.

Here’s an in-depth look at the ACC's 2020 basketball class:

The rich get richer

Stop me if you’ve heard this one — Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski and his staff scored a group of top prospects that has enough talent to bring a title to Durham. Coach K’s signing class has top-5 forward Jalen Johnson and 5-star point guard Jeremy Roach, with four other 4- or 5-star prospects. North Carolina is just as deep, with two 5-star centers (Walker Kessler and Day’Ron Sharpe) and three solid perimeter guys (Caleb Love, Puff Johnson, R.J. Davis).

Fear the second tier

You could see six ACC schools scoring top-25 classes. Virginia reloaded with three 4-star backcourt guys (small forward Jabri Abdur-Rahim, guards Reece Beekman and Carson McCorkle). Florida State landed Scottie Barnes, a top NBA prospect, and two high-upside 3- or 4-star guards (Sardaar Calhoun, Malachi Wideman). Louisville scored the best junior college player in wing Jay Scrubb, who could go pro instead, along with 4-star projects D’Andre Davis and JJ Traynor. And Miami made waves with forwards Earl Timberlake and Matt Cross.

Sometimes all you need is one guy in basketball to win, and other ACC schools have landed difference makers. NC State can build around 4-star point guard Cam Hayes, and Clemson has potential with 4-star prospects P.J. Hall and Olivier-Maxence Prosper. Virginia Tech is making moves with two 4-star signees under new coach Mike Young, and Jeff Capel scored 4-star center John Hugley and two others at Pittsburgh. This league is deep every season, and 2020-21 will be no exception.

More: Why did 2020 prospects choose Louisville after the recruiting scandal? Let them explain

Ranking the classes

Like we said, there’s talent from top to bottom across the ACC’s 2020 signing classes. Let’s take a quick look at each team.

1. Duke: Jalen Johnson is the star small forward and Jeremy Roach is the future at point, but this group is deep everywhere. Big men Mark Williams, Henry Coleman and Jaemyn Brakefield can play in the post, and don’t sleep on combo guard D.J. Steward.

2. UNC: As deep as any class in the nation. Walker Kessler and Day’Ron Sharpe should be stars in the post, and in a class of great point guards, Caleb Love still stands out. Puff Johnson is a star forward with a star name, R.J. Davis is oozing potential in the backcourt, and the Tar Heels are also still in the mix for star prospects Greg Brown and Ziaire Williams.

3. Florida State: Scottie Barnes has top-5 potential in the 2021 NBA Draft. The 6-foot-8 combo forward has as much buzz as anyone in the entire 2020 signing class. Watch him, and 4-star forwards Sardaar Calhoun and Malachi Wideman.

4. Virginia: Tony Bennett reloads with three guys with tons of potential, including star small forward Jabri Abdur-Rahim, the son of NBA great Shareef Abdur-Rahim. Carson McCorkle may be more of a project, but Reece Beekman should make an impact at the point immediately.

5. Louisville: It all hinges on star JUCO wing Jay Scrubb. If he shows up rather than entering the NBA draft, the Cardinals could be a top-10 class nationally. Wing D’Andre Davis brings potential along with big man JJ Traynor, a skilled stretch-four who needs to add muscle. Louisville is also seeking a commitment from 4-star point guard Jalen Terry.

6. Miami: Small forward Earl Timberlake is a star in the making, and power forward Matt Cross may be the smartest prospect in this class — after all, he's going from high school in New Hampshire to college in Coral Gables.

7. NC State: Point guard Cam Hayes is the name to know, and the Wolfpack has commitments from high-upside big men Nick Farrar and Ebenezer Dowuona as well. Josh Hall, a 4-star small forward, is also strongly considering NC State.

8. Clemson: P.J. Hall is probably ready to make an impact down low for the Tigers, while tweener forward Olivier-Maxence Prosper is a name to know as well.

9. Virginia Tech: It's not a deep class in Blacksburg, but it's a solid one, with a pair of 4-star guards shooting guards (Joe Bamisile and Darius Maddox) with size and skills.

10. Pittsburgh: Size is the key for this class, with 4-star center John Hugley joined by 3-star forwards Noah Collier and Max Amadasun.

11. Syracuse: The Orange have two 4-star prospects to build around in combo guard Kadary Richmond and power forward Woody Newton.

Big distribution center project in Clay gets final OK (PS; Moriarty)

A huge distribution center project that will create 1,000 jobs and that many believe is for online retail giant Amazon received final approval Wednesday night.

The Clay Planning Board voted 6-0, with one abstention, to approve the site plan for the proposed $350 million distribution center on a 110-acre site currently occupied by the Liverpool Public Golf and Country Club on Morgan Road. It was the last approval that developer Trammell Crow Co. needed from the town.

The Clay Town Board granted a zone change from recreational to industrial for the project on Nov. 6. On Monday, the town’s Zoning Board of Appeals approved variances from side yard setback requirements for fencing. The Onondaga County Industrial Development Agency voted Oct. 31 to approve $70.8 million in tax breaks for the project over 15 years.

George Laigaie, a principal of Dallas-based Trammell Crow, said after the planning board vote that the company plans to begin construction in the spring of 2020 and complete the building by August 2021.
In terms of floor space, the building will be one of the largest distribution centers in the world, with nearly 3.8-million-square-feet of space spread over five floors and a mezzanine level. It will operate 24 hours a day.

One planning board member praised a rendering that the developer provided of the huge building.
“Considering its size, I think it’s going to look like a decent structure,” said Allen Kovac.
Planning board Chairman Russ Mitchell said Trammell Crow took his suggestions and changed the paint schemes for the building so the structure would look more attractive and less imposing.
