Welcome to National Ice Cream Sundae Day!

Ithaca’s claim to the ice cream sundae takes place at Platt & Colt Pharmacy in 1892 where Reverend John M. Scott stops to order a bowl of ice cream. When Chester Platt, proprietor, began preparing the ice cream for his customer, he didn’t stop at just a couple of scoops of vanilla. Platt drizzled cherry syrup over the ice cream and topped them with a bright red, candied cherry. The dessert looked and tasted so delightful it required its own name. Since the day was Sunday, it was named for the day it was created. Ithaca also has historical evidence supporting the story, including an advertisement for a Cherry Sunday.

Donte Greene out-plays 7-2 Isaac Haas: 'I think Boeheim would be proud' (PS; Waters)

Donte Greene stepped into the center circle for the opening tap in Boeheim’s Army’s game against the Men of Mackey and looked up. Way up.

Standing opposite Greene was Isaac Haas, the 7-foot-2, 295-pound former Purdue center.
For the rest of the night, Greene, a power forward by trade pressed into duty as the starting center for an undermanned Boeheim’s Army squad, went up against the gargantuan Haas.

“Haas has some size,‘' Greene said. “That’s a big boy. It was tough. I really don’t think there was any way for planning for him.‘'

Giving away at least three inches in height and over 50 pounds on the scales, Greene more than held his ground in a 76-69 victory in The Basketball Tournament’s Round of 16 in Columbus, Ohio, on Tuesday.

Greene, who spent one year at Syracuse before entering the 2008 NBA draft where he was a first-round pick, scored 16 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

Eric Devendorf, Boeheim's Army hero, on his lefty finish, his vegan diet: 'He's a gamer' (PS; Ditota)

Someone called Eric Devendorf “the ageless wonder” during the postgame media opportunity Tuesday in Columbus, Ohio.

Devendorf, Donte Greene and Ryan Blackwell laughed, but the sentiment was perfect for The Basketball Tournament moment.

Devendorf, now 33, was every bit as electrifying in Boeheim’s Army’s 76-69 win over Men of Mackey as he was during his Syracuse playing days.

Like father, Like son: Buddy Boeheim finds on-court success at Syracuse - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)

Like a lot of new players adjusting to a higher level of basketball, Buddy Boeheim struggled out of the gate during his freshman season at Syracuse. Over the first 15 games of the 2018-19 season, Boeheim averaged 11.9 minutes and 3.7 points per game — while shooting 25.5 percent on his 3-point attempts (3.1 3PA per game).

Boeheim came on strong to finish his rookie season, though; the 6-foot-6 wing shot 40.7 percent on 3-point attempts in ACC play (No. 8 in the conference), with an effective shooting rate of 59.9 percent.

The game plan for Boeheim that year was simple: spot-up around Tyus Battle and shoot off the catch from deep. It worked: over 70 percent of his field goal attempts were of the 3-point variety, and 94 percent of his made 3s were assisted.

According to Synergy Sports, Boeheim scored 1.09 points per possession (53.1 eFG%) on spot-up no-dribble jumpers that season, too. This ranked fifth among ACC rookies with 40+ field goal attempts — behind Coby White, Devin Vassell, Micahel Devoe and Dane Goodwin.

Fizz Four: Controversies No. 2 – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Gross)

The big bad NCAA came for Syracuse’s jugular in March of 2016. After a ludicrously lengthy investigation of eight years, the infractions committee imposed harsh penalties and sanctions against mostly the basketball program, but also the football program. You can read a much less entertaining, more official summary of the violations here, but allow me.
  • Syracuse did not punish players for failing internal drug tests due to Marijuana positives. If only Frank Howard played ten years sooner.
  • A booster paid players hefty sums for “volunteering” at a local YMCA.
  • Men’s basketball staff members did a players’ homework in 2012. Football players misrepresented an internship for credit from 2005-2007.
Overall, the NCAA cited a “lack of institutional control,” and really dropped the hammer.
  • 101 wins were erased from Jim Boeheim’s coaching record.
  • A total of 12 scholarships were taken away from men’s basketball. Based on precedent, that is way too many. Syracuse appealed and won. Four scholarships were returned from the initial penalty.
  • Boeheim was suspended for the first nine games of the 2015-16 season. Pre-appeal, it was the first nine games of conference play.
  • The football and basketball programs were placed on five-year probation. That doesn’t affect much, but it certainly sounds scary.

Amid hostile name-calling, Onondaga County lawmakers reject redistricting plan (PS; Knauss)

By a straight party-line vote, Onondaga County legislators today rejected a proposal to give their power to redraw legislative districts to a non-partisan panel of citizens.

The legislature’s 11 Republicans voted against it, and six Democrats voted for it.

The vote came after bitter partisan debate in which Democrats and Republicans accused each other of trying to manipulate the redistricting process for partisan advantage.

After 90 minutes of increasingly hostile speech-making, Legislator Peggy Chase, D-Syracuse, chided her fellow lawmakers.

“I am so distressed with the behavior here today and the names that have been called,‘' Chase said. “Just awful, absolutely awful.”

The redistricting proposal from Legislator Chris Ryan, D-Geddes, called for the creation of a 17-person redistricting commission composed of voters with no connection to public officials or county government. Ryan’s proposed local law would have given the citizen commission absolute authority to create legislative districts, a power that now rests with the county legislature.

The proposal was similar to a plan adopted by the Syracuse Common Council and approved by city voters last year. Mayor Ben Walsh, Common Council President Helen Hudson and other city councilors had urged the county legislature to approve Ryan’s proposal.

But Republicans said the proposal was deeply flawed. Legislature Chairman David Knapp said he doubted the law would withstand legal challenge. It would authorize unelected people to create legislative districts that have “the force and effect of law,” seemingly in violation of the state constitution’s home rule provision, Knapp said.

Knapp and other Republicans also criticized Ryan’s proposal for issuing what they called a “blank check'' for the redistricting commission to spend as much as they saw fit on staff or
