Welcome to International Literacy Day!

International Literacy Day 2020 focuses on “Literacy teaching and learning in the COVID-19 crisis and beyond,” especially on the role of educators and changing pedagogies. The theme highlights literacy learning in a lifelong learning perspective, and therefore, mainly focuses on youth and adults. The recent Covid-19 crisis has been a stark reminder of the existing gap between policy discourse and reality: a gap that already existed in the pre-COVID-19 era and negatively affects the learning of youth and adults, who have no or low literacy skills, and therefore, tend to face multiple disadvantages. During COVID-19, in many countries, adult literacy programmes were absent in the initial education response plans, so most adult literacy programmes that did exist were suspended, with just a few courses continuing virtually, through TV and radio, or in open air spaces. What is the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on youth and adult literacy educators and teaching and learning? What are the lessons learnt? How can we effectively position youth and adult literacy learning in global and national responses and in strategies for the recovery and resilience-building phase?

By exploring these questions, International Literacy Day 2020 provides an opportunity to reflect on and discuss how innovative and effective pedagogies and teaching methodologies can be used in youth and adult literacy programmes to face the pandemic and beyond. The Day will also give an opportunity to analyse the role of educators, as well as formulate effective policies, systems, governance and measures that can support educators and learning.

Syracuse basketball 5-star target Zion Cruz says loyalty ‘really matters’ (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball high-priority 2022 target Zion Cruz is pumped about playing alongside Orange commit Dior Johnson at Oak Hill.

Syracuse basketball fans are hopeful to potentially see high-school teammates Dior Johnson and Zion Cruz join forces in a dream pairing on the Hill.

Johnson, a 2022 five-star point guard who is No. 3 nationally in that class according to 247Sports, committed to the ‘Cuse back in February.

Meanwhile, 2022 five-star guard Cruz is a high-priority target for the Orange coaching staff, and he is deemed a consensus top-25 prospect in this cycle, per the main recruiting services. ESPN.com presently rates him the highest, at No. 16 overall.

Earlier this year, both elected to transfer for their junior and senior stanzas to the powerhouse prep-school program at Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Va. Johnson left Mayfair High School in Lakewood, Calif., and Cruz moved on from Hudson Catholic Regional High School in Jersey City, N.J.

In a recent interview with national analyst Eric Bossi, Cruz says that he sees himself as more of a point guard than a combo guard.

Since Johnson, too, mans the point-guard position, whether that becomes an issue for Syracuse basketball in terms of landing Cruz is something that we’ll have to monitor.

Then again, the 6-foot-3 Johnson has discussed a possible reclassify into the 2021 class, and it’s certainly feasible that these two elite players could get on the court together, regardless of who is officially the point guard.

Syracuse Basketball: 2022 target Chance Westry playmaking on display (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball high-priority target Chance Westry, a 2022 four-star guard, shined at a recent event.

The Hoop City Basketball Club recently held its “Hoop City Showcase” in Memphis, Tenn., and Syracuse basketball target Chance Westry proved one of the top stand-outs at the event.

According to an article by scouting analyst Travis Graf that got published on madehoops.com, the 6-foot-5 Westry collected a stellar 33 points to pace all scorers in the contest.

Westry, a four-star guard in the 2022 recruiting cycle and big-time target for the Orange coaching staff, “scored from all three levels and displayed everything from crafty finishes in the paint to knocking down three of eight three-point attempts,” Graf wrote.

Graf adds that Westry got to the free-throw line with consistency by continually putting pressure on his defender. Westry, per Graf, is a “strong playmaker, both for himself and for others,” and he possesses a “very high basketball IQ to go with his elite scoring ability.”

Syracuse basketball high-priority target Chance Westry, a 2022 four-star guard, performed admirably at a recent showcase.

A consensus top-40 player nationally in the 2022 class according to the primary recruiting Web sites, Westry is rated as high as No. 25 overall by the 247Sports Composite.

We recently reported that Westry, a rising junior, decided to transfer from Trinity High School in Camp Hill, Pa., to the Sierra Canyon School in the Los Angeles suburb of Chatsworth, Calif.

Bronny James, a four-star point guard in the 2023 class who is the son of NBA superstar LeBron James, also suits up for the Sierra Canyon School.

The ‘Cuse offered a scholarship to Westry in July of 2019 and for some time now has amounted to a potential favorite to land him. However, Westry owns more than 20 offers from a range of high-major squads, according to the main recruiting services, so competition for him is quite extensive.

Syracuse Basketball: 2021 commit Benny Williams sees stock climb (itlh; Adler)

A national analyst looked at 10 players from the 2021 class whose stock is on the rise, with Syracuse basketball commit Benny Williams featured.

Syracuse basketball 2021 commit Benny Williams is on some kind of roll, and Orange fanatics are eagerly anticipating his arrival on the Hill in about a year’s time.

The 6-foot-8, four-star small forward recently revealed that he is transferring from St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in Potomac, Md., to the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., for his senior season.

The IMG Academy, as we’ve pointed out in the past, boasts one of the premier prep-school programs across the country, and Williams should shine there.

Recruiting service 247Sports has published its updated rankings of the top-150 prospects across the country in the 2021 recruiting cycle, and Williams moved up three spots, to No. 36 overall.

Meanwhile, at this juncture, the 247Sports Composite places him at No. 40, and both ESPN.com and slot Williams at No. 51. However, I’d expect some of those ratings to change, in a positive fashion, down the line.

Syracuse basketball commit Benny Williams, a 2021 four-star small forward, is seeing his stock soar in this class.

Eric Bossi, a national analyst with , has written a story entitled “2021 summer stock boosters.” Even amid the novel coronavirus pandemic, high-school players have proven able to showcase their skills at live-streamed events and combines, he says.

What is it? DEC put new white catfish fishing record on hold, pending a DNA test (PS; Figura)

State Department of Environmental Conservation officials said late last week they are holding off officially recognizing a new state fishing record for a catfish recently caught in the Mohawk River, pending a DNA test.

The fish, caught by Chris Brockett, of Loudonville on Aug. 22 was initially thought to be a white catfish. Brockett caught in the fish from shore on cut bait near Waterford. It weighed 12 pounds and measured 30.5 inches long.

Brian Canzeri, a state conservation officer, witnessed the weighing of Brockett’s fish on an official scale, noting it beat the current white catfish state record of 10.5 pounds. That fish was caught by Joe Silicato in 1998 on the New Croton Reservoir in Westchester County.

White catfish, which are relatively rare in this state, are different from the more common channel catfish in several subtle ways.

Channel catfish get bigger have narrower heads; sharper forked tails, blackish chin barbels (whiskers) – and have 25 to 28 rays, while a white catfish has 22 to 25 rays. The rays are the flexible, fleshy parts of the fin between the spines that control the fin movements.

Brockett’s fish, Canzeri said, had a whitish belly; a wider, bullhead-like head, a shallow fork in its tail – and upon initial glance, a total of 24 rays. In his opinion, it was a white catfish.

A DEC fisheries biologist initially agreed with Canzeri, said Brockett, who was initially told he had the new record pending completion of some paperwork. That changed, though, the following day when a second look at the fish by a DEC staffer determined the fish had 27 rays.
