Welcome to National Teddy Bear Day!

National Teddy Bear Day is dedicated to the stuffed bear that was named after the 26th President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt. In November 1902, Roosevelt, an avid hunter, went on a hunting excursion organized by Mississippi's governor, Andrew Longino, in Smedes, Mississippi. Roosevelt was accompanied by some aides, other hunters, and reporters, as well as a hunting guide, Holt Collier, and his hunting dogs. After a few days without success, Roosevelt and the hunting dogs were on the trail of a black bear. Having thought that they had lost the bear, Roosevelt went back to camp, but Collier and his dogs kept searching. Collier and his dogs found the 235 pound bear, and the dogs circled it and began biting and attacking it. The bear killed one of the dogs, and Collier clubbed the bear over the head and tied it to a tree. He bugled for Roosevelt, who found the bear mauled from the the dogs, and refused to shoot it. He also forbade anyone else from shooting it, but as the bear was so injured, he had the bear put out of its misery by having it be killed with a hunting knife.

A few days later, a cartoon titled "Drawing the line in Mississippi", which showed Roosevelt refusing to shoot the bear, was drawn by Clifford Berryman, and appeared in the Washington Post. Rose and Morris Mitchom, store owners in New York City, saw the cartoon and were inspired to create the teddy bear, which they originally called "Teddy's bear". They eventually founded the Ideal Toy Company which produced the bears, and even allegedly wrote to Roosevelt asking his permission to use his name for their bear. About the same time as the Mitchom's debuted their bear, Richard Steiff of Germany created a stuffed teddy bear as well, which also became very popular.

Syracuse's Jim Boeheim: Rival Georgetown coach John Thompson 'was an incredible presence in our game' (usatoday.com; Boeheim)

“Manley Field House is officially closed.”

Eric “Sleepy” Floyd had just helped Georgetown close out a 52-50 win that ended Syracuse’s 57-game winning streak at its home venue. Floyd’s free throws in the final seconds would be remembered much less than the six words Hoyas coach John Thompson uttered to the media afterward.

“The statement spoke for itself,” says longtime Hoyas radio voice Rich Chvotkin, who remembered Thompson’s words being met with near silence that Feb. 13, 1980. “Basically, when you hear something like that, you didn’t have to say anything else. ‘Let’s take some questions and …’ No. The statement spoke itself that Manley Field House is officially closed, the streak is over, we don’t have to come back to this venue again and we basically closed it out with a victory.”

Syracuse would move to the Carrier Dome the next season, a larger venue that would be needed to satiate fans’ interest in Georgetown-Syracuse. The Manley game came during the first season of the Big East Conference and would kick-start a rivalry that would rage until Thompson resigned as Georgetown’s coach in 1999.

Alan Griffin "On The Block" 9-8 ESPN; radio; Axe)

New Syracuse guard Alan Griffin joins Brent “On The Block” to talk about his decision to join the Orange, what he brings to the Syracuse basketball team, what he likes to do off the court and more.

Syracuse Basketball: Orange is slotted No. 7 in the ACC by Jon Rothstein (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball is deemed middle of the pack by CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein, but he does give some praise to a few Orange players.

Heading into the 2020-21 campaign, Syracuse basketball returns four starters from a season ago, has a deep bench and possesses a strong 2020 recruiting class.

Still, the loss of former Orange star Elijah Hughes to the professional ranks is a big void to fill, as he led the Atlantic Coast Conference in scoring a stanza ago.

Alan Griffin, a talented junior wing who transferred to the ‘Cuse from Illinois, recently received a waiver from the NCAA for immediate eligibility. That is huge news for Syracuse basketball, as the team attempts to replace Hughes.

With Griffin able to officially compete in 2020-21, I’ve got the Orange as a fringe top-25 squad and slotted in the No. 6 position within the ACC.

I also believe that Syracuse basketball will hear its name called on Selection Sunday, although that depends in part on what the size of the NCAA Tournament field is come next spring, amid the novel coronavirus pandemic.

CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein, one of the best in the business, has the ‘Cuse one spot lower, at No. 7 in the league. Rothstein has published his ACC preview, and he is giving some love to several Syracuse basketball players.

In his pre-season power rankings for the conference, he’s got Virginia at No. 1, followed by Duke, Florida State, North Carolina, Miami, Louisville, Syracuse, Georgia Tech, Clemson, N.C. State, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Boston College, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest.

Personally, I’m forecasting the Orange slightly ahead of the Hurricanes, but Rothstein’s arrangement of the 15 ACC crews is pretty spot on.

In his piece, Rothstein notes 15 under-the-radar freshmen, and among those on his list are Kadary Richmond and center John Bol Ajak. Richmond is a four-star combo guard and member of the ‘Cuse 2020 recruiting cycle, while Ajak redshirted a term ago.

Who is ACC basketball’s starting five?

Believe it or not, the ACC basketball season was scheduled to start in less than two months.

As things do in 2020, the ACC basketball and college basketball landscape has shifted significantly to adapt to a global pandemic.

However, that doesn’t mean that we can’t start shifting our attention more towards the season.

As Jon Rothstein did on Monday, we compiled what we feel would the ACC basketball starting five if the season were to start today.

David Johnson, G
Louisville

David Johnson battled a shoulder injury last season and fought for playing time behind a veteran guard rotation. When he was on, however, he was often the best player on the court.
Louisville basketball head coach Chris Mack lauded Johnson’s playmaking ability time and time again in 2019; most notably his ability as an elite-level passer.

Johnson is a 6’5” point guard who had his breakout moment on the road at Duke last season, but he made his fair share of ridiculous plays throughout the year.

With a full offseason to get healthy, an improved Johnson will be a key returning piece for Louisville basketball and a dark horse player of the year candidate.

Chris Lykes, G
Miami

There is no great player who has flown under the radar in the ACC more than Miami’s Chris Lykes.

Perhaps it’s due to his team’s lack of success during his career, or maybe he doesn’t get enough love because of his slight stature. Whatever the case, Lykes deserves his due as the real deal.

Last season, Lykes averaged 15.4 points, 2.4 assists, and 1.1 steal per game. Now, entering his senior season, Lykes could have the pieces around him to take a huge leap and finally get the recognition he deserves.

Sam Hauser, F
Virginia

The highest profile transfer last season was Marquette forward Sam Hauser.

The dynamic forward averages 14.9 points, 7.2 boards, and 2.4 assists for the Golden Eagles in 2018-19. Now, under Tony Bennett, Hauser feels like the perfect fit with the Virginia Cavaliers.

A solid, lanky defender with a ridiculous penchant for hitting three point shots, Hauser is the no-brainer in this list.

Jalen Johnson, F
Duke
