Welcome to National Mushroom Day!

National Mushroom Day celebrates edible mushrooms, which can be eaten plain, be stuffed, or be used in salads, soups, and sauces. Culinary mushrooms first began being cultivated in the early eighteenth century, in France. They were known as Parisian mushrooms by those outside of the country, and the English exported them to America by the end of the nineteenth century. It was mainly these white and brown Agaricus bisporus mushrooms that were cultivated and sold, none more so than cremini mushrooms. Beginning in the 1940s, many other types of mushrooms began being cultivated on a wider basis.

Syracuse Basketball is Back! Three Important Questions Heading Into This Season – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; May)

Today, October 14th, marks the start of the 2020-2021 men’s basketball season! Well, kinda. Today, teams are allowed to officially start practicing. This includes Syracuse of course. So, with the season starting to rev up, here are three important questions for the Orange.

HOW DO YOU REPLACE ELIJAH HUGHES?

It’s a pretty loaded question, right? Replacing the ACC’s leading scorer and an All-ACC First Teamer is no easy task. Hughes was an important piece to the Syracuse defense and pretty much the entire offense. Simply put, SU doesn’t have another Elijah Hughes on its roster right now. So, to replace his production, it’s not going to be one guy. The Orange are going to have to have a committee approach.

Hughes took 465 field goals last season. If you do your math correctly, that is 25% of all field goals taken by the team. So, one player accounted for a quarter of the shots and that player is now gone. You should expect to see Alan Griffin taking a good portion of that offensive output. Buddy Boeheim and Joe Girard will each take more shots too. Boeheim averaged 13.6 field goals per game, while Girard averaged 11 last season. They will both add about three to four more attempts each this year. Plus, Quincy Guerrier and Marek Dolezaj may see a few more shots here and there, but nothing too drastic. Offensively, it will be Griffin, Boeheim, and Girard.

Syracuse Basketball: Sorry Andy Katz, but Joe Girard III is a top-15 PG (itlh; Adler)

Andy Katz has listed 15 point guards who could win the Bob Cousy Award in 2020-21, but he omitted Syracuse basketball sophomore Joe Girard III.

As we discussed in a recent column, Syracuse basketball point guard Joe Girard III is primed for a break-out sophomore campaign.

Unfortunately, college basketball insider Andy Katz hasn’t included Girard among his top-15 candidates to capture the Bob Cousy Award in the 2020-21 campaign, and Katz absolutely should have. The Bob Cousy Award, by the way, is doled out annually to the country’s premier point guard at the collegiate level.

In order from No. 1 to No. 15, Katz’s list is Illinois junior Ayo Dosunmu, Baylor junior Jared Butler, Oklahoma State freshman Cade Cunningham, Creighton junior Marcus Zegarowski, Arizona State senior Remy Martin, Kansas senior Marcus Garrett, Villanova senior Collin Gillespie, Rutgers senior Geo Baker, Pepperdine senior Colbey Ross, Richmond senior Jacob Gilyard, Virginia junior Kihei Clark, Colorado senior McKinley Wright IV, Rhode Island senior Fatts Russell, Dayton senior Jalen Crutcher and LSU junior Javonte Smart.

Syracuse Basketball: Recruiting buzz for next few classes is so exciting (itlh; Adler)

Some Syracuse basketball fans have lamented about the team’s recruiting since joining the ACC in 2013-14, but the Orange’s near-term outlook is exceptional.

What Syracuse basketball has on the horizon in its recruiting efforts over the next couple of cycles is hopefully something that is juicing up Orange fans.

In recent seasons, following the ‘Cuse move from the Big East Conference to the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2013-14, it’s no secret that the Orange has put forth numerous so-so performances, particularly in regular stanzas.

To that end, a contingent of Syracuse basketball fans has grown frustrated with the team’s results on the court of late, as well as the Orange’s endeavors on the recruiting trail. There is certainly validity to how these folks feel.

On the flip side, and I’m not making excuses here, but the NCAA sanctions levied against the ‘Cuse several years ago definitely stung the team in the recruiting arena.

When 2018 five-star forward Darius Bazley de-committed from Syracuse basketball to get ready for the NBA Draft, that proved the last straw for a group of Orange fans totally frustrated with the ‘Cuse recruiting efforts.

NCAA announces 4 New York sites for future Men’s Basketball Tournament games (PS; $; Carlson)

The NCAA announced that four venues in New York will host NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament games between 2023 and 2026, but Syracuse University’s Carrier Dome will not be one of them.
The college sports governing body announced hundreds of future sites across a variety of sports and levels on Wednesday with the Division I men’s basketball tournament the most high profile of the events.

Syracuse Executive Senior Associate Athletic Director for Communications Sue Edson said that the school did put in a bid to host the regional semifinals and finals in men’s basketball. The cities picked to host those rounds were larger cities like Chicago, Houston, San Jose and Indianapolis.

Syracuse last hosted regional semifinals and finals in 2015, an event that included North Carolina State, Louisville, Michigan State and Oklahoma.

The NCAA’s list of criteria has traditionally included criteria that favors larger cities like lodging options, airline service, previous history hosting NCAA championships and attendance potential. It has also traditionally given consideration to an area or venue that has not hosted the event recently, a designation Syracuse would seem to have qualified for.

While the lack of games in the Carrier Dome is disappointing, the NCAA’s announcement did provide local fans with a number of short trips to watch NCAA Tournament games in coming years.

In 2023, the NCAA will host first and second-round games in Albany’s Times-Union Center and regional semifinals and finals in Madison Square Garden. In 2024, first and second-round games will be held in Brooklyn’s Barclays Center and in 2026, first and second-round games will be held in Buffalo’s KeyBank Center.

Previously scheduled NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament games in the state include region quarterfinals and finals in Brooklyn this year, as well as first and second-round games in Buffalo in 2022.

How NCAA's Winter Sports Eligibility Ruling Impacts Syracuse Basketball (SI; McAllister)

On Wednesday, the NCAA ruled that winter sport athletes who compete in the 2020-21 season will "receive both an additional season of competition and an additional year in which to complete it." Winter sports would include basketball, which lead to some interesting scenarios for Syracuse.

Current seniors on the roster include forward Marek Dolezaj and center Bourama Sidibe. This ruling means that instead of this season being their final one in Orange, both have the option of coming back for another year and would not count towards the 2021-22 scholarship limit. That is the simplistic impact. Beyond that it gets more complicated with a couple variables.

College basketball has players who leave early to pursue their professional aspirations after every season. Syracuse has had their share of such players over the last several years, including Donte Greene, Jonny Flynn, Dion Waiters, Tyler Ennis, Tyler Lydon, Malachi Richardson, Chris McCullough, Jerami Grant, Wes Johnson, Michael Carter Williams, Tyus Battle, Oshae Brissett and Elijah Hughes. So which players leave early remain a variable that is nearly impossible to predict.

After the 2021-22 season, Buddy Boeheim and Alan Griffin would have exhausted their eligibility. Now they have the option of staying for one more year, the 2022-23 campaign. It seems more likely that Buddy is around that long than it does Griffin, who may decide to turn pro with one or two strong seasons.

It's a sight for sore eyes.

Central New York's first look at Syracuse Men's Basketball in action since March.

It's the first practice for the SU Men's Hoops team, ahead of what promises to be such a unique season ahead.

In the pictures and video SU sent out you can see a much bigger Buddy Boeheim starring with his backcourt mate Joe Girard III.

The first practice always allows fans to see the team's newcomers including Illinois transfer Alan Griffin who promises to be a featured player in the Orange attack.

Syracuse features several freshmen players as well including Kadary Richmond who is drawing rave reviews with a versatile skill set at 6'7". Woody Newton and Frank Anselem provide depth in the front court, too.

There are the normal 2020 sights including coaches in masks, but it's all in hopes of making it to the first goal of the season.

Getting to that opener in 42 days on November 25th.

An official schedule is not yet released but we do know that Syracuse will play 20 ACC games and seven non-conference matchups starting the night before Thanksgiving.

Report: UNC to Open Men's Basketball Season on Nov. 25 Against College of Charleston - Chapelboro.com (chapelboro.com; Trendel)

While the Tar Heels basketball programs officially opened their first practices for the upcoming season on Wednesday, the men’s program may soon learn what opponent they’ll be facing first.

According to Ross Martin of Inside Carolina, the UNC men’s basketball team will open its season on Nov. 25 at the Smith Center against College of Charleston.

The NCAA previously announced Nov. 25 was the earliest possible date competition this season could begin.

UNC is also scheduled to play three games in the Maui Invitational from Nov. 30 – Dec.2 in Asheville, where it was moved due to COVID-19.

Those four games are the only games that have been confirmed to this point, as many logistics for the season are still being determined. It is expected that UNC and Ohio State will meet as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, while the ACC is looking to once again hold a 20-game conference schedule.

UNC Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham has said that the Tar Heels are hoping to schedule seven non-conference games for the 2020-2021 season.

In 2019-2020, UNC finished 14-19 with a 6-14 record in conference play.

Halloween in the 80s: Smurfs, Madonna, the Hulk. Who inspired the most popular costumes of the decade? (PS; $; Croyle)

There are few more important decisions a child will make during the year then what they are going to dress up as for Halloween.

Whether using a store-bought costume or making something at home, what they choose says a lot about themselves and their interests.

In the 1980s, Halloween became big business, and people spent big bucks on costumes for their children and themselves.

A glance through the archives of the Post-Standard found that many of the most popular choices reflected what was hot in the popular culture at the time.

Mr. T, Madonna, the Smurfs, Strawberry Shortcake, Star Wars and Lou Ferrigno’s Incredible Hulk were all big during the decade.

Here is a year-by-year list of the most popular Halloween looks of the 1980s.
