Welcome to Fibbonacci Day!

November 23—or 11/23—is the date of Fibonacci Day because the first series of numbers in the Fibonacci sequence are 1, 1, 2, and 3. The sequence is created by adding the previous two numbers to get the third number, so it begins as follows: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, and 144. Commonly studied in high school and college classes, it can be described with the mathematical equation Xn+2 = Xn+1 + Xn.

The Fibonacci sequence can be visualized by viewing a logarithmic spiral called the Fibonacci spiral. The spiral is made by using tiling squares with consecutive Fibonacci numbers, where an arc is drawn connecting the opposite corners of each tile and then into the next tile. The numbers of the Fibonacci sequence approximate the golden ratio, an irrational number that goes to infinity, and the Fibonacci spiral approximates the golden spiral.

Welsh: Syracuse basketball poised for 'deep' NCAA Tournament run - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)


While most national publications don’t have Syracuse as a factor this season in college basketball, ESPN and SNY’s Tim Welsh sees things differently. With the Orange opening its 2020-21 season this Friday, I chatted with the former Iona and Providence coach on this week’s The Juice on the Cuse podcast.

Welsh likes what he seems from Syracuse’s returning players, and believes that the team is built for a deep NCAA Tournament run.

“Just the experience, they played so many minutes last year, that group,” Welsh said. “This could be a special year for this group because of all of the experience and the success they had at the end of last year.”

To be sure, Syracuse is returning four of its five starters, though the one missing starter, Elijah Hughes, was the ACC’s leading scorer at 19.0 points per game. He was taken with the 39th pick in the NBA Draft last week.

But Welsh is bullish on Hughes successor, Illinois transfer Alan Griffin, and seems him picking up where Hughes left off.

“He’s a good player; he reminds me of Elijah Hughes in a lot of ways,” Welsh said. “He’s a good shooter. He’s a slashing forward. He can play multiple positions out there.”

All of that leads to good things ahead for this year’s team.

“I think Syracuse this year is a deep that can go deep into the Tournament,” Welsh said. “I think they’re a second weekend team and maybe beyond that.”

SYRACUSE BASKETBALL SCHEDULE REVIEW

Syracuse finished the 2019-20 season at 18-14. They won their last game of the season, a blowout victory over North Carolina in the ACC Tournament. The rest of the ACC Tournament, and subsequently all postseason basketball including the NCAA Tournament, was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Syracuse was playing its best basketball of the season at that time.

During the offseason, there were not many departures. The main loss was forward Elijah Hughes, who elected to forego his final season at Syracuse in order to turn pro. Hughes was selected in the second round of the NBA Draft with the 39th overall selection by the New Orleans Pelicans. He was then traded to the Utah Jazz.

Position Preview: Guards (SI; McAllister)

Projected Starters

Joe Girard: Girard was thrown into action as a true freshman due to Jalen Carey's injury. He responded well, averaging 12.4 points and 3.5 assists per game. Not too shabby for a true freshman point guard. Now, Girard is stronger, has that experience from last season and should be improved. He only shot 32% from three last year, but he is tremendous confidence and range. That number should improve. In fact, Girard's game overall should be more efficient as he develops.

Buddy Boeheim: Boeheim improved his scoring, shooting, passing and defense as a sophomore. He went from 6.8 points to 15.3 points per game. His shooting improved overall, including three point shooting that increased from 35% to 37% with more volume. At 6-6, he has size at the top of the zone. Word out of practice is that Buddy is stronger, has worked on other areas of his game including taking defenders off the dribble and working on his lateral quickness defensively. Should those come to fruition, Buddy will be quite the force for Syracuse. He is one of the best shooters in the ACC, and improved defense will take his overall game to the next level. The ability to drive more consistently, which improved quite a bit from his freshman year to last season, will make him even more difficult to defend.

Projected Starters

Alan Griffin: Griffin transferred in from Illinois and will move into the staring lineup in place of the departed Elijah Hughes. Griffin brings elite outside shooting along with strong rebounding to the Syracuse roster. The biggest knock on him at Illinois was his ball handling, but buzz from Syracuse practice is that he has shown great strides in that area. At Illinois, Griffin was one of their key offensive sparks off the bench. His role at Syracuse will be much more expanded.

Marek Dolezaj: Dolezaj has been the swiss army knife at Syracuse thus far in his career. He does a little bit of everything from passing to rebounding to scoring. Dolezaj's biggest fault has been his lack of strength, which hurts his ability to defend inside. Word out of Syracuse is that he has gotten bigger and stronger, which will only help him on both ends of the floor. When he is aggressive offensively, he can be a versatile weapon.

Projected Starter

Bourama Sidibe: Sidibe had an up and down 2020-21 season. He struggled with foul trouble for much of the year, but really came on strong down the stretch of the season. On the season overall, he averaged six points, 7.6 rebounds, 1.4 blocks and 1.3 steals per game. Over the last six games, he bumped those up to 9.8 points, 11.7 rebounds, 2.7 blocks and 2.3 steals. He can give Syracuse productivity like those last six games over the course of an entire season, he makes them a complete different team.

Key Reserves

Jesse Edwards: Edwards showed flashes last season of being a skilled offensive big. An offseason of development, including studying the zone, gives him the potential to be a key reserve to spell Sidibe either for rest or foul trouble. The key for Edwards is to be more physical and not get pushed around inside.

Frank Anselem: A 6-10, 210 pound freshman center, Anselem has been impressive during practice. He is athletic, can really jump and has tremendous potential on both ends. It is always difficult for true freshman bigs to master the zone, which is the key to consistent playing time.

How Many Will Make Syracuse Basketball's Rotation? (SI; McAllister)

The stigma around Syracuse basketball and head coach Jim Boeheim is that he only plays six or seven guys while most other programs play nine or ten. There is some exaggeration there, as most teams do not go that deep as part of their regular rotation. That said, which players will crack the Syracuse rotation during the 2020-21 campaign?

The starters will undoubtedly be Joe Girard, Buddy Boeheim, Alan Griffin, Marek Dolezaj and Bourama Sidibe. That is five. Your key reserves are Kadary Richmond in the back court and Quincy Guerrier at forward. That gives you seven players who are essentially guaranteed to get minutes.

Coach Boeheim has said during preseason interviews he envisions playing eight or possibly nine guys. Eight makes sense as someone will have to spell Sidibe, and he does not like putting Dolezaj in the middle for extended minutes as he gets pushed around in there. That means one of Jesse Edwards, Frank Anselem or John Bol Ajak will see time at center as Sidibe's primary backup.

Syracuse Basketball Breakout Candidates (SI; McAllister)

Alan Griffin: Griffin was a solid contributor off the bench at Illinois, and was one of the most coveted players on the transfer market this offseason. So his name is known across college basketball to those who cover the sport and die hard fans. The casual observer, however, may not be as familiar. Griffin has the potential to have a monster year where he becomes a recognizable name to the casual fan. Griffin can really shoot and is a natural scorer. With other threats around him, and a featured role, he could burst onto the national scene.

Bourama Sidibe: Sidibe finished the 2019-20 season strong, averaging essentially a double double over the last six games. If he can remain that guy with that level of productivity including blocking nearly three shots per game, he will become one of the more talked about bigs in the ACC. It may even get him All ACC consideration with those kind of numbers. The more he can stay out of foul trouble, the more likely it is he can be that productive and that efficient. He has worked hard in the offseason and put on weight to add strength to battle against conference foes.

Where paused Syracuse basketball stands 5 days before opener (247sports.com; Bailey)

Syracuse basketball remains on pause five days before its season opener against Bryant. While head coach Jim Boeheim left isolation on Friday, the team has not participated in basketball-related activities since Boeheim and an undisclosed player tested positive for Covid-19 last Sunday. An SU Athletics spokesperson said that he believes the pause will continue on Monday, but this remains a fluid situation without a set return-to-activities date.

Boeheim has told multiple media outlets over the last few days that he expects his team to be ready to play on Friday. Syracuse practiced and prepared for the season without interruption for about four months, taking coronavirus-related precautions within the program including having every individual at practice wear chips that track how long each person is within close contact of another.

Boeheim said previously that he's hopeful the Onondaga County Health Department will look favorably upon that data.

Syracuse Basketball: ACC, Big East, Big Ten battle for Donovan Clingan (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball 2022 four-star target Donovan Clingan could decide in about a year.

Syracuse basketball offered a scholarship to 2022 four-star center Donovan Clingan back in August of 2019, one of the first high-major teams to offer the talented 7-foot-1 prospect.

Fast-forward to the present, and Clingan now boasts 17 Division I offers, according to a review of his bios on various recruiting Web sites. His most recent offer is from Big Ten Conference member Ohio State.

The Buckeyes, by the way, secured a commitment a little more than a week ago from another Orange target in the 2022 class, four-star shooting guard Roddy Gayle Jr. Gayle, a junior out of Lewiston-Porter High School in Youngstown, N.Y., had the ‘Cuse in his final six before picking Ohio State.

Clingan is a junior at Bristol Central High School in Bristol, Conn., and runs on the AAU circuit with the Boston-based Team Spartans. One of his AAU teammates is 2023 wing Gavin Griffiths, who recently landed his own offer from Syracuse basketball.

Syracuse basketball faces extremely stiff competition in the recruiting bout over 2022 four-star Donovan Clingan.

Besides the Orange and the Buckeyes, Clingan’s other offers are from Iona, Wake Forest, South Carolina, Michigan State, Virginia Tech, Maryland, Yale, Rutgers, Notre Dame, Boston College, Iowa, Georgetown, Providence, Connecticut and Massachusetts.
