Welcome to Cyber Monday!

Cyber Monday takes place on the Monday after Thanksgiving, and is the largest online shopping day of the year in the United States. The term was coined by Ellen Davis of the National Retail Federation, while working with Scott Silverman and others, at Shop.org. In 2005, shortly before Thanksgiving, Shop.org put out a press release highlighting the growing amount of sales that took place on the day. Research from 2004 had shown that the day was the 12th largest online shopping day of the year. After the term made its debut, it has been used as a marketing tool by retailers, and the public has embraced the day. As of 2017, sales have increased each year since its inception, transforming the day from the 12th largest online shopping day, to the largest. In 2006 there were $610 million of sales on the day, and in 2016 there were $3.45 billion in sales, marking the first time online sales had passed $3 billion on a single day in the United States. Half or more of the sales from the day are from work computers, suggesting that consumers still want to do more shopping after Black Friday, want to take advantage of the days' deals, or want to hide the gifts they are buying for family members.

Syracuse Basketball: Alan Griffin is as awesome as advertised (itlh; Adler)

Alan Griffin proved pretty darn stellar in his Syracuse basketball debut.

Coming into the 2020-21 season, Syracuse basketball coaches and national pundits alike raved about Alan Griffin, a junior small forward who transferred to the ‘Cuse from Big Ten Conference member Illinois.

On many occasions, we’ve noted how national commentators and journalists have ranked Griffin among the best transfers in the country, as far as pre-season prognostications go.

In his debut for the ‘Cuse on Friday afternoon, a one-point victory over Bryant inside the Carrier Dome, the 6-foot-5 Griffin definitely did not disappoint.

Besides throwing down a ridiculous dunk off a long alley-oop pass from sophomore point guard Joe Girard III, Griffin registered 17 points, an impressive 13 rebounds and three assists in 38 minutes of court time. His shooting numbers didn’t prove great, but Griffin will undeniably improve those percentages.

I have to admit that I was a little surprised that head coach Jim Boeheim had sophomore Quincy Guerrier in the starting line-up rather than Griffin, although it’s clear that both forwards will see a lot of run in 2020-21.

What we learned from Syracuse basketball's 85-84 win over Bryant - The Juice Online (the juice; Gustin)

Syracuse’s 85-84 nail-biting win by the Orange led to a sigh of relief for what could have been an embarrassing start to this pandemic-stricken season. After Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim tested positive for COVID-19, the Orange had only one practice leading up to its game against Bryant.

In a year to remember, the Orange’s season opener taught us key things that might foreshadow how the rest of the season will go.

As expected, COVID-19 is going to mess some things up.

The Orange had to take two weeks off following a positive test from both Boeheim and an unnamed player. Syracuse was able to sneak past Bryant, but the time off showed.

Syracuse seemed fatigued and came out cold following the time off while Bryant started with momentum and solid shooting from deep. Bryant guard Chris Childs of Bryant started the game 4-4 from three and finished 5-9 as the Bulldogs stormed out to a 51-44 halftime lead.

At one point in the second half, Bryant held a 12-point lead before the Orange rallied behind 20 points from Marek Dolezaj and 23 from Buddy Boeheim.

“You know we should have never played this game,” Boeheim said. “It’s 100 percent my fault.”

Syracuse Basketball: Practice or no practice, defense has work to do (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball allowed 84 points in its 2020-21 opener, and that won’t do.

Without question, a lack of practices leading up to its 2020-21 season opener at home against Bryant on Friday afternoon inside the Carrier Dome had a negative effect on Syracuse basketball.

Head coach Jim Boeheim said he shouldn’t have had his guys play the Bulldogs after everyone within the Orange program was forced to quarantine for two weeks following a pair of positive Covid-19 tests earlier this month, including one from Boeheim himself.

In all fairness, not practicing for nearly two weeks naturally hurt the ‘Cuse in this non-conference clash, as the Orange looked a bit winded and certainly struggled on defense.

That Syracuse basketball pulled itself together and registered a comeback from 13 points down in the second half to emerge with an 85-84 triumph is a testament to the squad’s character and resiliency. Boeheim said as much in his post-game press conference.

Bryant Head Coach Jared Grasso Rips Syracuse, Boeheim (SI; McAllister)

Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim said both during halftime and after his team's season opener against Bryant, which the Orange narrowly won 85-84, that the game should not have been played. He stated that the lack of practice (the program paused all activities after coach Boeheim tested positive for COVID-19) put his players at a disadvantage, but took responsibility for playing anyway.

"You cannot play basketball when you don't practice," Boeheim said after the game. "That's a fundamental thing that everybody knows. We were playing really well two weeks ago. Go on 14 days, the players kept themselves in OK shape. We practiced yesterday and some guys were dying. Then we get into a game against a really good team, a smart team, a well coached team, we couldn't run, we couldn't shoot...

"But this is my fault. We should never have played this game. We should've come back, practiced, played next week. Bryant couldn't really reschedule it. So, 100% my fault."

Syracuse Basketball: Frank Anselem enjoys competitiveness at center spot (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball freshman center Frank Anselem has a terrific attitude and tremendous upside.

Syracuse basketball freshman center Frank Anselem is hailed as a ridiculously talented athlete, although it remains to be seen whether he sees a lot of court time in the 2020-21 campaign.

That’s because the Orange has a fully stocked 13 scholarship players within its line-up in the present term, and that includes four centers. Those centers are the 6-foot-10 Anselem, along with senior and starter Bourama Sidibe, sophomore Jesse Edwards and redshirt freshman John Bol Ajak.

Sidibe, assuming he stays out of foul trouble and continues his strong play from the latter part of 2019-20, will assuredly get the most minutes at center in head coach Jim Boeheim’s rotation. That being said, Sidibe suffered a left-leg injury in the 2020-21 term opener, a one-point victory over Bryant on Friday. He was scheduled to have an MRI on Friday evening.

In restricted zones or not, CNY restaurants seeing fewer diners (PS; $; Cazentre)

Orange zone, yellow zone or no zone at all: Restaurants and bars across Central New York are reporting fewer customers willing to dine inside in the past few weeks.

It seemed to coincide with the creation of a restrictive yellow zone declaration in parts of Onondaga County two weeks ago, and continued with this week’s expansion of that zone and the placement of Syracuse and areas close to it in an even more restrictive orange zone.

Yellow zones limit tables to no more than four people, while the orange zone prohibits indoor dining altogether (only outdoor seating and to-go order are allowed).

But even places outside the zones are feeling the effect.

“I don’t think it matters where you are,” said Amy Colclough, a co-owner of the Brick-n-Barrel gastropub on the Van Buren side of the village of Baldwinsville, just outside of either zone. “You’re not seeing crowds. People are just being careful about going out.”

So far, Brick-n-Barrel doesn’t seem to picking up extra business from restaurants in the restricted areas, including those on the Lysander side of Baldwinsville, which is in the yellow zone.
