Welcome to National Sock Day!

National Sock Day was started by Pair of Thieves, an apparel company that sells socks, in order "to warm our toes with the commemoration of two toe-tapping historical events" that happened on today's date. First, the holiday commemorates the closing of the first revival of the Broadway musical On Your Toes, on December 4, 1954. A Lorenz Hart and Richard Rodgers production, On Your Toes first debuted in 1936 and was known for its incorporation of ballet. Following its 1950s revival, it was brought back again in the 1980s. The second "toe-tapping historical event" that the holiday commemorates is the final concert by the mother-daughter singing duo of Naomi and Wynonna Judd—the Judds—at the Murphy Center in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, on November 4, 1991. Wynonna went on to a solo career, and the duo sometimes reunited, most notably for a tour in 2010, but the 1991 concert is still considered to be their final bow.

Richmond Puts Together Stellar Performance in First Start (SI; McAllister)

Due to contact tracing as a result of a positive COVID-19 case within the Syracuse men's basketball program, Buddy Boeheim missed the Orange's 75-45 win over Niagara Thursday night. Without Buddy, true freshman Kadary Richmond stepped into the starting lineup for the first time in his very young Syracuse career, and he put together a memorable performance.

Richmond received considerable buzz in the offseason about his ability, skill set and potential. He flashed some of that in the season opening win against Bryant despite not playing in the second half. No Buddy meant Kadary had to play considerable minutes, and he did just that.

The 6-5 guard put on a show while leading the team in minutes. Richmond was stellar at the top of the zone, using his length to be disruptive and force turnovers. In transition, Richmond showed excellent court vision and delivered perfect passes to set up teammates for easy buckets. Attacking the rim, Richmond both finished and set up others.

Syracuse, minus two contributors, whips Niagara (Reuters.com; FLM)

Quincy Guerrier posted career highs of 23 points and 13 rebounds for his second double-double and Syracuse used a decisive first-half run to pull away and coast to its 10th straight win against Niagara, 75-45, on Thursday at the Carrier Dome.

Syracuse (2-0) played without Buddy Boeheim, who will miss the next two games as well due to COVID-19 contact tracing after scoring a team-high 23 points in the opener against Bryant. The Orange also played without 6-10 senior center Bourama Sidibe, who tore his meniscus in the opener and will be out four weeks.

Marcus Hammond had eight points, 10 rebounds and three steals but shot 3-of-13 for Niagara (0-1), which had to pause all basketball activities Nov. 9 following a COVID outbreak on campus and just returned to practice within the past week.

Guerrier, who had 15 points and 13 rebounds against Bryant, shot 9-of-10 from the floor, hit his fourth career 3-pointer and added four offensive rebounds.

Freshman Kadary Richmond replaced Boeheim in the lineup and contributed 16 points, seven rebounds, six assists, four steals and three blocked shots.

Syracuse men's basketball moves to 2-0 after beating Niagara 75-45 (thenewshouse.com; Hertel)

Despite missing nearly half the bench, Syracuse’s young players came out strong and defeated Niagara 75-45.

Notably missing from Thursday’s game was Buddy Boeheim, who was suspected to be the Syracuse player that recently tested positive for coronavirus, although dad and coach Jim Boeheim stated postgame that Buddy had not yet tested positive. Seven additional players were not present, identified as possible exposures through contact tracing, leaving just ten players taking the court for Syracuse.

While the Orange lost a significant portion of their team, there was a familiar face on the opposing bench in Thursday’s game. For Niagara head coach Greg Paulus, the last minute addition of his team to Syracuse’s schedule meant a homecoming of sorts. In 2009, as Syracuse football’s starting quarterback, Paulus led his team to an overtime loss against Minnesota in front of 48,617 fans. On Thursday, he returned to lead the Purple Eagles against his alma mater in front of exactly zero fans.

The missing pieces changed the playing landscape for the Orange, who saw freshman guard Kadary Richmond step up off the bench, starting in place of Buddy Boeheim, and Quincy Guerrier spend more time in the backcourt.

It took time for play to get underway. After winning the initial faceoff, play was blown dead while Joseph Girard III dribbled up court due to a failure to start the shot clock. Guerrier put up the first points of the game, sinking a layup for two and scoring on the extra penalty point.

Why Syracuse basketball didn't shut down after new positive (247sports.com Bailey) The first time a Syracuse basketball player tested positive for Covid-19, the program shut down all activities for two weeks. Three weeks ago, an undisclosed player as well as head coach Jim Boeheim, tested positive, leading to a 14-day break in practice that ended the day before the team's season opener.

After the Orange came back from a double-digit deficit to beat Bryant 85-84 on Friday, Boeheim made pointed comments about the state of contact tracing in college basketball. He said the season would be "destroyed" if a small number of positives led to programs shutting down midseason.

Six days later, SU Athletics announced Thursday afternoon that another player had tested positive for Covid-19 and several others would have to quarantine due to contact tracing. Boeheim explained what happened after Syracuse's 75-45 win over Niagara: a walk-on is believed to have contracted the virus during a trip home and five SU players, including Buddy Boeheim, were within six feet of him for longer than 10 minutes at practice on Saturday.

The obvious question: why no two-week shutdown this time?

Boeheim didn't give a complete answer when asked directly by a reporter, but he did provide details during his postgame press conference that piece together some of the picture. After practicing on Saturday, he said the team was off from Sunday to Tuesday before returning to the court on Wednesday.

Duke Basketball Announces Schedule Changes - Duke University (goduke.com)
The Duke men's basketball program announced Thursday that its game versus Gardner-Webb, originally set for Wednesday, Nov. 25 as the season opener, has been rescheduled for Saturday, Dec. 19 at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

The matchup was postponed following a positive COVID-19 test within the GWU program. The rescheduled game tips at 2 p.m. ET on ACC Network Extra. Additionally, Duke's game versus Elon on Sunday, Dec. 6 is postponed due to COVID-19 protocols at Elon.

Duke's updated schedule also includes times and TV designations that have been released by the ACC for the conference slate.

The No. 6 Blue Devils (1-1) host Bellarmine (0-0) Friday at Cameron Indoor Stadium at 7 p.m. ET on the ACC's Regional Sports Networks including Fox Sports South.
ACC Roundup - NC State’s Impressive So Far (SBR; King)
In Wednesday night’s ACC action, Virginia Tech, nipped VMI, NC State ripped UMass-Lowell 90-59, Syracuse ruined Niagara’s visit 75-45 and Florida took out BC 90-70.

Maybe a letdown was inevitable for the Hokies. Whatever happened, the Keydets pushed Virginia Tech. Mike Young was honest afterwards, saying that “I was scared as hell. Doggone, it was like we were shooting at a dime up there instead of a rim.”

Well give him credit for being colorful too.

Our favorite ACC rebounder, Tyrece Radford, had six here including four offensive. Teammate Keve Aluma had a double-double with 17 and 12. Mike Young must be thrilled to have a functional big man.

Cam Hayes is looking like one of the better ACC freshmen: so far he has 16 assists and two turnovers as NC State’s point guard. That’s pretty solid.

State’s playing good defense too. The Pack forced 19 turnovers here after getting 19 against North Florida and 32 - not a typo - against Charleston Southern.

That’s 70 in three games for a 23.3 average per game.

State’s also winning by an average of 33.3 ppg. Obviously it’s not ACC-level competition but Virginia is winning by 20 ppg and UNC by 15.3. We’re just saying keep an eye on the Pack.

If you’re looking for a possible flaw, try free throw shooting: State hit just 10-18 here. That could hurt in a tight game.

Syracuse had one positive test in a walk-on that saw five players sit out, including Buddy Boeheim.

Quincy Guerrier had a hot game, shooting 9-10 and pulling down 13 boards. Syracuse had a huge advantage on the boards at 51-21.

Freshman Kadari Richmond had 16 points and seven boards in his first start.

Greg Paulus says he found out about the positive test right before the game.

Liverpool burger joint to close, a coronavirus victim; last call for the Heart Stopper (PS; $; Moriarty)
Village Burger in Liverpool is becoming the latest victim of the coronavirus pandemic. The popular burger joint will close permanently on Saturday.

Owner Art Silva said the pandemic has cut sales in half, prompting him to call it quits after nearly 10 years in business. With him and his wife Kathye at retirement age, they plan to move South to be closer to their children, a grandchild and, soon, a second grandchild.

“Business has been tough, obviously,” Silva said. “And my landlord’s not working with me to do anything, and I’m building up a big owe to him. Thirdly, I reached 65 and my son down in South Carolina has a 15-month-old, and they’ve got another one on the way. My other son is in North Carolina, and my daughter’s going to be moving down to South Carolina, so I don’t have any family left up here to continue the business.”

Silva opened the business in a former McDonald’s at 920 Old Liverpool Road in February 2011, featuring half-pound burgers available in 17 varieties, plus a special burger of the week. Among its offerings is the Heart Stopper, a deep-fried burger stuffed with mozzarella cheese and topped with bacon and onion rings.

Syracuse.com crowned Village Burger the champion of its first-ever Best of CNY Burger Battle in 2012. It’s also known for its haddock dinners and clam chowder.
