Welcome to National Pass Gas Day!

Passing gas—everyone does it. The technical term for the gas that builds up is flatus, and when someone passes it out of their body we say they have flatulence. That's a nice way of putting it—most people just call it farting. The word "fart" was thought up in 1632; it means "to send forth wind from the anus," and comes from the Old English word "feortan," which means "to break wind." Farts can travel at speeds of about 10 feet per second, almost 7 miles per hour. On average, people fart about 14 times a day, producing enough gas to fill up a balloon. This means everyone should have multiple opportunities to fully celebrate National Pass Gas Day today.

It is fitting that yesterday was Bean Day, because people often fart after eating beans. Other foods that are flatulence enablers include cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, eggs, and dairy products. Pressure builds up while foods such as these are broken down and digested in the colon, and it is released by passing gas.

Syracuse blows 18-point lead, falls to Pittsburgh - Pickin' Splinters (pickinsplinters.cimn; Cifonelli)

Pittsburgh only led for 8.2 seconds in its game at Syracuse, but those 8.2 seconds were the final ones. Au’diese Toney tipped in a missed three by Ithiel Horton that gave Panthers a 61-60 lead and sealed a comeback victory.

The Panthers made two separate comebacks in the contest, with Pittsburgh trailing by 16 with 11 minutes left in the game. Syracuse also held an 18-point advantage with four and a half minutes remaining in the first half. Pittsburgh was down by 14 at the half and cut the deficit to four before the Orange began to pull away again.

According to Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim, the team’s collapse was a result of the team shooting 36.7 percent (22-for-60) from the field in the game.

“Obviously. we depend a lot on shooting,” Boeheim said. “We started off the game making shots, got the same shots the whole game, but we didn’t make them. Our defense was pretty good, solid. But we depend on making jump shots and we haven’t really made them.”

After Pittsburgh got the game to four in the second half, the Orange were able to extend the lead back out because of Robert Braswell. Braswell knocked down three triples over a two-minute span, which gave him four threes in the game.

Pittsburgh shot just 22.2 percent (6-for-27) from the field in the first half. The Panthers scored 18 points in the half, but turned on the jets in the second half. Pittsburgh made 44.7 percent (17-for-38) of its second half field goals, including six of the team’s seven made threes in the game.

Postgame Reaction from Pitt's 'Roadkill' Win over Syracuse (pittsburghsportsnnow.com; Saunders)

In a town known culinarily for its famous Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, Pitt decided instead to feast on some roadkill on Wednesday in Syracuse, coming back from an 18-point deficit to beat the Orange, 63-60.

Roadkill is what the Panthers are calling it this season when they go on the road and get a victory, point guard Xavier Johnson said after the win.

“I like to call it roadkill, because, you go on the road and get a win and that just kills the other team’s vibe,” Johnson said.

Whatever they’re calling it, the Panthers are doing a lot more of it this season. The win at Syracuse’s Carrier Dome is the third away from home this season at Pitt, following victories at Northwestern and Miami for a 3-0 start to the Panthers’ road slate.

Pitt was 2-9 away from home in 2019-20, with one of the wins coming at low-major Robert Morris. In Jeff Capel’s first season, the Panthers were 0-11 on the road.

“The last last few years, we haven’t won too many road games,” Johnson said. “This year from experience, you kind of know what it takes now.”

Twitter Reaction to Pitt’s Improbable Win Over Syracuse (pittsburghsportsnow.com; Vukovcan)

Pitt entered today’s game with seemingly very little to win.

They were on the road at Syracuse without their leading scorer Justin Champagnie and three other players (Nike Sibande, John Hugley and Noah Collier) because of COVID-19 protocols.

Despite these obstacles and being 11.5 point underdogs, the Panthers battled back from a 18-point deficit to defeat Syracuse, 63-60, to earn an their 6th win of the season.

Crazy Comeback !!! #H2P

Another road win! Quarantine, limited practices, down 4 players, down 14pts… our guys didn’t lean on any excuses. Show up & compete #roadkill #H2P https://t.co/Vxn5EnC7eR

Syracuse Basketball: Five-star Brandon Huntley-Hatfield ‘high on’ Orange (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball appears in strong shape with 2022 five-star Brandon Huntley-Hatfield.

A few days ago, I penned a column in which I expressed a good feeling about the possibility of 2022 five-star power forward Brandon Huntley-Hatfield ultimately selecting Syracuse basketball.

Well, Huntley-Hatfield boasts an ultra-competitive top six, however, he has some really nice things to say about the Orange, and ‘Cuse fans should feel elated about the potential of him wearing a SU uniform as part of the 2022 cycle.

The 6-foot-9 Huntley-Hatfield, a junior at Scotland Campus in Scotland, Pa., is a consensus top-10 prospect in his class, according to all of the main recruiting services, and he’s also the No. 1 power forward in this cycle.

Should he choose Syracuse basketball, that will provide the ‘Cuse with an opportunity to build an extremely talented 2022 class around him.

Huntley-Hatfield has a half-dozen finalists of Syracuse basketball, along with Ole Miss, Kansas, Wake Forest, Tennessee and Auburn. He recently held a Zoom call with Orange coaches, and all signs indicate that it went quite well.

Beltway Basketball Beat: Maryland, Georgetown face early 2021 tests | WTOP (wtop.com; Preston)

Would you rather have a messy season or no season at all?

...
Georgetown (3-6) at Syracuse (6-1), Saturday at 8 p.m. (ESPN2)

What was once the Big East’s signature rivalry (the two schools combined for nine of the first 13 tournament winners and either the Hoyas or the Orangemen played in the championship game in 14 of 15 years from 1980-94) and a noontime staple on CBS is now a nonconference affair that will be going up against the Washington Football Team’s first playoff game in five years.

But there are those who still know what time it is, and those who look down their nose at a school that was once represented by character called “The Dome Ranger” (energetic and fun but not as cool as Jack the Bulldog).

Only three Hoyas on this year’s roster played in last season’s win over SU in DC, and this year’s team has had issues scoring (10th in the 11-team Big East) as well as defending (9th in the conference). Syracuse’s lone loss thus far came at Rutgers (and everyone knows the RAC is a tough place to play) but the Orange haven’t played since Dec. 19 due to COVID-19 concerns.

One wonders about rust for Syracuse and the ability to win on the road for Georgetown. Meanwhile, coach Patrick Ewing’s team has lost both of their games away from McDonough Arena this winter.

Eric Devendorf On A Mission To Give Back to Small Businesses (localsyr.com)

There’s no question that Eric Devendorf was an impact player for the Syracuse Orange, and now his work to help small businesses is leaving a formidable impression on so many in Central New York.

Devendorf started a GoFundMe campaign to help the community after learning about many small businesses struggling to make ends meet. His initial goal to raise $50,000 happened almost instantly and now he’s on a mission to raise $75,000.

Once the money is raised, guidelines will be put in place so businesses can qualify, he adds.

A Pitiful Day: SU loses to Pitt 63-60 (Brent Axe recap) (PS; $; Axe)

As one of the darkest days in American history unfolded about six hours away in Washington D.C., the Syracuse University basketball team got back on Jim Boeheim Court at the Carrier Dome on Wednesday afternoon.

The circumstances were odd enough as the Orange were once again playing in an empty Carrier Dome.

Syracuse had 18 days in between games as another COVID-related pause, this one caused by a positive test in the University at Buffalo program shortly after a game at the Dome on December 19, caused three Syracuse games to be postponed.

Florida State was supposed to be Syracuse’s opponent on Wednesday but had to bow out due to its own COVID issues. A game scheduled for Feb.13 against Pitt was moved up to Wednesday.

Struggling CNY restaurant in a Cuomo ‘orange’ zone: ‘It’s a losing battle here’ (PS; $; Cazentre)

Four years ago, Shelly Skripnichuk brought one of Central New York’s oldest and last German restaurants back to life.

Now, the lights are off again at Danzer’s German & American Gasthof at 153 Ainsley Drive in Syracuse. It’s been closed since late November, just after Gov. Andrew Cuomo placed the city and some of its suburbs into an orange zone. Cuomo used rising Covid-19 cases to justify his order that restaurants in those areas shut down for indoor dining.

Skripnichuk doesn’t know when, or if, Danzer’s can reopen. She knows she’s losing money every day it remains closed.

“I still have to pay mortgage payments, utilities, insurance etc. ... not sure how much longer I will be able to hang in there,” she said. “I pray every day that I am able to put my staff back to work.”

Skripnichuk reached out to syracuse.com Wednesday after reading a story in which owners of other restaurants in the Syracuse orange zone talked about their efforts to convince Cuomo to lift the indoor dining restriction. At the least, they want a “level playing field” with nearby restaurants in parts of the county that can operate with fewer restrictions including limited indoor dining.

Nope. It closed quite a while ago. 10-15 years ago I think,
