Welcome to Tin Can Day!

Cans were invented as a solution for hunger in combat. The French Directory, serving the years when Napolean’s army fought battles in Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, and the Carribean, offered a 12,000 franc prize for a breakthrough in the preservation of food.

Nicholas Appert, a Paris resident and chef saw this opportunity and took it. Working for French nobility, he studied different methods of food preservation until he presented his creation to the Directory.

Champagne bottle preserved with cheese and lime was the idea he created built on previous preservation techniques. His factory progressed from bottles to glass containers and then eventually to cans. These preserves were shipped all over through the French navy.

Peter Durand decided he wanted to capitalize on the preservation of food by patenting it and intended on expanding even further from Appert’s idea by using tinplate.

Miami basketball hopes to continue momentum at Syracuse: Game information (caneswarning.com; Rubenstein)

The Miami basketball team will hope to build on the momentum they gained with a 78-72 victory over Louisville on Saturday when they travel to Syracuse on Tuesday. The Orange are coming off of a 96-76 loss at Pittsburgh on Saturday. Miami won 69-65 in overtime last year in Coral Gables.

Isaiah Wong continued his outstanding season with 30 points, seven rebounds and six assists in the victory over the Cardinals. Wong was supported by freshman forward Matt Cross who scored 16 making four of his six three-point attempts and transfer Elijah Olaniyi with 15 points.

Syracuse is led by guard Alan Griffin who scored eight against the Miami basketball team last season for Illinois and forward Quincy Guerrier. Griffin is averaging 16.7 points per game, 7.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists. Guerrier is averaging 16.5 PPG and 9.7 RPG. Jim Boeheim is utilizing his usual tight rotation for the Orange.

Six Syracuse players average over 20 minutes per game. Only two more reserves averaged over nine minutes per game. The Syracuse matchup zone continues to be elite defensively. Opponents shoot 40 percent against Syracuse which ranks 56th nationally and makes 29.7 percent of three-point attempts which is 54th nationally.

Syracuse looks for defense with Hurricanes up next (cbssports.com; FLM)

The Syracuse Orange, who play host to the Miami Hurricanes in an ACC game on Tuesday night, aren't in a good mood.

They can't be -- not after allowing a season-high in points on Saturday in a 96-76 loss at Pittsburgh. Syracuse (7-4, 1-3 ACC) allowed 64 second-half points.

"Defensively, that was probably the worst we've played since I've been here," said Jim Boeheim, who was named Syracuse's head coach in 1976. "Sixty-four points? Yea, that's a lot of points.

"We don't have any answers. We're playing the best group we can play. ... In the second half, we played no defense."

Meanwhile, injury-plagued Miami (6-6, 2-5) is in great spirits after knocking off Louisville -- ranked 16th at the time -- 78-72 on Saturday night.

Despite having just seven scholarship players available, Miami got a great effort from guard Isaiah Wong, who scored a career-high 30 points, including 21 in the second half.

Has Syracuse Forgotten its Roots? – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Bonaparte)

Syracuse’s patented 2-3 zone has been the beating heart of its basketball program ever since Jim Boeheim took over way back in the 70s. It became especially famed once the Big East became the best college basketball competition in the country. SU was known for its star power on the offensive end thanks to players like Leo Rautins, Rafael Addison, Pearl Washington, John Wallace and so on, and on defense, it’s always been the same thing, teamwork. Some guys have absolutely flourished in the zone, others have struggled. Though at the end of the day, the 2-3 epitomizes teamwork. It’s what made Syracuse so good back then and so good contemporarily. However with SU’s most recent struggles, notably the last half of basketball the Orange played in which they gave up 64 points to Pitt, it begs a question of where that prestige has gone. Have the Orange shifted to become an offensive-minded team? If so, why?

The last time Syracuse got close to college basketball glory was 2016. The team had it all, reliable scorers in Malachi Richardson and Trevor Cooney, a long, talented big man in Tyler Lydon and of course a leader, Michael Gbinije. That team didn’t exactly have the same offensive firepower of the ‘03 championship team or the ‘87 runner up. What it had was a solid unit on defense. Boeheim’s 2016 squad ranked 30th out of 351 defenses that season in points against. This season, as of writing this, Syracuse is 208th in that same statistic. Last year, 174th. Of course, last season we didn’t get to see whether SU had what it took to reach big dance due to COVID, but just 18 wins after the first game of the ACC tournament didn’t look promising.

Joe Girard or Kadary Richmond? Syracuse's point guards both struggling going into Miami game (10 things) (247sports.com; Shults)

After three straight Atlantic Coast Conference losses, it’s clear that Syracuse basketball has issues across the 2-3 zone. While the low-block defense has been horrendous, garnering attention without the physicality of senior center Bourama Sidibe, the top of the zone hasn’t been much better.

In Pittsburgh’s 96-76 win over the Orange on Saturday, the Panthers carved through SU's guards consistently. Syracuse logged just two steals, and at the other end, point guard Joe Girard finished with just two points on 0-for-4 shooting

"He hasn't played well overall,” head coach Jim Boeheim said after the game.

Earlier in the season, poor Girard play often led to more minutes for freshman Kadary Richmond. But as the season has progressed, opposing defenses have sagged on Richmond, urging the 6-foot-5 guard to shoot.

Syracuse Basketball: Love my Orange, but reality is this team isn’t good (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball has only played 11 games in the 2020-21 campaign, so making any grand, wide-ranging proclamations at this juncture is probably a tad premature.

However, based on what’s transpired for the Orange over the past few games, it’s safe to say that the ‘Cuse is a team that presently faces an abundance of challenges.

My passion for Syracuse basketball, no matter its record, will always remain at a high level, yet if I’m assessing things honestly right now, the Orange (7-4) is a pretty mediocre team.

The ‘Cuse, assuming it doesn’t have future game postponements amid the novel coronavirus pandemic, will have a bunch of opportunities to notch marquee victories in Atlantic Coast Conference competition.

Syracuse basketball, though, better turn things around – and fast – if it wants to salvage the 2020-21 term. That starts with a home date this Tuesday evening against Miami, which by the way has dealt with a lot of injuries to its roster, but the Hurricanes still managed to upset nationally ranked Louisville over the weekend.

The ACC is so topsy-turvy this season! And this tells me that the Orange, if it can regain some of its mojo, has the potential to still put forth a respectable 2020-21 stanza.

On The Block On Demand 1-18 (espnsyracuse; radio; Axe)

Brent starts the show reminding distressed Orange fans that the men’s basketball team can only do so much with the players that they have. Later, Brent talks about how the Bills have made it to the AFC Championship Game with their “just find a way” mentality.
