Welcome to Inauguration Day! Congrats Joe!

The inauguration of the president of the United States is a ceremony to mark the commencement of a new four-year term of the president of the United States. The inauguration takes place for each new presidential term, even if the president is continuing in office for a second term. Since 1937, it has taken place at noon EST on January 20, the first day of the new term, some 72 to 78 days after the presidential election, except for three occasions when January 20 fell on a Sunday. In those years, the presidential oath of office was administered on that day privately and then again in a public ceremony the next day, on Monday, January 21. The most recent presidential inauguration was held on January 20, 2017, when Donald Trump assumed office; the next is scheduled to take place on January 20, 2021, when Joe Biden will assume office.

Boeheim, Girard Lead Syracuse Basketball to Rout of Miami Hurricanes (nbcmiami.com)

Buddy Boeheim and Joe Girard, almost fully recovered from a bout of COVID-19, each scored a season-high 23 points to lead Syracuse to an 83-57 rout of Miami on Tuesday night.

It was the Orange's largest margin of victory in the series since an 81-52 home win on Dec. 12, 1993.

Boeheim and Girard combined for nine of the Orange's 10 3-pointers and seven of their 19 assists. Boeheim had his fourth game this season with at least 20 points and Girard reached the mark for the third time.

Quincy Guerrier added 18 points and a game-high eight rebounds for Syracuse (8-4, 2-3 Atlantic Coast Conference), which avenged last season’s 69-65 overtime loss at Miami.

Orange coach Jim Boeheim said after the game that both of his starting guards had been hit with the novel coronavirus.

“We didn't have Buddy for a bunch of games," coach Boeheim said of his youngest son, who with Girard had struggled of late. "I think Buddy's just starting to get his rhythm back a little bit from all the time out and having the COVID, the whole thing. I think he's getting it back. Both Joe and Buddy were out with it. They were sick.

"Everybody knows this happens and knows that they were (out), but then they expect them to come back and play like nothing ever happened. It just doesn't work that way. When Joe plays like that, we’re a different team.”

ACC Roundup - Syracuse Romps (DBR; King)

Sometimes it’s good to listen to your instincts. For instance, we should have listened to ours. We knew it was a mistake to pick Miami over Syracuse Tuesday night but we admire the guts they’ve shown with so many injuries.

Splat.

After starting slow and falling behind 11-2, Syracuse roared back and took a 36-22 lead into the half and kept expanding it until it got to 28. Miami fought back but by the end, Syracuse had it back to 28 before some garbage time scoring go it back down to 26.

Any way you look it it was a brutal beat-down.

Buddy Boeheim and Joe Girard, who have both had the Corona, put up 23 each.

Girard hit 8-15 and 5-9 from deep while Boeheim shot 9-16 and 4-8.

Miami had 17 turnovers to Syracuse’s eight and shot just 39.3 percent to 52.5 percent for the ‘Cuse. Syracuse also hit 10-25 from deep while Miami managed just 4-25 trying to shoot over Boeheim’s zone (of 56 attempts, 25 were behind the line).

Syracuse has a ways to go - for one, Marek Dolezaj, who has some real strong points, just can’t man the post at 6-10 and 200 lbs. The guy could eat 100 pounds of fatback for breakfast and he’d probably just lose weight. And he’s a senior! His body is always going to be thin and he does the best he can. But 200 lbs. just isn’t enough.

What are the head-coaching succession plans at Duke, North Carolina and Syracuse? (ESPN; $; Gasaway & Borzello)

In a move that might have escaped notice to some fans last week, Duke Blue Devils athletic director Kevin White announced he was stepping down at the end of the 2020-21 season, heralding a new and as yet unknown element of leadership for the game's most visible men's college basketball program.

Should the next Duke AD last 13 years in charge of the program, as did White, he or she will likely be confronted with helping identify a successor to Mike Krzyzewski, who turns 74 next month. ESPN's John Gasaway and Jeff Borzello discussed that potential succession plan, similar moves that will need to be made at North Carolina and Syracuse in the coming years, and other topics -- some hot and some beneath the radar -- from around the game.

Hurricane Relief: Syracuse basketball defeats Miami 83-57 (Brent Axe recap) (PS; $; Axe)

Hurricane Relief: Syracuse basketball defeats Miami 83-57 (Brent Axe recap) - syracuse.com
Tuesday was just what the doctor ordered for the Syracuse University men’s basketball team.

As it turns out, some recent struggles by two of its best players can be explained, in part, by a doctor.

Syracuse defeated Miami 83-57 on Tuesday night at the Carrier Dome, using a 23-3 surge in the first half to take the lead and never look back. SU improved to 8-4 overall and 2-3 in ACC play.

Fans who have been pounding Twitter and sports-talk radio begging Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim to play freshman guard Kadary Richmond and sophomore center Jesse Edwards more got their wish. Both Edwards and Richmond made a huge impact for the Orange in the blowout win.

Pittsburgh Basketball: 3 takeaways from monumental win over Duke Blue Devils (bustingbrackets.com; Freeman)

Just a few years ago, Pittsburgh Basketball went 0-18 in ACC play and hit rock bottom as a program. Plenty of changes were made, including at head coach. Former Panthers head coach Kevin Stallings was replaced by Duke assistant Jeff Capel, tasked with bringing the program back to national relevance and to become a contender in the ACC.

Fast forward to January 19th. Pittsburgh, after being relegated to playing on the ACC Network and local TV stations, were given the opportunity to play the Duke Blue Devils on ESPN at 9 pm. After beating Syracuse by 20 points last weekend, this game had legitimate NCAA Tournament implications for both teams.

Pittsburgh looked to have an advantage in the first half, leading after the 12-minute mark and pushing it towards double-digits at the halftime break. In the first few minutes of the second half, the Panthers led by as much as 15 and looked to blow Duke out the door. However, freshman Jalen Johnson, who just came back from a foot injury, went off for 24 points, 15 rebounds, and seven assists in 33 minutes off the bench before fouling out.

MBB: ACC Basketball Results - 1/20/21

Monday night

Florida State 78 @ Louisville 65

Three Seminoles (Gray, Wilkes and Evans) scored in double figures to pace the visitors to a win in the Yum Center.

Tuesday night

Miami (FL) 57 @ Syracuse 83

Wong scored 16 for the Canes, but it wasn't nearly enough as Girard poured in 23 to lead the Orange in the Dome.

Duke 73 @ Pitt 79

Make no mistake - the Panthers have a good basketball team - but I have to ask just what sport are the Blue Devils supposed to be good at this year?

Bottom Line:

It's really starting to look like the top four seeds in ACC men's basketball could be
  1. Virginia
  2. Virginia Tech
  3. Florida State
  4. Pitt
Don't try to tell me that was your preseason top four!

State of the Hoops - 1/20/21 (RX; HM)

State of the Hoops - 1/20/21

From Andy Katz' College basketball rankings
ACC Teams in Andy's "Power 36":
10. Virginia (19): If you saw Virginia beat Clemson then you know why the Cavaliers are back in the top 10.
18. Virginia Tech (27): The Hokies are now a firmly established as an ACC contender.
28. Louisville (23): The Cardinals slide back a bit after the loss at Miami.
29. Florida State (NR): The Seminoles are back in the Power 36 after a win over North Carolina.
35. Pitt (NR): The Panthers are one of the hottest teams emerging in the ACC.
Dropped out: No. 17 Clemson,... No. 33 Duke,...
Team of the Week: Virginia. The Cavaliers absolutely demolished the best defense in the country — Clemson — to move to 5-0 in the ACC. Yes, the Cavaliers are back to being the best in the ACC. Virginia, 9-2 overall, won 85-50. The Cavs were up at one point 18-2 and 33-9 with just under three minutes left. They held Clemson to its lowest output of the season and to just 21 percent from the field. Oh — and Virginia handled Notre Dame easily earlier in the week. Again, the Cavs are back and the team to beat in the ACC...

Jimmy Fallon pens funny ‘thank you’ notes to Syracuse, Buffalo Bills on ‘Tonight Show’ (PS; $; Herbert)

Jimmy Fallon pens funny ‘thank you’ notes to Syracuse, Buffalo Bills on ‘Tonight Show’ - syracuse.com
“The Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon wrote a funny “thank you” note to Syracuse, nearly a year after visiting Central New York for a Syracuse basketball game with Tom Brady and Julian Edelman.

Fallon’s shout-out to the snowy Salt City came during a segment Friday night called “Thank You Notes.” The late-night comedy star pretends to write silly cards as sentimental music plays in the recurring bit.

“Thank you, ice scrapers, for making me feel like an archaeologist uncovering an ancient Ford Focus in Syracuse,” he said with a smirk.

Fallon, Brady and Edelman were celebrity guests of local businessman Adam Weitsman at a February 2020 basketball game in the Carrier Dome, sitting courtside near Syracuse University coach Jim Boeheim. Fallon, who grew up south of Albany in Saugerties, previously showed love for Syracuse by featuring team mascot Otto the Orange on his show and shouting out former SU basketball player Rakeem Christmas, who famously wore No. 25 for the Orange.
