Welcome to Curmudgeons Day!

A curmudgeon is a cantankerous, difficult, and bad-tempered person, who is usually also an old man. They are celebrated on Curmudgeons Day, which takes place on the birthday of W.C. Fields, a comedian and actor who was known for his curmudgeonly demeanor. On Curmudgeons Day, people act as curmudgeons, celebrate curmudgeons they know, and celebrate W.C. Fields.

W.C. Fields was born as William Claude Dukenfield on January 29, 1880, in Darby, Pennsylvania, just outside of Philadelphia. He took on his new name when he began working in vaudeville in 1898. Throughout his career, he was known for portraying anti-social and cantankerous characters in his stage and screen roles, and his real-life persona wasn't too far removed from this demeanor. He was also known for his affinity for alcohol, which ultimately had a hand in his declining health and eventual demise at the age of 66. Today he is often placed in the same class as comedic luminaries Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton.

Syracuse’s center problem: How we got here and how to fix it (theathletic.com; $; Gutierrez)

This just in: Syracuse has a center problem. For years, the Orange’s weakest position has been the five spot. Since Rakeem Christmas graduated in 2015 — following a senior year in which he averaged 17.5 points and 9.1 rebounds per game and was a first-team All-ACC selection — SU has either not recruited the position at program expectations or failed to develop centers to their full potential. It’s a primary reason why Syracuse is 62-62 against conference opponents since 2014.

So it begs the question: How much better would Syracuse have been over the past half-decade with an average or above-average big man roaming the middle, protecting the rim and posing a scoring threat?

Syracuse has followed a national trend in relying on the 3-point shot at an increased rate. But the constant presence of the pick-and-roll is still at the heart of its offense. Utilizing bigs who act as an offensive threat makes defenses think harder about how to switch, and when. Centers help on the boards and diversify an offense. And they aid the back line of the 2-3 zone, which is designed to limit scoring at the rim. Yet SU is among the worst interior defensive teams in the country over the past two seasons, according to data from hoop-math.com.
