Welcome
to Carnival Day!

Today we celebrate carnivals, many of which are the traveling type, similar to nineteenth-century circuses; they may consist of amusement rides, food, games—both of chance and skill, thrill acts, and animal acts. These professional traveling carnivals take place at state and county fairs, or in smaller places like store parking lots. Some professional traveling carnivals are used by schools, churches, businesses, and other groups, but some of these groups may design less sophisticated carnivals on their own. For example, students at a school may organize and run a carnival at their school as a fundraiser, without the use of a professional carnival company. Carnivals are often held in the summer months, but there are winter carnivals as well.

The 1893 World's Columbian Exposition was an impetus for the start of traveling carnivals. It had the original Ferris wheel, and its Midway Plaisance had rides, games of chance, and sideshow entertainment including freak shows and burlesque. The name "midway" was adopted by county and state fairs as a name for the areas where sideshow entertainment took place. By 1902 there were 17 carnival companies; there were forty-six in 1905 and 300 in 1937.

Opponent preview: What to know about Georgia Tech (DO; Dabbundo)

Syracuse will play its final regular season road game when the Orange travel to Atlanta to take on Georgia Tech on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets have won three straight games in the Atlantic Coast Conference, including a road win at Virginia Tech in their last game. Saturday is the final opportunity for a SU Quadrant 1 win, based on the current NET rankings.

Here’s what to know about the Yellow Jackets before Syracuse (13-7, 7-6 Atlantic Coast) and Georgia Tech (12-8, 8-6) tip-off at 12 p.m. on Saturday:

All-time series

Syracuse leads 7-6.

Last time they played

Syracuse swept the season series with the Yellow Jackets in 2019-20, winning the second meeting in the Carrier Dome 79-72 in February. The Orange struggled to contain GT forward Moses Wright, who finished the game 14-of-17 from the field with 33 points.

SU won the game because it held the Yellow Jackets’ starting backcourt of Michael Devoe and Jose Alvarado to 19 points on 14 shot attempts. Elijah Hughes, Joe Girard III and Marek Dolezaj all tallied at least 15 points, with Hughes and Dolezaj eclipsing 20 in the victory.

The Orange forced 17 GT turnovers in the win in the Dome.

KenPom odds

Georgia Tech has a 67% chance to win, with a projected score of 76-71.

The Yellow Jackets report

From an overall efficiency perspective, the Yellow Jackets are the fourth-best offense that Syracuse will face this season. The other three top offenses — Duke, Virginia and Notre Dame — all found success against the Orange’s defense, especially from beyond the 3-point arc. Georgia Tech’s offense runs through two players, Alvarado and Wright. Wright is the third-best player in the conference this season based on efficiency, per KenPom. GT had a slow start with two bad nonconference losses to Mercer and Georgia State to open the season, but the Yellow Jackets have notched wins against Clemson, Florida State and Virginia Tech in conference play.

Beat writers all predict Syracuse to lose to Georgia Tech in last road game (DO; Staff)

After overcoming a 20-point deficit in the second half against Notre Dame, Syracuse (13-7, 7-6 Atlantic Coast) imploded in its 85-71 loss to Duke — lifting its season off the bubble in the wrong direction. The Orange now travel to Atlanta and play Georgia Tech (12-8, 8-6) on Saturday, who just knocked off No. 16 Virginia Tech.

Buddy Boeheim led all Syracuse scorers with 21 points against the Blue Devils, while Kadary Richmond chipped in 15 points, five rebounds and three assists. In their win against the Hokies, Moses Wright paced the Yellow Jackets with 26 points.

Here’s what our beat writers think will happen in McCamish Pavilion on Saturday.

Yellow Jackets torn me up
Georgia Tech 76, Syracuse 70

After how poorly Syracuse has played in its last two games — masking what had been a three-game winning streak — it’s tough to pick the Orange in any game against a top-tier ACC opponent going forward. And that’s exactly what Georgia Tech is: A top-tier ACC opponent. The Yellow Jackets have an extremely efficient offense, led by Wright and Jose Alvarado, and have positioned themselves as a legitimate threat in the conference tournament.

The Orange win this game if they take advantage of a rare rebounding advantage and convert missed shots into second-chance points, which are essential for keeping pace with Georgia Tech. But look for the struggles of Joe Girard III, Quincy Guerrier and Alan Griffin to continue, positioning SU without any Quadrant I wins at the end of the regular season.

Syracuse Orange v. Geogia Tech Yellow Jackets Prediction & Preview (2/27/21) - The Juice Online (the juice; Staff)

Brad Bierman

Season Record: 3-2

We distinctly remember covering the first-ever meeting between Syracuse and Georgia Tech in 1985, a virtual home game for the Yellow Jackets at the old Omni in Atlanta, a couple of miles from the Tech campus. A great old-school matchup between Pearl Washington and Rafael Addison versus Mark Price and John Sally that turned from Orange to Yellow in the second half.

That was a 70-53 second-round NCAA Tournament defeat in which Pearl would struggle with just seven points, and a year when the Big East ruled sending three teams to the Final Four.

The league’s 1985 success created a lot of envy within the Syracuse program, as for the seventh straight time during Jim Boeheim’s first nine years (two NIT’s), it would be one-and-done for the Orangemen in the NCAA Tournament.

During the ACC era the Orange hold a 5-4 edge while splitting the four games in Atlanta, but the task is tall this time around. Georgia Tech comes off perhaps its most crucial victory in Josh Pastner’s five years as head coach, dominating the second half in Tuesday’s 69-53 road win over No. 16 Virginia Tech.

Big man Moses Wright provided an ominous sign for SU’s frontcourt, scoring 17 of his 26 points after halftime and pulling down 10 boards. Wight’s dominance down low combined with torrid outside shooting (52 percent) and the pesky play of senior guard Jose Alvarado (13 points vs. Va. Tech), will keep the recently-maligned SU defense on its toes.

Jim Boeheim said Monday night that this game might be harder to win than that evening’s 14-point loss at Duke. We tend to agree with that sentiment because the Yellow Jackets are a veteran team sniffing an NCAA invite. Ga. Tech will improve on its current 8-3 home record with a 75-69 win over Syracuse.

Syracuse Basketball: Georgia Tech, playing well, looks like a tourney team (itlh; Adler)

To have any realistic chance of reaching the 2021 Big Dance, Syracuse basketball needs to pile up some victories as the Orange’s 2020-21 regular season wraps up, and the team prepares for the upcoming ACC Tournament.

On Saturday afternoon, the ‘Cuse (13-7, 7-6) will travel to Atlanta for a massive Atlantic Coast Conference showdown with a surging Georgia Tech squad.

Both the Orange and the Yellow Jackets (12-8, 8-6) are hovering in the middle of the ACC standings, and each team would certainly like to improve its positioning as the league’s post-season tournament inches closer to fruition.

Georgia Tech is competing at a really high level these days, and the ‘Cuse will undeniably have its hands full on Saturday, with these two squads scheduled to tip-off at 12 pm from McCamish Pavilion. The ACC Network will provide television coverage.

Through contests on Feb. 24, Syracuse basketball is No. 56 in the NET rankings, while the Yellow Jackets are a solid No. 38. Thus, this ACC clash represents a coveted quadrant-one opportunity for the Orange, and the ‘Cuse is in desperate need of notching its first quad-one achievement of 2020-21 to bolster its March Madness resume.

Additionally, Syracuse basketball is just 2-6 in road affairs so far in the present stanza, and picking up another triumph away from the Hill, and versus a quality foe, would prove huge.

Syracuse basketball has offered to numerous talented 2023 prospects (itlh; Adler)

Let’s have a look at the Syracuse basketball offers to 2023 high-school players at this juncture.

Syracuse basketball has one commit in its 2021 class, the Orange is pursuing a handful of top-flight talents in the 2022 cycle, and the ‘Cuse is also remaining active as far as its 2023 class is concerned.

To date, Syracuse basketball has offered scholarships to a half-dozen players in the 2023 cycle, according to recruiting services and high-school prospects’ social-media accounts.

Of course, since these players are only sophomores, it’s a safe assumption that the Orange will continue to pledge scholarship offers to a range of other 2023 prospects moving forward.

The most recent offer has gotten doled out to Blue Cain, a 6-foot-4 guard who attends Knoxville Catholic High School in Knoxville, Tenn., and scored a ridiculous 73 points in a game last season, according to reports. Other offers include from South Carolina, Howard and ETSU.

Another ‘Cuse 2023 target is five-star Elijah Fisher, a 6-foot-7 wing out of the Crestwood Preparatory College in Toronto, Ontario. Fisher, a top-five player in this cycle according to numerous recruiting services, has a ton of high-major offers.

A few weeks ago, Fisher spoke about some of the teams that he would like to visit when he’s able to, given the recruiting restrictions imposed by the NCAA due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Syracuse Basketball: 5-star Benny Williams stuffs stat sheet, analyst says (itlh; Adler)

At No. 15 nationally in the 2021 class, per , Syracuse basketball commit Benny Williams will arrive on the Hill later this year as one of the highest-rated recruits for the Orange in recent team history.

‘Cuse fans, myself included, cannot wait to see the 6-foot-8 forward don an Orange uniform, as Williams is a tremendously talented prospect as well as a passionate advocate for the Syracuse basketball program.

Williams, who is rated five stars according to several recruiting services, is having a strong senior campaign for the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.

Rob Cassidy, a national analyst for , recently caught some of the games at the IMG Academy Beach Blast, an event in which Williams competed.

In an IMG Academy battle with Rocktop Academy, a prep school located in King of Prussia, Pa., Williams tallied 24 points. His performance featured “a pair of 3-pointers and a couple of emphatic dunks,” according to Cassidy.

A national recruiting analyst is impressed by the evolving game of Syracuse basketball commit Benny Williams.

Cassidy took in a bunch of affairs at the IMG Academy Beach Blast, and then he doled out some awards. His honor for Williams is entitled, “Mr. Do It All.”

Cassidy notes that Williams is focused on “becoming a more well-rounded player and a better teammate this season.” The analyst adds, “Williams has absolutely stuffed the stat sheet each time I’ve seen him this year, and Friday’s game against Rocktop Academy brought more of the same.”

Who is the Syracuse Basketball GOAT? – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Bonaparte)

This past summer we at Orange Fizz made a top 100 list of Syracuse athletes. ACC Network just released a video titled, “Syracuse Basketball | Who is…the GOAT,” a discussion that spans across many sports and players now finds itself in Syracuse. It’s a good question, who is the greatest player to don Orange threads inside the Carrier Dome?

There are plenty of candidates that could fit this bill, let’s take a look at the players ACC Network deemed worthy of this conversation:

  • Pearl Washington (1983-86)
Accolades:
  • 1984 Big East Players of the Year
  • 3x First-Team All-Big East
  • 1986 Big East Tournament MVP
  • Consensus All-American (1986)
Pearl is definitely one of the first names that comes to mind when you think the greatest Syracuse athletes in history. He had iconic moments such as his buzzer-beating half-court shot that ran Boston College out of the Dome in ‘84, and was on top of his game when the Big East was thriving. Washington was conquering teams like Patrick Ewing’s Hoyas and St. John’s led by Chrus Mullin. It was a great time to be a fan of SU basketball, that’s thanks to the Pearl.
  • Sherman Douglas (1985-89)
Accolades:
  • 960 assists (1st in Syracuse History)
  • Consensus All-American (1989)
  • 2x First-Team All-Big East
  • 2x Big East Tournament MVP

Onondaga Bald Eagle Watch: Still lots of birds around the lake, but the large numbers won’t last (PS; Figuera)

The chances of seeing bald eagles on Onondaga Lake continues to be great going into this weekend, but the numbers of birds that can be easily spotted will likely be trending downward in weeks to come, according to a local Audubon chapter official.

Wednesday, volunteers from the Onondaga Audubon chapter counted 39 birds on the lake’s shores – most, if not all, at the lake’s southern end where there’s open water.

Last week, the volunteers counted 59 birds, said Alison Kocek, vice president of the group.

“Warmer weather and rain is on the way that might melt the lake ice and allow the birds to disperse again,” she said. “So now is a good time for people to get out and see the large congregations of eagles and waterfowl.”

Chris Lajewski, director of the Montezuma Audubon Center, has said Onondaga Lake is the largest winter roost of any urban area in the state.

The birds congregate each winter behind the mall on and around Murphy’s Island in the trees overlooking the open water near the county’s sewage treatment plant and the mouth of Onondaga Creek. The warm water coming out of the plant keeps the water open and attracts schools of gizzard shad and other fish, which the birds feed on.
