Syracuse basketball vs. Clemson: What to know (PS; $; Waters)

Syracuse will close out its irregular season with a home game against Clemson on Wednesday.

In a season full of postponed and canceled games due to the coronavirus pandemic, this game seems appropriate since it wasn’t on the original schedule.

Syracuse’s season finale was supposed to have been on Monday. The Orange beat North Carolina, 72-70, to keep alive its NCAA tournament hopes.

The Syracuse-Clemson game was tacked onto the schedule to make up for a game that had been scheduled for Jan. 12. When that game was postponed, Syracuse instead traveled to North Carolina.

Could freshman Frank Anselem be Syracuse’s next starting center? (DO; Emerman)

When Julius Smith first met Frank Anselem at his Georgia Stars AAU tryout in Atlanta in fall 2016, he saw a 6-foot-8 16-year-old brimming with promise. The Nigerian-born teenager had just started playing basketball — which brought him to the U.S. — two summers before.

Smith added Anselem to the team and worked to improve his skills.

“He couldn’t run or jump or catch or dunk or anything like that,” said Smith, who is also Anselem’s legal U.S. guardian. “He was real uncoordinated.”

At the start, teams would play “Hack-a-Franky,” intentionally fouling Anselem to put him on the free-throw line, where Smith estimates he shot 20%. But Anselem worked tirelessly, and by his third and final year with the Stars, he was the team’s best foul shooter, at 80%.

Anselem grew 2 inches and moved to Prolific Prep in California, proceeding to earn over 25 scholarship offers, including blue bloods Kentucky and Kansas.

Now at Syracuse, Anselem and his development could change the potential of the team’s center position. All year, Syracuse has scrambled to find depth at the position with Bourama Sidibe sidelined. Anselem has played the sport for fewer than six years, but he was still SU’s most coveted prospect coming out of high school.

Whether Anselem can grow into a key role for Syracuse down the road depends on how quickly he continues to learn and grow into his 6-foot-10, 210-pound body. Although the 2020-21 season’s been rocky for Anselem, the future of the position could hinge on his development.

“He’s got humongous upside,” Prolific Prep head coach Joey Fuca said.

Opponent preview: What to know about Clemson before regular-season finale (DO; Crane)

After picking up its first victory over a top-40 KenPom team in two years, Syracuse hosts Clemson in the Carrier Dome on Wednesday for its regular-season finale. The Tigers haven’t lost since the end of January, winning five-straight games and six of seven overall to launch back up the Atlantic Coast Conference standings.

A win over the Tigers would help boost the Orange’s NCAA Tournament resume, although a deep run in the conference tournament may be the only way to salvage a postseason bid. Syracuse (14-8, 8-7 Atlantic Coast) had an opportunity for a Quadrant 1 win earlier in the season, but it lost to Clemson at Littlejohn Coliseum in South Carolina.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Tigers (15-5, 9-5) before the two programs meet again:

All-time series

Clemson leads 7-4.

Last time they played

Largely due to its commanding offense, Clemson quickly built a double-digit lead that extended to 20 by halftime. The Orange hit just three first-half field goals, including two over the final 19 minutes after Buddy Boeheim connected on SU’s first possession.

In the second half, Joe Girard III found success driving against the Tigers and finished with a game-high 19 points. But Aamir Simms recorded a double-double (18 points, 11 rebounds) and Nick Honor hit five 3-pointers, propelling Clemson to rebound from four losses in six games after starting conference play near the top of the ACC’s standings.

KenPom odds

Syracuse has a 51% chance to win, with a projected score of 68-67

The Clemson report

Clemson hasn’t lost since it last played Syracuse on Feb. 6, including a 60-39 blowout of Wake Forest on Wednesday. Simms is the team’s only player averaging double-digits, but strong defensive play has meant the Tigers don’t need to score many points to still win games. They play at one of the slower tempos in the country, too, per KenPom.

Beat writers split if Syracuse can end season with win over Clemson (DO; Staff)

Syracuse closes its regular-season schedule with a home matchup Wednesday against Clemson (15-5, 9-5 Atlantic Coast), who defeated the Orange by 17 points at Littlejohn Coliseum in February. The Tigers went on a hot streak after beating the Orange, going undefeated since Jan. 30.

Behind Buddy Boeheim’s 26 points, Syracuse (14-8, 8-7) defeated North Carolina on Monday to bring its season closer to the bubble.

Here’s what The Daily Orange’s three beat writers think will happen in Syracuse’s regular season finale:

Andrew Crane (14-8)
Tiger king
Clemson 65, Syracuse 59

At this point, there are too many uncertainties regarding injuries that it’s difficult to pick the Orange heading into the game. Kadary Richmond’s limp off the court, as well as the ice bag strapped to his leg minutes later, didn’t look good at all. Syracuse doesn’t win this game without him.

Quincy Guerrier could be limited or out again too, stemming from his injury suffered against Georgia Tech. But either way, Clemson’s tight perimeter defense is strong enough to keep the Orange’s shooters contained, and without Bourama Sidibe, look for Aamir Simms to consistently find success within the paint — complementing the 3-pointers from Nick Honor.

Anthony Dabbundo (17-5)
Clawing back
Syracuse 68, Clemson 64

There are about a dozen takeaways from the Orange’s win against North Carolina. On one hand, Syracuse needed a terrible shooting night from the Tar Heels to pull off the upset. Then, they had almost nothing from Alan Griffin and still managed the win. The emergence of Jesse Edwards, the increased playing time for Richmond and the motivational mismatch tip this toss-up game toward the Orange.

Clemson is still one of the seven luckiest teams in the country, and if it’s close late, SU has a significant free-throw edge. The Tigers might come to the Dome and blow out Syracuse and make me look dumb, but the Orange are 12-1 at home for a reason and Clemson is safely in the NCAA Tournament by now. They don’t need this game like the Orange do.

Syracuse gets revenge for its blowout loss to Clemson last month and claws its way firmly onto the bubble with a win against the Tigers on Wednesday evening.

Syracuse could inch closer to NCAA Tournament bubble in regular-season finale vs. Clemson (10 things) (247sports.com; Shults)

After defeating North Carolina 72-70 on Monday night, Syracuse basketball has a quick turnaround for its game against Clemson on Wednesday. The Orange (14-8, 8-7 Atlantic Coast Conference) and the Tigers (15-5, 9-5) will tip off at 5 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.

The regular-season finale presents a final opportunity for Syracuse to improve its NCAA Tournament resume before the ACC Tournament. And SU doesn't have much margin for error if it wants to get back on the bubble.

"We know we have work to do," junior guard Buddy Boeheim said after defeating the Tar Heels. "We know we let a couple of games go that we needed to win, and we know that. But we're just taking it one game at a time. Coming into this, we were just like, 'Why not? Let's just go play. Nothing matters. Win or lose, we're just going to go play and see what we can do.' That's just kind of the mindset right now.’”

Syracuse will carry that mindset into its final game in the Dome of the season. The Orange is currently ranked 55th in NET rankings with a 3-1 record against Quad 2 opponents. For now, SU's road win against NC State has been bumped up to a Quad 1 victory, but the Wolfpack still has games against Notre Dame and Virginia Tech remaining on the schedule.

"(Clemson) really got us good at their place so we're not overlooking anything," Buddy Boeheim said. "We're focused on that game. (We'll) see what happens there -- just do everything we can and not overthink anything. And then go to Greensboro and hopefully we have some momentum going and we'll see what we can do."

Here are nine other things to watch as the Orange looks to bolster its at-large hopes against the Tigers.

Marek Dolezaj Discusses Senior Night, Future as an Orange & More (SI; Shoemaker)

Tuesday afternoon Syracuse C Marek Dolezaj addressed the media following the Orange’s 72-70 victory over North Carolina. He was supposed to be accompanied by fellow Senior Bourama Sidibe, but a last-minute meeting kept him out. This season Dolezaj has played all 22 games, averaging 10.7 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.2 assists in 34.9 minutes of action per game.

Tomorrow the Orange face off against the Clemson Tigers in what is not only an important game for the Orange due to the bubble implications, but also because it is Senior Night. What has been a unique season due to the coronavirus pandemic, Dolezaj as a Senior is eligible to return for another season if he wants to pursue it.

“I’m not thinking right now about it. I’m just thinking about the next game with Clemson and the next ACC tournament. After the season I will talk with my coaches and family and decide afterwards. I’m approaching tomorrow as my Senior Night and we will see what happens after that,” said Dolezaj.

Tigers could land top 3 seed in ACC Tournament (theclemsoninsider.com; Vandervort)

March Madness is going to be even more maddening than normal. It is already starting.

Due to Virginia Tech canceling Wednesday’s home game against Louisville because of contact tracing within the program, the Tigers can earn as high as the No. 3 seed in next week’s ACC Tournament should it beat Syracuse Wednesday night and Pittsburgh at home on Saturday.

Virginia Tech is currently the No. 3 team in the standings, but if it cannot play in next week’s ACC Tournament Louisville could be No. 3 and Clemson could be No. 4.

Clemson (15-5) is currently 9-5 in the ACC standings and is sitting in fifth place, while Virginia Tech is in third at 9-4 and Louisville is 8-4 and in fourth. The ACC has already announced the tournament seeding will be based on win percentage.

Clemson wraps ACC road slate at Syracuse (tigernet.com; Staff)

Clemson (15-5, 9-5 ACC) wraps its ACC road slate Wednesday at Syracuse (14-8, 8-7) in a makeup matchup for an earlier postponed game.

Tipoff in the Carrier Dome is set for 5:01 p.m. ET. Wes Durham and Chris Spatola will call the broadcast for ACCN. Don Munson and Tim Bourret will broadcast the game on the Clemson Tigers Network.

Tigers guard Al-Amir Dawes turned in a season-high 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting in a 66-58 win over Miami Saturday. Dawes was perfect from three-point range (4-for-4).

Syracuse topped UNC 72-70 on Monday in the Carrier Dome and are 12-1 at home this season. The Orange rank 59th on KenPom with the 32nd-best offense and 94th-best defense, while Clemson is 38th overall a top-15 defense (11) and offense rated just into the triple-digits (108).

• Clemson leads the all-time series with Syracuse 7-4, including winning the last three matchups in the series.

• The Tigers took the first meeting of the season on Feb. 6, by a 78-61 final score. The 17-point margin of victory is the largest for either team in series history.

• The lone contest between the Tigers and Orange in the 2019-20 season came down to the final seconds. Khavon Moore grabbed a live ball rebound and pushed the ball up court, crossing over near the free throw line and finding a back-cutting Clyde Trapp who scored the game-winning basket in a 71-70 win. Trapp scored a career-high 17 points and grabbed a then-career-high nine rebounds.

Syracuse hosts Clemson in key ACC clash (mdjonline.com; FLM)

Two of the hottest teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference will play Wednesday evening when Syracuse hosts Clemson in a key late-season showdown that has plenty of postseason repercussions.
Clemson has won five straight games to improve to 15-5 overall and 9-5 in league play; Syracuse has won four of six games since suffering a 17-point loss at Clemson on Feb. 6 and is 14-8, 8-7.
The Orange, who will celebrate Senior Night on Wednesday, are 12-1 at the Carrier Dome this season, including a 72-70 victory against North Carolina on Monday.

Syracuse obviously has purged the memory of its earlier loss to Clemson. The Orange made only three baskets in the first half of that loss.

"It was the worst offensive first half that I can ever remember us having," Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said. "We have to be better on the offensive end."
Syracuse has done just that of late, including against the Tar Heels on Monday night. Buddy Boeheim scored 26 points and made six 3-point shots in the victory, totaling 20 points or more for the third time in four games.
Boeheim scored just eight points on 3-of-13 shooting from the field in the loss to Clemson on Feb. 6.
Jesse Edwards also has contributed more of late, with six points and eight rebounds in a career-high 24 minutes against the Tar Heels on Monday night.

Syracuse Orange v. Clemson Tigers Prediction & Preview (3/3/21) - The Juice Online (the juice; Sen)

In their previous matchup on Feb. 6, Clemson routed Syracuse, 78-61, with Aamir Simms leading the Tigers with 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Including that win over SU, Clemson has won five straight and are the third highest ACC team in the NCAA NET Rankings at 33. The Orange, on the other hand, are squarely on the NCAA bubble and ranked No. 55.

With only 1 Quadrant 1 win, the Orange will need this Q2 win against Clemson to separate themselves from other bubble teams. As of today, here is the Quadrant breakdown for Syracuse:

  • Q1: 1-6
  • Q2: 3-1
  • Q3: 7-1
  • Q4: 11-0.
While the Orange has no “bad losses,” the team also has no “great wins” either. The sole Quadrant 1 win is an away win at NC State on Feb. 9, and with a NET ranking of 75 for NC State, the Q1 win is tenuous and could easily morph back into a Q2 win by Selection Sunday.

The same goes for SU’s other win over the Wolfpack at home on Jan. 31, which for the moment counts as a Quad 2 win. If NC State were to fall even one spot in the NET rankings, it would result in zero Quad 1 wins and only two Quad 2 wins for the Orange.

Put simply: Syracuse fans should be rooting for NC State from here on out.

Syracuse-Clemson basketball odds: SU a slight favorite (see point spread) (PS; $; Herbert)

The Syracuse men’s basketball team is a slight favorite over Clemson tonight as SU hopes to keep its NCAA Tournament chances alive.

The Orange (14-8 overall, 8-7 in ACC) are favored by a 2.5-point spread over the Tigers (15-5, 9-5) for Wednesday night’s game at the Carrier Dome. The consensus over/under is 135.5 points as of Wednesday morning, according to Vegas Insider and Covers.com.

Syracuse is coming off a 72-70 win over North Carolina on Monday, potentially putting the Orange back in the March Madness bubble. SU will host Clemson as a makeup for a game that was originally scheduled for Jan. 12, but delayed due to Covid-19.

Clemson, led by 6-9 senior Aamir Simms (13.6 points and 6.2 rebounds per game), dispatched the Orange, 78-61, at Clemson last month. But Syracuse is 12-1 on its home court this season and will be motivated to get revenge — and boost its resume.

NY’s amazing big wedding rules: Covid tests for everyone, dancing only in your pod (PS; $; Breidenbach)

In less than two weeks, couples in New York state will be able to host 150 of their friends and family members at the biggest weddings allowed since the coronavirus shut everything down a year ago.

Wedding venues are reading and rereading the state health department’s new guidance to try to figure out how it’s going to work. It’s not simple.

For starters, every single guest will have to have a negative Covid test in the hours leading up to the wedding. They’ll have to get an appointment and get the results back in just the right amount of time before the reception - 72 hours for PCR test or six hours for a rapid test.

Are there enough tests available and who pays? Can a guest from Massachusetts get a test in NY? Who is responsible for keeping track of all of it?

“The truth of the matter is, we truly don’t understand the guidelines yet,” said Rob Benetti, the general manager of the Doubletree by Hilton at Carrier Circle. “I don’t really know who does because they’re really restrictive.”

Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon said he too has not had time to read the guidance. He has said that weddings could send the number of tests the county administers through the roof.

One option, he said, is for the state to set up rapid testing sites. McMahon said he has suggested some sites to the state. Testing people at taxpayer expense could be seen as an investment in economic development and Gov. Andrew Cuomo has said it is key to reopening sports, music and the arts.

The state has the capacity now to test 350,000 people each day and can easily go beyond that, according to the state health department.

Anselem was one of four players who tested positive during SU’s late-December pause, Smith said. He lost eight to nine pounds from his already slim 210-pound build while he was sick. And he returned even later than everyone else because initial heart test results were inconclusive, though he was later cleared, Smith said. A setback like that is the worst thing to happen for someone of Anselem’s experience level. At Prolific Prep, the main focus was body placement and learning how to best use his size. He needs practice to continue maturing.

The great mystery has been solved. Kudos to the DO writers, who are doing a fine job covering the basketball teams.

Yep. I definitely find their coverage more useful than the PS's these days - not a knock against Mike/Donna, more just what their employer is "looking for" in terms of coverage and published stories
