'JUST ANOTHER ACC SCHOOL': Inside SU’s recruiting successes and its recent failures (DO; Dabbundo)

When it came time for five-star Rochester recruit Isaiah Stewart to make his college decision in fall 2018, he released a list of five final schools: Duke, Michigan State, Kentucky, Washington and Syracuse.

Then-longtime Syracuse assistant coach Mike Hopkins had made dozens of visits to McQuaid Jesuit High School when Stewart was an underclassman — so many that some joked Hopkins had his own parking spot at the school. At the time, Syracuse had recruited him early. He was fourth in 247Sports’ recruiting ranking for the entire 2019 class.

In 2017, Hopkins left Syracuse for the Washington head coaching job. Stewart’s list was still officially five, but really, it was four, one scout said. The Orange were just a courtesy addition now. He eventually chose Washington, and the five-star recruit and one-and-done prospect went from Syracuse’s backyard to the Pacific Northwest to a productive rookie season for the Detroit Pistons in the NBA this year.

“Hop was proven on the recruiting trail. He did a phenomenal job at Syracuse getting guys in that other programs didn’t necessarily like,” said one former staffer, who’s among people The Daily Orange granted anonymity to speak freely about SU’s recruiting.

When Hopkins, the man viewed as the heir to Jim Boeheim’s historic success, departed, so did years of established recruiting connections in Philadelphia, New Jersey and other major recruiting hubs. Many in and around Syracuse basketball’s program told The D.O. that recruiting has taken a dip in the last five years partially because of Hopkins’ departure. Sanctions on the program, early departures from players turning pro and the potential of a new coach all played a role as well.

“Syracuse offers used to be a big deal, but they’re not anymore. It’s just another ACC school,” one scout said.

But even with recruiting struggles, Syracuse has made three Sweet 16 appearances in five years, as many as any program in the nation but Gonzaga. The Orange have made NCAA Tournament success as a double-digit seed following average regular seasons the norm. SU’s average KenPom ranking from 2009-14 was 10.7, but dipped to 42.5 from 2016-21. Tournament runs have helped the program, but they’ve also left SU replacing key contributors earlier than it thought it’d need to.

JJ Starling is a major priority for the Syracuse basketball program...

How will Syracuse recruit players like JJ Starling with older guards on the roster? (Mike’s Mailbox) (PS; $; Waters)

...
Q: I’m curious about how SU is going to be able to recruit JJ Starling or another point guard given the fact they already have three guards in the fold?

Ray H.

Mike:
One of the trickier parts of recruiting is convincing a high school recruit to come to your school despite the possibility of veteran players being on the roster.

Coaches, at least those who don’t have the luxury of bringing in a lineup of one-and-dones every year, want to bring in recruits behind returning players in order to create continuity and maintain an experienced roster.

An early look at the 2021-22 Syracuse basketball team - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

With the basketball offseason officially underway, here’s a quick look at the 2021-22 Syracuse basketball team:

WHO’S OUT: With the elimination of the one-year redshirt rule for transfers in college basketball, it was a frenzy of movement in the offseason, with players either entering the portal, jumping to the NBA Draft or not using their extra year of eligibility.

  • John Bol Ajak: Ajak appeared in just 10 games in his two years at Syracuse, and was a long shot to ever crack the Syracuse rotation.
  • Robert Braswell: Toward the end of the season, Braswell became a fixture in the Syracuse rotation, and played 15 or more minutes in his final five games. He averaged 9.2 points in two ACC and two NCAA Tournament games before going scoreless in his final outing against Houston.
  • Marek Dolezaj: Dolezaj will forever be a fan favorite for his hustle and high basketball IQ, and appeared in 131 games throughout his career. As a senior, he averaged 9.8 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. He chose not to use his extra year of eligibility and turned pro.
  • Alan Griffin: On Monday, ZagsBlog.com reported that Griffin would forgo his final two years of eligibility and enter the NBA Draft. In his sole season at Syracuse, he averaged 13.3 points and 5.8 rebounds, though he mysteriously disappeared during SU’s postseason run.
  • Woody Newton: After starting the season as SU’s first wing off the bench, Newton was virtually non-existent following the turn of the calendar, appearing in only five games in 2021. His entry into the portal coincided with Syracuse adding Cole Swider (more on him below).
  • Kadary Richmond: This one hurt. Syracuse’s talented freshman showed confidence and poise beyond his years, and in the eyes of many Orange fans, was SU’s best point guard. But Richmond would’ve faced an uphill battle to enter the starting lineup with Joe Girard III firmly established in that role, and ended up transferring to Seton Hall.
WHO’S LIKELY OUT: After a breakout sophomore campaign, Quincy Guerrier declared for the NBA Draft, though he didn’t sign with an agent, preserving his ability to return to Syracuse. He was named to the All-ACC Third Team after averaging 14.5 points and nine rebounds per game.

Is Jimmy Boeheim a Syracuse Transfer Fit or Just a Good Story? – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Amendolara)

These days the transfer portal speculation runs all day, every day. More than 1,000 college basketball players are looking for new homes, not to mention the potential domino effect of those decisions. Playing time, shots taken, points scored, and starting jobs are all on the line with every one of these transfer situations.

It has led to fan bases and media of major programs like Syracuse conjecturing about possible fits and puzzle pieces. It’s almost like fantasy basketball for college. Jimmy Boeheim is certainly an amazing potential story. He is the eldest of the Boeheim children, and has played his college ball at Cornell. He’s also the Big Red’s best player, and says a decision is coming soon.

The 6’8″ Boeheim averaged a team-high 16.7 points and 5.6 rebounds in 21 games in ’19-’20. But he put his name into the transfer portal back in November when the Ivy League canceled its season. His younger brother Buddy said Jimmy was upset by the decision. Immediately, everyone assumed the Boeheim family would convene on the Hill this offseason. A dad coaching his two sons at the place he made a Hall of Fame career? While it’s rare for Ivy League players to make an impact in the power conferences, this is more than a good story.

Yes, the narrative writes itself. But Jimmy actually fits well into the Syracuse puzzle. He was effective against high-major competition in the few chances he got in Ithaca, going for 17 points, six rebounds, three assists, a block and a steal at #20 Penn State as a junior. Against Syracuse, he had a game-high 25 points, two rebounds and two assists. The best team in the Ivy was Yale in ’20, and he notched 17 points, four rebounds and four assists.

Syracuse Basketball: Analysts tout Kamari Lands scoring, defensive agility (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball landed a massive commitment recently in picking up elite 2022 wing Kamari Lands, who is a junior at Prolific Prep in Napa Valley, Calif.

The 6-foot-8 Lands, rated five stars and No. 19 overall in his class according to ESPN, is described by national recruiting analysts as a versatile scorer and defender who is athletic, has a high motor and should thrive in the Orange’s 2-3 zone.

I’ve read reports on Lands, and interviews given by him, that suggest he is able to suit up at point guard, shooting guard and small forward. That kind of flexibility will provide head coach Jim Boeheim and his assistants with a tremendous asset when Lands arrives on the Hill down the road.

As I’ve already detailed of late, the commitment by Lands to the ‘Cuse can help fuel a stellar 2022 cycle for Syracuse basketball. Lands has said that he will recruit other top-flight prospects to Central New York, and Orange coaches continue to pursue a range of other four- and five-star players in this class.
