Great Lakes Awareness Day celebrates the Great Lakes and highlights the issues they face, and how the lakes can be preserved. Events for the day have involved organizations such as schools, aquariums, and museums. There is not much information available online about how the day is celebrated or how it came to be.
There are five Great Lakes: Superior, Huron, Michigan, Ontario, and Erie. Together they make up the largest body of freshwater on Earth and stretch 750 miles from east to west. They are located on the border of the United States and Canada and touch the states of Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, New York, and Pennsylvania. It is believed that at one time the Great Lakes were covered by a glacier—it receded towards Canada and left depressions filled with water.

Syracuse basketball, with roster changes, takes dive in early rankings (itlh; Adler)
Syracuse basketball finished the 2020-21 season at No. 25 in the final Coaches poll after a run to the Sweet 16, but whether the Orange begins the upcoming campaign as a ranked squad remains to be seen.
Given the new transfer measured implemented by the NCAA, in which college basketball players can transfer once with immediate eligibility, the sport has witnessed an explosion of free agency since the most recent stanza culminated.
Head coach Jim Boeheim had previously said that the ‘Cuse would experience a sizable shake-up of its roster in the off-season, and he was right.
As it currently stands, the Orange has 10 scholarship players. It had 13 on scholarship in 2020-21. The team has added three transfers, along with 2021 five-star forward Benny Williams.
Conversely, five guys have elected to transfer, and two are heading for the professional ranks. The latest development surrounds sophomore forward Quincy Guerrier, an All-ACC player who said on Twitter that he would enter into the transfer portal while continuing to test the NBA Draft waters.
Syracuse basketball will likely be a fringe top-25 team to begin the 2021-22 term.
The ‘Cuse picking up transfers Cole Swider from Villanova, Jimmy Boeheim from Cornell and Symir Torrence from Marquette is solid. In my opinion, Williams is a star in the making....

Syracuse Basketball: Here’s why Quincy Guerrier leaving is a big-time blow (itlh; Adler)
Since the 2020-21 campaign ended for Syracuse basketball, when the Orange lost in the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16 to Houston, I had a feeling that sophomore forward Quincy Guerrier would not return to the Hill.
However, I figured that his election to not come back would come as a result of Guerrier remaining in the 2021 NBA Draft. That still may hold true, but the recent news that Guerrier will continue to test the NBA Draft waters, but also enter into the NCAA’s transfer portal, did catch me by surprise.
Then again, I am not in Guerrier’s inner circle, nor do I know about his relationship with the rest of the ‘Cuse program. What I do believe is that his decision to depart Central New York is a huge hit for Syracuse basketball, at least in my humble opinion.
Guerrier, who revealed his plan via Twitter, was named to the All-ACC third team in the most recent term. Per ESPN statistics, he averaged 13.7 points and 8.4 rebounds per contest, while connecting on 49.3 percent from the field.

Syracuse Basketball: Big Ten competition grows for 4-star J.J. Starling (itlh; Adler)
Central New York native J.J. Starling, a 2022 four-star point guard, recently said that he is in consistent communication with the Syracuse basketball program, which is terrific to hear.
At the same time, competition for the elite guard continues to grow. The latest scholarship offer sent his way came from Big Ten Conference member Maryland, according to Starling’s bio on the 247Sports Web site.
That pushes the total number of offers to Starling to around 15 at this juncture, per a review of various recruiting services. And given how the 6-foot-3 Starling played for the La Lumiere School in La Porte, Ind., during his junior season, I expect many more high-major offers to arrive for him.
Maryland competes in the rugged Big Ten, which was a juggernaut in the 2020-21 stanza. In recent years, the Terrapins have collected multiple terms of at least 24 victories and gone to the NCAA Tournament a handful of times.
Additionally, throughout the team’s history, Maryland has recruited and developed a bunch of excellent guards and wings, some of whom went on to the professional ranks. Guys like Juan Dixon, Steve Blake and Steve Francis come to mind.

UK, Syracuse And Michigan State All See Critical Defections (DBR; King)
There were three major player movement decisions on Friday. They’re not transfers in two cases and possibly not the third, so it’s kind of hard to classify them.
In ACC news, Syracuse’s Quincy Guerrier intends to assess his NBA prospects but won’t go back to Syracuse in any case. That’s kind of weird because he was in line to be the main player on that team, other than perhaps Buddy Boeheim. Even so, there’s not a lot of overlap between those two. They actually complement each other pretty well.
Second, Emoni Bates has decommitted from Michigan State which is a huge loss.
Bates could go the G-League route, but he could conceivably make more money in college when NIL stuff is hammered out. It would be painful for Spartan fans but we could see him making a ton at Michigan.
And third, with a lot of rebuilding to do, Kentucky lost a very promising recruit when 5-star point guard Nolan Hickman Jr. bailed.

Residents and Manlius town officials want to know the names of the restaurants being proposed for Towne Center at Fayetteville, but the developer isn’t saying.
Cor Development Inc. officials provided some hints at a town meeting earlier this week when questioned by planners.
It’s not a Chick-fil-A, and it’s also not a local restaurant, said Catherine “Kate” Johson, chief executive officer of COR, at the meeting.
The two restaurants, to be built in a 7,240-square-foot building in what’s now a parking lot between McDonald’s and Key Bank, are chain eateries, COR officials said.
One will feature Mexican-themed food, similar to a Chipotle. The other will serve coffee, salads and sandwiches. One also might serve breakfast, she said.
